E-commerce has quickly grown into a giant shopping force, with eBay and Amazon.com leading the way; both websites offer similar services in different manners. eBay focuses on being an online auction site where people are able to bid on the items they want, attempting to find the best deal, while Amazon.com is store-based, where items are sold at set prices. This study aims to compare the ease of completing four tasks both websites offer, registering an account, buying, selling, and reviewing an item, against each other to determine which e-shopping leader is the easiest to use and which website consumers prefer. Each task was timed, and user feedback was gathered after completion of each task. These tasks were ranked on easiness to complete, satisfaction with the way that the site laid that task out, and confidence that the task was completed successfully; any issues that the users faced, whether self-reported or observed by the moderator, were also recorded. Whether or not the task was completed successfully was also recorded, and the number of clicks required in relation to minimum clicks needed to complete each task was recorded as an indicator of errors. Methodology
The final t-test conducted was based on participants’ overall site satisfaction. While the test indicted no significant difference in the ratings between eBay (M = 4.17, SD = 0.76) and Amazon.com (M – 4.00, SD – 0.78), even though users stated they found eBay (N = 14) easier than Amazon.com (N = 8) to perform tasks only barely did users prefer eBay (N = 11) over Amazon.com (N = 10). The close ranking wasn’t attributed to the tasks performed but, rather, as was echoed by multiple participants, the overall reliability of the sellers on Amazon.com compared to eBay, leading the users to feel as they were in a safer environment while on Amazon.com.
