I chose to use LinkedIn. The web address is http://www.linkedin.com. I selected this organization because I have seen it successfully used firsthand and was very impressed with the expansiveness of the website. The ability to network with past co-workers, present co-workers and even talk to people who could give a good word about you really impressed me. A lot of the time, word of mouth about you makes a big difference. I was also given assurance I chose the right platform at a dinner recently, when a lady told me she used LinkedIn to find new employees. Creating a professional online appearance lets employers know you are there and you are serious about getting your degree and wanting to get the word out there that you want to work for them. I think it’s an important to get your face out there, so to speak. With LinkedIn, you’re able to not only actually and literally get your face out there, you can network with people who are interested in what you are.

The web-based application LinkedIn, founded and developed in 2002 by Reid Hoffman (formerly a board member of the company PayPal), is essentially a social networking tool for businesses and individual use that promotes professional networking. Once a user creates a profile, sort of like they would on Facebook, filing out any information they would like to share, they are now able to search and connect with other users whom they might know personally or have had a professional relationship with. Doing so grows those users “connections” which sort of follows a “six degrees of separation” logic: essentially that everybody is somehow connected through 6 people at most. This then creates a network of professionals and in turn promotes business and career opportunities. Users are able to view other users work/employment history, resumes, websites, etc. Fortune 500 companies have created company profiles on LinkedIn for promotion, advertising and even acquisitioning new talent for their company. The company…

I recently started looking for a new job and discovered a Bachelor’s degree is a requirement for the majority of the positions I wanted to apply for. The more resumes I sent out with no response, the more I knew I had to take action. I knew going to a traditional school was going to be too difficult with my hectic schedule. I started to research colleges that catered to adult learners and found University of Phoenix. I spoke with a counselor at University of Phoenix who answered my questions on the amount of time school takes and how I would pay the tuition. I looked at going to a campus versus online and ultimately decided online would afford me the most flexibility.…

In today's society, I see many working adults pursuing their degrees to obtain security and self-fulfillment. Returning to school offers me many personal benefits. In today’s fast moving and competitive workforce, most jobs require some sort of a degree. I have bounced from one job to the next and always felt there was something missing. I would love to be satisfied in my career and enjoy getting up and going to work. Job satisfaction is a direct link to healthy self-concept and self-esteem. According to Witt & Mossler, Holland’s personality theory states “those who have a social personality will have job satisfaction as a social worker” (p. 4 chapter 2). In order for me to have a profession that I enjoy and have a substantial amount of income I need to obtain my degree, and there are so many other rewarding benefits a degree offers.…

In 2003 there were 1.98 million people enrolled in online courses and in 2004 the number jumped up to 2.35 million people enrolled (Reuter and Schwartzberg 242). There are 178 accredited online colleges and universities in the United States (Accredited par.1). The next question would be are employers all right with people getting their degree through the internet or do they still prefer the traditional type of degree? The concept of getting a degree online is still very new and with more students going through online courses everyday and getting into the workforce there may be a day where getting a traditional degree and getting on online degree will be looked at the same way. Online degrees can be just as good as a typical traditional college degree.…
