cancer research
Pretend you are the captain on a sinking boat in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean. Your radio has gone down with the ship. You have one life raft left. The life raft holds five people. You also have only enough water for five people. There are ten people, including yourself, who have the chance to survive. However, if you put all in the life raft, all will die. As the captain, it is your responsibility to decide who is given a place on the life raft and a water ration. You must select the five individuals who are to survive from among the following people:
• A Congressperson who is on the verge of establishing a coalition of world leaders to institute a world peace plan.
• A convicted child molester who is halfway through a rehabilitation program
• A medical researcher who is actively involved in cancer research
• A second-grade teacher
• An exotic dancer
• A professional ice hockey player
• A musician/conductor
• A mother of a preschooler and first grader, who is pregnant with her third child
• A priest
• Yourself
Think about how you would choose the five people or what other alternative you would initiate. Also, think about your own values and your thought process for making the decisions.
In the discussion, discuss the following questions:

As the Captain I know just how to handle this horrific situation. First as captain I must go down with the ship, leaving nine people to choose from. Secondly it is easy to pick off the mom since she is pregnant and will need too much assistance and could only hinder the five people chosen. Third I could cross off the congressman; child molester and second grade teacher, each of them have severe health issues from disgusting life choices and in their careers. They would not have lived past a few years anyway, so I don’t feel bad.
This leaves the medical researcher, exotic dancer, hockey player, musician, and priest to get on the life boat for a chance to survive.

The four main characters in the "Open Boat" are the captain, the cook, the correspondent, and the oiler; also known as Billy. The captain is injured in the shipwreck that takes place before the beginning of the story. Despite his injury he naturally falls as the leader amongst the group of men. Stephen Crane says "...he could never command a more ready and swiftly obedient crew than the motley three of the dinghy." Although the men are no longer on the ship the same understanding and respect is still apparent for their captain. The cook is the most optimistic out of the group. Throughout, the "Open Boat" the cook remains hopeful the men will be rescued. His up-beat attitude helps to keep…

Hardin uses the metaphorical lifeboat in his essay to give his readers perspective of how limited the resources are on earth by reminding them how much limited space they have onboard the boat. He gives us a visual that only 60 people can be inside the boat at once, but if the capacity of people on the boat goes even one person over the full capacity limit, then the whole boat will buckle and no one will survive. But Hardin wants us to imagine that if there are 50 people in the boat, then how do those 50 people determine who they are going to let onto the boat? He…

The two main conflicts expressed in the story are Man versus Nature and an external conflict. The Man had to fight against nature to save the passengers. “Man in Nature. The man in the water. For its part, nature cared nothing about the five passengers.” The narrator explains the external conflict he had by saying “For at some moment in the water he must've realized that he would not live if he continued to hand over the rope and ring to others. He had to know it, no matter how gradual the effect of the cold. In his judgment he had no choice. When the helicopter took off with what was to be the last survivor, he watched everything in the world move away from him, and he deliberately let it happen.” The Man accomplished to save 5 lives by giving his own during the accident. Even Though he knew he wasn't going to survive, he still put himself aside and gave his…

The captain was told the ship can only stay afloat for a couple of hours. He gave the order to call for help over the radio. Couple minutes later he announced to uncover the lifeboats and to get passengers and crew ready on deck. There was only room in the lifeboats for about 1,100 and there was an estimated of 2,227 on board. The lifeboats began being loaded with children first than women. The Carpathia, southeast of the Titanic by about 58 miles, picked up the distress call and began sailing to rescue passengers.…

American Cancer Society, established in 1913, is a national community-based organization that is dedicated to fighting and eliminating cancer through prevention, research, education, advocacy, and service. The organization was established by 15 physicians and businessmen, in New York City, under the name American Society for the Control of Cancer. The name was changed to American Cancer Society in 1945, when the society was reorganized to recognize the new era. The symbol is composed of two serpents and a sword of hope which represent the scientific medical focus and the crusading spirit of the movement against cancer. The society is currently run by volunteers. The number one goal of the organization is to “save lives and create a world with less cancer and more birthdays by helping people stay well, helping people get well, by finding cures, and by fighting back,” (American Cancer Society [ACS], 2013). Over the years, the society has become the “global leader in the fight against cancer,” (ACS, 2013), with close to 12 million survivors in the United States alone. The purpose of this paper is to examine the services as well as health, psychosocial, and educational benefits that the organization provides to their clients and the community. The paper will also discuss the application of the available services in a healthcare setting during the patient discharge planning process.…

The women and children were prioritized above men, but the class or social status still had a play on which the person got on a lifeboat or not. One of the children, Master Frank Philip Aks, was one of the few that was rescued. Aks was traveling with his mother to finally reunite with his father, whom had started a life in America. Aks was rescued in lifeboat 11 while his mother was on lifeboat 13. There were at least 20 lifeboats on the Titanic, Aks and his mother were on one of the earlier lifeboats because of Aks age and his mother’s gender. Not only were they of the right age and gender, they were middle class, and was thought of more importance than the lower class. The majority of the lower class men was locked down below the boat; not even given the chance to survive. There were a percentage of seventy-six lives lost of the third class; while the second class had at the most fifty-eight…
