Frankie and Johnny
The speaker of the poem “Frankie and Johnnie” is telling the story of two people that were in a relationship, where Johnnie was cheating on Frankie, and then Frankie kills Johnnie. The poem starts out telling the readert he backstory of Frankie and Johnnie. The speaker says that “Frankie and Johnnie were lovers...They swore to be true to each other/ As true as the sky above;” (ll.1,3-4)Then it goes on to say that Frankie bought Johnnie a lot of nice, expensive things and gave him a lot, if not all, of her money for presumably no particular reason. After that, Frankie goes away to Memphis for some reason and when she comes back, she learns that Johnnie has been cheating on her this whole time. “[Frankie] Gave her money to Johnnie, /he spent it on those parlour whores;” (ll. 23-24). Then Frankie goes down to a bar and asks the bartender if Johnnie had been there. The bartender says he had and he had been with a girl name Nellie Bly. “She said “Oh, Mr. Bar-tender, / has my loving Johnnie been here? / He is my man and he’s done me wrong.”/…But I saw Johnnie an hour ago/with a girl named Nellie Bly;” (ll.28-30, 33-34). Frankie then goes to the pawn shop and bought a gun. “Frankie went to the hock-shop, /Bought her a big forty-four” (ll.36-37). She finds Johnnie at a local brothel with Nellie Bly and goes upstairs and shoots him. “Frankie went down to the hook-shop,/ …there she saw her Johnnie / loving up Nellie Bly/...Roota-toot-toot, three times she shoot” (ll.41, 43-44, 63) Frankie then goes on to tell everyone to bring a hearse and she would bury Johnnie, and then to call the police and lock her up for murder. “Bring out your rubber-tyred hack, / I’ll take my man to the graveyard, / but I won’t bring him back; /… Bring round a hundred policemen, / bring ‘em round to-day, / and lock me in that jail-house” (ll.77-79, 86-88). But before the police come she goes and tries to apologize to Mrs. Halcome but she won’t accept it. Then Frankie goes to look at Johnnie in his

Firstly, there are several examples of Duffy implying a strong relationship of love and admiration between herself and her mother. For instance, this is conveyed when Duffy describes her mother’s polka dot dress as blowing around her legs, before referring to her as “Marilyn”. This immediately draws the audiences’s minds to the fifties, and the iconic image of the glamorous Marilyn Monroe with her polka dot dress blowing up. As well as helping the poem to get into the mood of this time period, comparing her mother to such a well-known and flamboyant figure shows the love and adoration that Duffy feels towards her mother, seeing her as someone who is just as beautiful as the famous film star, as well as a great role model. The same idea of admiration towards her mother is also demonstrated on several other occasions throughout the poem, for example in the phrase “in the ballroom, with the thousand eyes”. While this description could refer to the lights of a disco ball on the floor, it may also mean the many eyes of others, admiring Duffy’s perception of her mother: glamorous and attractive.…

Dictions and structure are the foundation of any literary work. To begin with, Wright uses the word "you" to address the person she is speaking to rather than more specific and definitive names. This word choice creates a mysterious atmosphere and raises the question: Who is this "you" person that the author is trying to reach out to? The diction that the writer uses leaves the character nameless. In addition, from lines 7-8, the quote "and I coupling on the landing en route to our detached day" is quite an oxymoron. From a word that symbolizes two things becoming one to a word that means the complete opposite, it is fairly contradicting. Moreover, the use of the adjective "black" in the last two lines of the poem raises another question for the reader. The colour black usually denotes authority and power, since black contains all colours of the spectrum, it should evoke string emotions. Yet, the poet herself doesn't seem like the type of person who dictates policy. Furthermore, Wright structures her poem according to it's importance. She first writes about things she says on her first encounter with the character, then talks about the numerous poems she writes, and then finally moves on to talking about her life. Each time the idea of feeling toward the subject is seemingly more tragic and more meaningful as the poem moves on. In fact, this poem would not have made much of an impression if the order of incidents was disordered.…

