Torn between two worlds

Date: 1950
Maria Hertogh has gone down in popular imagination as the girl whose custody case sparked one of Singapore's worst riots. But her tale is not all about the politics of intercommunal relations in a multiracial city. At the centre was an innocent child torn between two mothers. This selection of news reports recaptures that gripping domestic drama, played out against the backdrop of that eternal conflict between East and West.
May 20

THE SINGAPORE CHIEF JUSTICE, Mr Justice MurrayAynsley, yesterday ordered that a 13yearold Dutch girl who has lived for eight years with a Malay woman in Java and Malaya should be given into the care of the Netherlands ConsulGeneral who, it is understood, will return her to her parents in Holland.
After the decision, the girl, Maria Huberdina Hertogh, and Aminah, the
Malay woman, clung to each other for almost an hour outside the Supreme
Court. They declined to enter a waiting car, sobbed and vowed they would not be parted.
With tears streaming down her face, Maria shouted in Malay (the only language she can speak): "Aminah is my mother. She has loved me, cared for me and brought me up."
Then looking at Aminah, the girl said, "Do you love me, mother? If you love me don't leave me. I don't want to go with this man (a Dutch consular official)." July 29

THE FULL COURT of Appeal in Singapore yesterday decided that Maria
Hertogh shall be given back to her fostermother, Che Aminah.
The Appeal Court yesterday held that the proceedings before the Chief
Justice were, by reason of the nonservice of the necessary parties, a nullity. When she heard that Maria would be returned to her, Aminah broke down and wept openly. But they were tears of joy. Hugging and kissing Maria, she said brokenly: "I have never been so happy in my life."
Stumbling a little as she came out of the Court of Appeal, she shook hands almost convulsively, with friends and wellwishers

Hammurabi’s Code and Ben Zhao’s Instruction manual for Women, both establish similar gender norms about the female sex. One example of a gender norm established by the two is the emphasis of a women’s protection of her purity before marriage. For example Hammurabi’s code states “Again, there must be no marriage with a prostitute, since by reason of the abuse of her body. God could not accept her nuptial sacrifices.”(pg. 16). The code says that a women’s virginity is sacred and a gift given to God and her husband at marriage, it is her virtue and without it she has nothing of value. There is also a similar opinion given in Ben Zhao’s instructions that says “To guard carefully her chastity; to control circumspectly her behavior; in every motion to exhibit modesty; and to model each act on the best usage, this is womanly virtue” (Ben Zhao). He is essentially saying the same thing, a women’s chastity is what makes her respectable and gives her validity. However, while Both Hammurabi’s Code and Ben Zhao’s manual share similar gender norms, they also establish gender norms that are the opposite of each other, such as the behavior and role of women in society. For example Ben Zhao says “Let a woman modestly yield to others; 1et her respect others; let her put others first, herself last. Should she do something good, let her not mention it; should she do something bad let her not deny it. Let her bear disgrace; let her even endure when others speak or do evil to her.”(Ben Zhao). Ben Zhao believes that a women’s role is to please others, never themselves, to do good and receive nothing, but be punished and humiliated for wrong doing. However King Hammurabi thinks the opposite “If a women quarrel with her husband… the reasons for her prejudice must be presented. If she is guiltless… but he leaves and neglects her, then no guilt is attached to this women; she shall take her dowry and return to her father’s house” (pg.…

The American Revolution was a war between the thirteen colonies of America and the British that took place from 1775 to 1783. The colonies, which had not yet been unified, wanted freedom from the domineering British and their "taxation without representation". This saying, coined up twenty years prior to the beginning of the war, was a major slogan for the revolutionaries. The quote means, "If citizens are not represented in the government, then the government should not have the authority to tax them" . In the French and Indian War that lasted from 1754 to 1763, the British, ultimately victorious, fought the French over the control of territories in America that both sides claimed they owned. The war was very expensive for both sides, and the British decided to make up the money by taxing their colonies in America. Debating the validity of England's legal power to tax them like this, the colonies grew resentful of their mother country. Multiple taxes came about, and the most crippling one to the colonists was the tax on tea, which was "an entering wedge in the great dispute that was finally to wrest the American colonies from England" . The infamous Boston Tea Party in 1773 would result from the tax on tea, and the continuous conflicts escalated to a war about a year and a half later. Saving the contents of the war for the rest of the paper, the colonists, against all odds, managed to defeat the British and maintain their independence they established during the war. The answer to "How were the Americans able to fight their way to victory?" is still debated over today. Many historians claim that the group of colonists was just the mouse in between the two elephants, the French and the British, fighting and that the elephant on the mouse's side, the French, was victorious. However, this is untrue because the Americans did in fact play a major role in the gaining of American independence in the mid…
