Marjane Satrapi’s Persepolis Reflection
Due to Marjane’s Satrapi’s unusual style of literature in the graphic novel Persepolis, I now have a more profound understanding about the Iranian culture, and now look at Iran with a different outlook. By portraying her childhood story in a black and white comic book style Satrapi, makes her novel easier to relate to. The reason she chose to make her autobiographical novel black and white is so that the person reading it would not judge the characters by their skin color or physic, but rather see them for what they really are, human. Forgeries often have a negative stereotypical perception about Iran but upon reading Persepolis ones opinion of Iran changes. In a sense by choosing to make the novel in black and white the graphic novel is overall more relatable to people of all ages and backgrounds. The reader can therefore better identify with the characters and ultimately develop sympathy towards Iran. In Persepolis Marjane Satrapi makes Iran’s historical background easier to understand while at the same time very interesting to read about. Since the author chooses to portray this autobiography’s setting and characters in a very universal manner, it is very simple for an average reader to relate themselves with the situations in the graphic novel. A concept in the novel I found very unique about the Iranian culture was that of the Dowry. I learned that the dowry is basically when a man gives his future wife a gift such as capital, land or any kind of goods that is meant to represent his respect for her. Satrapi emphasizes how these values are long gone and the idea of the dowry is now used for the raping and killing of innocent young women. This can be seen in the unjust and cruel death Niloufar suffers and the fear Marjane’s mother has toward her daughter’s safety and what can happen to her if she does not behave accordingly.     The exigence of this chapter is the fact that sex slavery has worsened and is worsening; the created capitalism, the developed transportation and the fear of AIDS make trafficking easier and increase demand for young girls because customers believe young girls would not infect with ADIS. The authors use mainly pathos and logos to describe sex slavery situation. First, they emotionally appeal to their audiences with Meena Hasina’s horrific experience; she was kidnapped and trafficked, and then she was forced to prostitute. If she resisted serving customers, she was beaten, threatened with death and even drugged by the owner of the brothel. As a result of prostitution, she gave births one girl and one boy; however, her babies are deprived by the owner of the brothel. Later, she could take her children back from the pimp by assistance of an organization that helps people suffer from sex slavery in India, but her daughter Naina has already drugged and forced to prostitute. Next, the authors also provide logic data to convince how serious sex slavery is in the world. For example, there are 2 or 3 million women prostitute in India and many of them are trafficked and forced to sell sex. Also, according to the authors’ estimation, there are 3 million women and girls are enslaved in the sex trade all over the world, and they could be killed by their owners because they are treated as one of the owner’s properties. In the early days of the Iranian revolution, a young woman named Azar Nafisi started teaching at the University of Tehran. However, in 1981, Nafisi was expelled from the University of Tehran for refusing to wear an Islamic veil. Seven years later, however, she did indeed resume teaching but soon resigned in protest over the increasingly cruel punishments of the Iranian government toward women. She dreamed of working with students that carried a great passion for learning. In Reading Lolita in Tehran, Azar Nafisi and her seven students join together every Thursday morning at her home and discuss classic texts of Western literature that have to do with prominent figures.
