Su salto a la fama llego con el famoso libro la casa de los espíritus en 1982 el cual fue inspirado por su familia. Por más de 25 años ha dado conferencias y seminarios acerca de los derechos femeninos y de la política latinoamericana. En 1992 en honor a su hija fallecida Paula creó la Fundación Isabel Allende para ayudar a mujeres y niños. Sus famosos libros La casa de los espíritus y De amor y de sombra han sido adaptados a la pantalla grande en los cines.
