EDUCATIONAL PSYCHOLOGY
As a student of faculty of education, I have to know how students learn and what is the process of learning. In this article, I will mention about learning and some researches about learning.
Learning means permanent changes in our behavior or knowledge. If you learn something, you should imply into your life things that are learned, I mean is that learned things must be occurred by experience. However, while some psychologists argue that learning cannot be observed directly, others believe that results of learned things reflect the person’s behavior. According to psychologists who argue that learning is observable found a theory called Behavioural Learning Theories which are include classical conditioning, contiguity, and operant contiguity.
Aristotle, as we know, defined the learning as contiguous. Contiguous means that two or more sensations appear together. Ivan Pavlov made a famous experience while using a dog about contiguity called classical conditioning. In this experience, firstly, a bell rings; Pavlov’s dog does not react. Then, when the meat is given to the dog, at the same time the bell rings. After a while, Pavlov’s dog react when hear the sound of the bell even meat is not given. As far as I can see that the result of this experience can be thought as the same in the education. For example, when students hear the sound of the bell in the school, they know that the teacher come to the classroom and the lesson will start. We can encounter the examples of this experience in every part of our life. Classical conditioning based on involuntary behaviour. On the other hand, there is another founding based on voluntary behaviors called operant conditioning. In this experience, subjects’ react is voluntary.     The process of learning focuses on what occurs when learning takes place some explanations of what occurs are considered to be learning theories, these try to describe how people and animals learn, which in return allow us to understand the process of learning.     With child abuse cases on the rise, children are being used as evidence in the courtroom; this involves them giving accurate eye witness testimony. Parker and Carranza conducted a laboratory study in 1989 to study the accuracy of age in eye witness testimony. They showed a mock crime scene video to a sample of primary school children and a sample of college students. They found that the primary school children were more likely to ‘just pick’ a criminal from a line up compared to college students who were hesitant about choosing anyone but they were more likely to identify the correct person; concluding that adults were more likely to give accurate eye witness testimonies. On the other hand though Ceci and Bruck completed a study that concluded children may have more accurate eye witness testimonies as they have no prejudices or schemas. They don’t stereotype people and are more likely to tell you it ‘how it is’. The lack of a schema in children means that they can sometimes be more useful than adult eye witness testimonies as they have no preconceptions of the crime/incident. Goodman and Schaff showed that the language used when asking a child a question may affect a child’s recall because of their level of understanding and word development. Overall it has to be said that children give a less detailed EWT but this doesn’t mean that it is any less accurate. Young children are more prone to leading questions and are more likely to change their answer if a question is repeatedly asked because they feel they need to impress someone and the judge is ‘correct’ on comparison to them.…
