Schemes of work and lesson planning.

Lesson plans are a key part of a teacher’s development. They enable teachers to plan their lessons drawing on skills such as; recording, monitoring, demonstration, adaption, discussion and extensive planning. Effective lesson plans enable a teacher to prioritise and organise the learning and provide a manageable learning environment to adhere to the diverse and complex needs of those in the lesson. Lesson plans set the format for what students are to achieve and how they will do this. Schemes of work essentially form the basis for lesson planning , although schemes of work can be adapted, they are informed by the requirements of the National Curriculum which sets the foundation of what is to be taught. Schemes of Work draw upon the expertise of staff, resource implications and timescales. The scheme of work is an extensive plan that shows subject by subject, key stage by key stage, the outline of what is being taught and how it interlinks with the context of learning, taking into account students prior learning Not only this, Schemes of Work provides parents, teachers, governors and other individuals with a broad outlook on what is to be/being taught.
Long Term planning
This takes into consideration the learning and planning for the year. It is based upon the curriculum framework as well as the schools aims, policies and statuary requirements. It outlines what will be covered for each year group/key stage. Albeit, long term planning is constituted as a team (school) rather than individual, long term lesson plans are the teachers’ plans for implementing the curriculum within the classroom. They should outline the aims to be covered in each subject area, in accordance with the National Curriculum, drawing on teacher’s judgement and knowledge of the needs and ability of the class.     In schools teachers are required to complete long, medium and short term planning this means that it could be planning for the entire year, the term or the week. The long term planning provides a summary of the subject content. A medium term plan shows an overview of the activities and topics example pirates. Short term shows detail such as learning aims, activities, resources, differentiation, staffing, and timescale. Usually a teaching assistant will be asked to help with the short term planning of learning activities this maybe the short term planning. Everybody attending the class such as the teacher, teaching assistant and students should know the lesson objectives which will be displayed somewhere around the classroom. The teacher and the teaching assistant will follow the planning cycle which consists of planning the lesson and what will be happening in the lesson, teaching the subject and completing worksheets (if any) and evaluate the lesson by feeding back to the teacher about what went well and what could be improved next time. A teaching assistant will contribute to the planning by getting resources together, adapt the work to suit a child’s needs, health and safety (informal) by checking if the room is safe enough to work in, the duration of the lesson which may vary with the delivery depending on the lesson. A teaching assistant will contribute to the delivery of the lesson by taking small groups to complete group work, 1:1 if a child may be struggling with a piece of work set by the teacher and needs that extra help, behaviour management dealing with inappropriate behaviour to make the lesson go smoother, record observations by recording did the pupil understand the work what could they improve on in their work, praising the children for good work.     Planning can help practitioners with the daily running of the setting and the activities which take place within. It also helps meet the children’s care, learning and physical needs, as they can keep a record of the child’s progress and easily put activities in place to develop the child’s individual skills further e.g. cutting activity’s to develop fine mother skills and scissor skills. “Good planning is the key to effective learning.
