Dear ladies and gentlemen,

INTRODUCTION

I am glad we have met here on this presentation even if we might be all somewhere else at this beautiful day, so it is a pleasure for me to see you and have a chance to talk to you.
My name is Sandra Gavrilovova and I am a founder and manager of the Food Bank here in Slovakia.
Today, I am going to tell you something about our company, how it all began, what is our primary aim, what we do, for who we do and especially why we do it. Before I start – let me ask you a question: How many of you have a daily access to food without any financial or whatever other problem? I guess everyone. And how many of you have ever threw a food away because you did not like it or you were already too full to eat more or, with no offence, too pampered to pack it and eat it later as you can buy something else? Just answer for your own...

ABOUT FOOD BANK

As I already mentioned, I am going to present you our company, our activities, aims... But first, I will tell you something about both history and creation and then specificaly about us.

In year 1967 John Van Hengel established his first Food Bank in Arizona, USA – today, it is more than 200 of them.

The first European Food Bank was established in Paris in year 1984. It was the answer for the continually more difficult social-economical situation of the french citizens at that time. Among french people, it was the Bernard Dandrel, current chairman F.E.B.A, who believed this idea.

In year 1986 it was opened the first Food Bank in Brussel. Representatives of the Belgian bank and assistants of the French Food Bank Federation signed the bylaws of the European food bank federation (FEBA).

Later it came Italy, Spain, Ireland, Portugal, Greece, Poland and then also Luxemburg, Swiss, Ukraine, Netherland or Hungary.

The principles of functioning of each Food Bank associated in F.E.B.A are crusted in the Chart of the European Food Bank. By accepting the principles it is

The E.U’s main strategy for managing food production the Common Agricultural Policy (C.A.P) was emplaced in 1957, its purpose was to increase production to stabilise food markets, to increase food security and to provide consumers with food at reasonable prices. The C.A.P has been very successful in fulfilling its purpose so much so that now rather than encouraging the growth of food production it is reforming to link at maintaining a constant of food production and looks to address the surpluses, and how these could aid feeding the world. In 1984 71% of the EU’s entire budget was spent on the C.A.P (in fairness if ¾ of a budget for a global organisation is spent on one thing – an agricultural policy you would think it would be rather successful) and in 2007 only 48% of the entire budget was spent on C.A.P this shows how the C.A.P’s support of modern technology and more efficient farming methods has revolutionised the food market to the extent in no longer needs such a vast amount of aid from the E.U. Furthermore the E.U feels that our food production has now become so sufficient and many aspects of it need less attention as they aim to only spend 33% of their overall budget on it during 2013.C.A.P was successful in that the policy is now being turned on its self and to some extent, being used to decrease food production.…

Being active in National Charity League for six years, I have had the pleasure of working with many different philanthropies, my favorite being The Tualatin School House Pantry. Operating out of the basement of a church, the food bank helps to feed families in the community who are struggling financially. While my first few experiences at the food pantry were emotionally challenging, I found them to be very eye opening. I met many people from different backgrounds, yet they all shared the same hardship, the inability to afford food for themselves and their families. Wanting to do more for the recipients, I received training to be one of the personal shoppers.…

She continues, saying that because they are poor and are migrants people look at them as being “stupid.” Towards the end of the video, the documentary follows the Sanchez as they travel to a migrant rest center in Liberty, Ohio. It’s here that the video displays another example of how social location affects the migrant worker family. Eva Vega, a migrant worker and Sanchez family friend, tells of when she went to the food bank in seek of help and is turned away because her family doesn’t make enough money. She was told that she has to have a yearly income of $32,303.00 to qualify. I had always believed that a food bank was available to individuals and families who did not make enough money. Not for those who made “up to” a certain bracket of yearly income. Therefore, I did some research and found out that, according to the Cleveland Food Bank Website, for a family of five, the same family size as Eva Vega, to qualify for aid they must have…

Increasing the awareness of the food insecurities that create the need for food pantries will, in turn, lessen the stigma surrounding them. Knowing that the need for assistance with food securities is a common problem shared by a large part of our population will help them to not feel alone in their struggle and increase the likely hood that they will seek the help of the food pantries. Volunteering at a food pantry makes it possible to personally help relieve the stigma, making those in need feel comfortable knowing that people care and there is help available. Reducing the unneeded shame associated with the need for food will help more people be willing to utilize the food banks to meet their dietary…
