Observations
Materials: * Barium Iodide- White and powdery * Zinc Sulfate- White and powdery * Boiling Chips- Tiny, grey and rock like
Experimental Observations:
Barium Iodide used- .63g
Zinc Sulfate used- .45g
Boling Tube with 2 boiling chips- 41.52g
Barium Iodide in solution with 2 mL of deionized water looks cloudy. Zinc Sulfate in solution with 2 mL of deionized water is clear. Barium Iodide solution mixed with Zinc Sulfate solution turns milky white. After first centrifugation, solution separates into Barium Sulfate precipitate and Zinc Iodide supernatant. Supernatant is decanted into boiling tube. After second centrifugation we are left with more precipitate and a little more supernatant. Supernatant is poured off again and precipitate is washed again with another 1 mL of deionized water. After third centrifugation very little supernatant is left. We add the supernatant to the boiling tube. The Barium Sulfate waste product is disposed of properly in the waste beaker. We heat our boiling tube in the Bunsen burner and we are left with a small amount of white powdery Zinc Iodide. Mass of test tube with zinc iodide- 42g.
We made a total of .48g of zinc iodide.

The final temperature was 76. The time duration for the bromination was 3:30 pm to 4:28 pm, which was 58 minutes. The flask was set out to cool. No changes occurred while it cooled. The next task was to precipitate the brominated hydrocinnamic acid from the solution. Even though BHCA has a polar carboxyl group, it has only a slight polarity due to its 9 carbon atoms. To precipitate it out, the solution was mixed added to 100 mL of ice water in a 250 mL flask. This flask was in an ice bath because low temperatures reduce solubility. The solution was added to a flask with a plastic pipette. The mixture was stirred at high speed. The mixture turned cloudy and white. The temperature was 3. The mixture was then poured through a Buchner funnel using vacuum filtration. The water and succinimide (the other product formed) collected in the flask below the funnel. This was the filtrate. BCHA stayed on top of the filter paper in the funnel. This was the precipitate. It was observed as a white powder. A beaker was pre-weighed at 14.40 g. The beaker was labeled and then the precipitate was added. The beaker was stored with no lid so the water will evaporate for the next lab…

This causes the shape of the box plot to be quite spread out with the median and quartiles close together. The female writing hand box plot is also the same length as the writing hand box plot; this is because the minimum and maximum data from the writing hand came from females. When putting the male and female writing hand box plots in comparison to each other, you can see that females have a much larger range than the males as discussed before. This causes the female box plot to have a lower, lower quartile and median and a higher upper quartile. The median for males is only slightly higher than the median for females, keeping in mind that males had data from an eleven (11) year old and females had data from a forty two (42) year old. This can cause the data to be slightly swayed as there were not equal age groups for both box…

Procedure: In this lab we mixed many different substances to see if they formed a double replacement reaction. We also looked for precipitants that were formed from the mixing of the different substances. We used barium nitrate, potassium hydroxide, sodium sulfate, magnesium nitrate, aluminum sulfate, and iron (III) chloride in set one. In set two we used potassium chloride, sodium hydroxide, magnesium nitrate, barium chloride, sodium sulfate, and magnesium sulfate. For each set, we mixed two drops of one compound in five wells of a spot plate. We then added two drops of all the other substances to the compound. We repeated this procedure for set two. If a precipitant formed from any solution, we recorded the color on our data table. If no precipitant formed, we recorded NR. After mixing and recording all the compounds we rinsed to spot plate thoroughly with water.…

In order to create successful chemical reactions, we followed the procedures properly. We started with a small amount of cooper powder in a beaker, and added nitric acid to it while the beaker was under a fume hood. We removed the beaker as soon as it was safe to and next we added 25mL of water to the current blue solution. We then added sodium hydroxide to the beaker and then proceeded to place the beaker on to a hotplate and stir the solution with a stirring rod. We then removed the beaker with tongs off of the hotplate and filtered the solution with a filter paper and funnel. The next day, after the solid had dried onto the filter paper, we scraped the solid off and into the beaker with a spatula. We then added sulfuric acid and zinc, respectively, into the beaker. We stirred the solution and our final step was getting rid of the liquid waste and observing the copper powder at the bottom of our beakers.…

“The Synthesis of Zinc Chloride”, what a peculiar name for a lab that does not even involve synthesis. Synthesis, by definition, is when two elements are combined in a chemical reaction, but that is not the case. In this lab we are combining zinc, an element, and hydrochloric acid, a compound, but combining a compound and an element is not synthesis, it is single replacement. We are taking zinc and hydrochloric acid and making zinc chloride and hydrogen, a single replacement, but what occurred during that replacement?…

Synthesis and the determination of empirical formulas are two extremely important parts of chemistry. In this experiment, you will synthesize zinc iodide and determine its empirical formula. The molecular formula gives the actual number of atoms of each element in the molecule and the empirical formula gives the lowest whole number ratio of the atoms in the molecule. For instance, the molecular formula of glucose is C6H12O6 and its empirical formula is CH2O. For some molecules such as water, the empirical and molecular formulas are the same. One of the common techniques used to help determine the identity of a substance involves combustion of very small amounts of the substance. By measuring the amounts of water, carbon dioxide, and other gases produced, it is possible to determine the percentage by mass of each element in the compound. From the percentages, it is possible to calculate the empirical formula of the compound. Suppose, for example, that the combustion experiment for a compound that contains carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen gives the compositions as 40.00% carbon, 6.71% hydrogen, and 53.29% oxygen by mass. The goal is to convert mass percentages to mole or atom ratios. Whenever dealing with percentages in a calculation of this type, one of the easiest ways to proceed is to assume that you have 100 g of the substance. Thus 100 g of the substance contains 40.00 g of carbon, 6.71 g of hydrogen and 53.29 g of oxygen. As is common for many chemical calculations, the calculation of the number of moles is one of the first steps. Thinking ahead, once the number of moles is known, the ratio of moles is easily calculated.…

Typically, the zinc oxide is synthesized by several methods (ref); out of these the co-precipitation reaction is one of simple method. Addition of aqueous alkaline solution of sodium hydroxide to the zinc salt solution forms whitish gelatinous precipitate of zinc hydroxide; on dehydration it gets converts to zinc oxide. The mentioned process of synthesis for zinc oxide, we have been modified in such way that, the zinc Oxide –silica -silver composite was synthesized in one pot-one step reaction. In present work we have replaced sodium hydroxide with alkaline solution of sodium silicate. On addition of alkaline solution of sodium silicate to metal salt solution, the alkaline nature of solution converts the Zinc to zinc oxide, at same…
