Cahokia- had pop of 15000-20000; largest city of the Mississippian people. Year 1150 (900-1350). Had mounds that were 100ft high and used for rituals.
King Alfonso- Historical significance: Gives a glimpse on how the Europeans colonized Africa, spread religion, and a look at the slave trade- between Portugal and Congo brought Christianity into the Congo and also brought slavery into the Atlantic world and European settlement.
Hernando Cortes-(1485-1547) Spanish conquest- conquered the Aztec empire and destroyed its civilization. 1519 led expedition inland. It began as a journey for gold and ended in a journey of power. He used many in his quest to overtake the Aztecs. His slave/mistress and other Indians who hated the Aztecs. Along with advanced weapons and indian allies disease was also his silent partner in taking out the Aztecs. Helped spain become the master of the wealthiest regions in the western hemisphere.
Batholeme de las Casas- protector of the Indians ( in the west indies ) from the atrocities the Spanish colonists inflicted upon them. In 1542 laws were adopted among the colonies that protected the Indians. However, to help protect the Indians from slavery De las casas proposed that Africans be used.
Protestant Reformation- during 1517. Martin luther saxxony 1517. Directly responsible for the initiative for the protestant reformantion. The different sects starting in various regions of Europe saw rise calvinkin, angelican, and hugernaut churches. Luther started a movement that allowed people to directly read the bible in their vernacular. Other significance would be the religious overthrow of monarchies and revolution. Direct effect on europe and new world because of the fighting caused various religious sects to flee to the Americas. Protesting against catholic church practices.
Colony of Roanoke- Started In 1585, Roanoke became a “test case” for colonization. Raleigh sent 107 men to colonize on the Roanoke island and left with the promise to return with more supplies following year. The colony had trouble with the Croatans and were attacked, but repelled. In the following year the colonist were able to return to England and introduced tobacco, maize, and potatoes. In 1587 Raleigh dispatched more colonist to Roanoke with his friend John White. In late 1587 White left for England and because of the Spanish War was not able to return until 1590. When he did everyone had vanished expect for a skeleton. For this reason they Colony of Roanoke became known as the lost colony. The significance of this experiment was that it showed what could happen to colonies not yet well established. Roanoke was a parasitic colony that thought they could trade with the Indians and get help while trying to take the land.
John Smith- an Englishman that set out on an expedition to begin Jamestown colony in 1607 on the James River. He also set out to find gold, silver a northwest passage and become allies with the Native Americans. On this expedition Powhatan had Opechancanough capture John Smith in 1607. The reason Powhatan had J.S captured so that the Chesapeake Indians could show the dominance over the Jamestown colonists and so that they could become trade allies.
Powhatan- Powhatan was a chief among the Chesapeake Indians between the James and Potomac rivers. He devised for his brother Oprchancanough to capture the English explorer/colonist and then have him “saved” by his daughter Pocahantas. He did this so that he could establish the Jamestown colonists as allies and use them for trade. He was also the reason the settlers were able to survive, giving them corn and trading with them.
