Blood Typing Lab

Introduction The purpose of this lab assignment was to get a better understanding of blood types and the antigens and antibodies that exist for each blood type. In addition, the goal was set to achieve an understanding of the Rh factor and coagulation. The goal was to determine what suspect’s blood was found at the crime scene.

Materials and Procedures
Synthetic Blood typing kit
Gloves
We used blood typing plates that were marked with wells, A, B, and Rh. For each “Suspect” we would put a drop of their blood in each spot on the blood typing plate. The next step was to put a drop or two of anti- A serum in the spot marked A, a drop or two of anti-B serum in the spot marked B. Two drops of the anti-Rh serum was dropped in the Rh spot. Each well was then stirred with a different stirring stick. The next step required checking for clumping (or coagulation) in each well. Whatever well had a presence of clumping determines what antigens are present and if the Rh factor is present or not. The results were then recorded.

Discussion Based off of the results of the coagulations during the blood typing, the crime scene blood and Suspect 3’s blood are a match. Therefore, we can conclude that Suspect 3 is guilty of the crime. Both blood types were type A and Rh factor, negative. This means that both blood samples had coagulation in response to the anti-B factor and no coagulation to either anti-A serum or anti-Rh serum.
