Phoneme: A phoneme is the smallest or minimal contrastive unit in the sound system of a language that serves to distinguish b/w meanings of words. It is pronounced in one or more ways depending on the no. of allophones & by convention phoneme is represented b/w slashes //.
Allophone : In linguistics , an audibly distinct variant of a phoneme is called allophone.
We can’t predict when a particular allophone with more or less aspiration is likely to occur , so the allophones are generally in free variation – free variation is a term in linguistics often defined as a phenomenon of 2 or more sounds or forms appearing in the same environment without a change in the meaning & without being considered incorrect by native speakers.

Important Notes :
1. The next higher unit than the speech sound (phoneme) , the syllable is made up of one or more than one speech sound.
2. The vowel element is essential to the structure of a syllable i.e., a syllable is not possible without the vowel element being an obligatory element and therefore this vowel element is called as nucleus.
3. The consonant occupies a marginal place and is – The consonant which begins a syllable is called the releasing consonant and that which occurs at the end of a syllable is called the arresting consonant.
4. In other words , a syllable is a sound or group of sounds having vowel as the nucleus,
