Childbirth Education Paper

The 2 hour class was very informative. The instructor initially had all the couples introduce themselves, how far along they were (in terms of their pregnancy), when their due date was, as well as who their physician was. After the ‘mini’ introductions, the instructor explained the child birthing process. She briefly touched base on these topics: what types of delivery one can have, either a c-section or a vaginal delivery, breastfeeding as opposed to giving formula, and irregular versus regular contractions. She also explained that everything the mother puts into her body, the baby receives as well. There after, she showed a 20 minute video on the latter half of the class about 2 women giving birth. One was giving birth ‘naturally’ at home. Naturally meaning no anesthesia and the other was giving birth in a hospital setting with anesthesia. From there, the instructor ended the class with having all the mothers lay on the floor along with their partners to do some breathing exercises. She explained to the class that proper breathing will ensure a much easier and smoother labor. Overall, the class was quite informative. I learned a lot regarding the child birthing process as well as the different interactions each pregnant couple showed. I am truly glad to have attended such a class.

The one topic the instructor touched based on that intrigued me was the Kegel Exercise. I didn’t know that women and men should do this exercise and that it is beneficial to do it. I learned that a Kegel exercise consists of contracting and relaxing the muscles of the pelvic region and that men and women should do this 3-5 times a day because it strengthens their pelvic muscles. It is highly recommended for pregnant women to practice such exercise for it prepares them for the extreme pain/stress they’re going to endure in the later stages of their pregnancy as well as for their vaginal delivery. I learned that this exercise is also

If the children are not being taught at home, it is now added into the curriculum in school. This education is free in the public school system and each student has access as long as they attend class. This education teaches ways to prevent pregnancies so as nurses, this will decrease the number of unintended pregnancies, also decreasing the number of abortions and adoptions seen. Another concept taught is how to prevent infections, which should lead to patients being more knowledgeable about the consequences of unprotected sex. Now that patients are informed, nurses will be able to communicate more effectively in preventing and treating sexually transmitted infections.…

Internal fetal monitoring is accomplished with a fetal scalp electrode that is a direct electrocardiogram of the FHR and therefore produces the most accurate FHR tracing having an advantage over the external monitoring. The FSE is attached to the fetus during a vaginal exam and then connected to a fetal monitor. Because the risk of transmission to the fetus is increased by the small puncture in the fetal scalp, use of internal scalp electrodes should be avoided if at all possible in the presence of known maternal infections such as HIV, hepatitis or GBS. Fetal scalp monitors are also avoided in preterm infants because of the increased risk of ventricular hemorrhage.…

Prior to taking this course I unknowingly forgot some areas of my sexuality involving myself and my husband. When became married I took for granted our sexual relationship and forgot to nurture it along with our relationship. However, I was reminded that even being in a good relationship changes as-well-as our needs in that relationship. Developing and growing as a couple can avoid problems that can occur over years of neglect. Realizing, through reading the text information, taking care of our sexual needs instead of turning away from them brought both my husband and I closer together and improved our sexual…

I took Lamaze and Child birthing classes when I was pregnant with my first child in April of 2006. Throughout the process and especially now that I’ve already had my second child I can see the pros and cons of taking Lamaze classes. Since I am an optimistic person, I will start with the pros. After completing the classes I feel like I was extremely more informed about the labor process itself and the stages of labor and delivery. I was actually able to see and feel myself going through those stages during my labor and that was very beneficial to me at the time because I was actually able to mentally put myself on a timeline and knew what stage I was in and how many more I had to go. It’s always easier for me personally to get through something tough or painful if I can see the finish line or at least be able to start a count down and say, “Okay, one down, two to go.” If I hadn’t had the Lamaze class then I would have had no idea what was happening or what to expect to happen next.…

False labor is characterized by contractions that are irregular and weak, often slowing down with walking or a position change. True labor contractions begin in the back and radiate around toward the front of the abdomen. They are regular and become stronger over time; the woman may find it extremely difficult if not impossible to have a conversation during a contraction.…

As expected my knowledge did grow. The first thing we really looked into in the class was the qualifications of being a childcare provider. The next thing we learned in the class was child brain and physical development. We covered how brain and physical development is one of the most important factors in child development because it affects the child for the rest of life. Damage to certain parts of the brain can dramatically affect a child for the rest of life. Attention is one of the most important factors in a child’s brain development because attention changes how the brain responds to actions around the child. If a child is born with or develops eye problems, it is recommended to have those corrected because they can affect learning and attention abilities in young children (Benson). Parents can help encourage a child’s physical development by allowing them room to explore by providing push-pull toys and reading or singing to them, allowing them to join along (Longo). As the class went on we started learning about safety in childcare centers. Most of the rules and guidelines seemed like common sense. For example, teachers and volunteers must be free from illness, smoking is not allowed on the premises, and open windows must have a screen (Department of Children and Families). After the class I learned how to overcome anxiety by practicing what I needed to practice and by believing in myself with the knowledge that I had…