One similarity between the story of Johnny Bear and the novella of Of Mice and Men is the description of Johnny Bear and Lennie. An interesting description on p. 2 of Johnny Bear describes Johnny Bear as a “great, stupid, smiling bear”. This description is parallel to the one in Of Mice and Men. “Behind him walked his opposite, a huge man, shapeless of face, with large, pale eyes, with wide sloping shoulders; and he walked heavily, dragging his feet a little, the way a bear drags his paws.” (Steinbeck, p.2, Of Mice and Men) In both texts, Lennie and Johnny Bear paired with the animalistic nature of a bear. Besides both of them being compared to bears, both Lennie and Johnny Bear are portrayed as half wits or dimwits. “He stood in the doorway, swinging his arms jerkily the way half-wits do.” (Steinbeck, p.2, Johnny Bear) “The poor bastard’s nuts.” (Steinbeck, p.98, Of Mice and Men) In both texts, these characters are sentenced to aloneness because of their mental challenges.…

The poem "The Ex-Basketball Player" by John Updike dramatizes the conflict between dreams and reality in the case of Flick Webb. Flick shows such promise in his teenage years, but he ends up in the pathetic reality of helping out at a garage and playing pinball in a luncheonette. The poem begins with the description of "Pearl Avenue" which "bends with the trolley tracks, and stops, cut off / Before it has a chance to go two blocks..." Pearl Avenue presents a ticket name connoting a clean, freshness which describes the state of Flick in high school, his glory days. The fact that the street stops before it goes two blocks displays the harsh end of Flick's success. His prosperity ends with his adolescence; his seemingly assured future becomes a mere wistful memory. At the end of Pearl Avenue sits Berth's Garage which situates on a corner "facing west"; Flick helps Berth out there on most days. Facing west connotes the setting of the sun and the ending of a day. It is fitting that Pearl Avenue ends in darkness. Garages have grease and filth in abundance; this contrasts sharply with the shiny, cleanness of a pearl. The poet's use of diction in the first stanza stresses Flick's riches to rags journey.…

One wouldn’t think that the lives of Johnny Cash and Ray Charles have anything in common. However, after viewing the movies Walk the Line, starring Joaquin Phoenix as Johnny Cash and Reese Witherspoon as June Carter, and Ray, starring Jamie Foxx portraying Ray Charles, their similarities are as striking as their differences. Both of these films are biopics chronicling the rags to riches lives of two of the most influential musicians whose careers began in the 1950s. Walk the Line is a love story depicting the courtship intertwined with the careers of Johnny Cash and June Carter. Ray is a docudrama centered around the career of Ray Charles. Cash and Charles enjoyed illustrious music careers, despite personal tragedies, illicit drug use, and the changing social landscape of civil rights.…

In a different light, everything in this poem is much more innocent than what the modern reader may think is implied. In the first stanza, the whiskey breath is not directly connected to alchoholism. In fact, alcoholism was not a common word that was used in 1942. It was extremely common for a man to come home from a hard day of work and have a strong liquor drink to relax. It still is in some families and cultures today. Roethke adds in the poem that the mother's expression was not pleasent, which tells the reader that maybe dad had a little too much with dinner (I hate that look!). If he was doing something horribly wrong, theres no doubt that mom would be doing something more than scowling in the…

Love is like quicksand, the more you fight back, the stronger the love. On the other hand, the more you let go, and release, the less the feeling of love. For example, Romeo and Juliet fought for their right to love, which had then resulted in the immense amount of love for each other. Shinji and Romeo are very different; however, they can be similar as well. Even though they both come from very different time periods yet they are similar in an abundant amount of ways. The characters have a very distinguishing difference in their set of morals.…

She tells the reader how wonderful her life used to be and then advises them to avoid the choices she made.
