Art History Midterm study guide
Study Guide For Midterm Slide Exam, ARTH10 03
Spring 2014

Below are the objects/images from your textbook for which you will be responsible on the midterm slide exam. All of the images and info on the midterm will come from this guide except for maybe a couple of extra credits that I will announce in class. There won’t be any tricks or additional material on the test. All illustration numbers on the study guide refer to the illustrations in the 14th edition of the Gardner’s text.
From the art works listed on the complete study guide, twenty will appear on the actual test plus two for extra credit. For each slide that I show on the day(s) of the midterm slide exam, you will need to know the name or description of the object (like “the Standard of Ur,” or “the Narmer Palette”), the culture that created it, the modern country or geographical region it comes from (in the case of Greece or Egypt, the culture and the country are the same), the approximate date (either calendar years BCE or by period when possible—Old Kingdom, Classical, etc.), the artist (if known, which is pretty rare), and questions based the specific information required for each image on this guide. The format will be short answer—just give me the answer in as few words as needed to get it right. You don’t need to write full sentences. In fact, this may slow you down.

Example (not actually on the exam):

I show as the first slide the image from illustration 2-3 from your book, and on your exam sheet the questions matching that number slide are:

1 a. What is the name of this building? b. What culture built it? c. In what modern country or ancient area is it located? d. What is the approximate date? e. There are several possible reasons why the people of this culture built such tall, tower-like structures to support temples. Give one.

So you would write in your blue book,

1 a. The White Temple b. Sumerians c. either Mesopotamia or Iraq would be OK. If I

This paper is a formal analysis of the Marble grave stele with a family group relief sculpture. It is a pentelic marble style relief standing at 171.1cm tall carved by a master. It is from the Late Classical period of Greek, Attic which was completed around ca.360 B.C. . I chose to analyze this piece as apposed to the others because I’m mainly attracted to art and sculptures from the Greek era. The overall color used in this relief is ivory with a few cracks and pieces broken off. There is some discoloration which causes the color to come off as slightly light brown for most of the relief. The sculpture appears larger compared to the other sculptures in the art room. It represents a family which includes a man, his wife, and their child united on one high relief. There is a fourth character that is a part of the relief but she appears to be incomplete. The high relief contributes to the overall size of this sculpture by expanding the shape and proportions of all the characters. The right side is compact consisting of three of the four characters while the left is loose with just a head present.…

In this essay you will be comparing and contrasting two different types of paintings. The same subject matter but different ideas of the same subject. I will be writing about The Last Supper, which was painted by Giampietrino, after Leonardo da Vinci. He used oil on canvas while painting the piece of art. The year that Giampietrino painted this picture was in 1520. Another work of art that I will be writing about will be The Last supper by Francesco Fontebasso. He painted this picture in 1762 using oil on canvas. As you can see from both types of arts, that they were both painted on oil on canvas and both have the same subject matter which is the last supper that Jesus Christ had. To both of these painting’s in person, you can go to the Royal academy of Arts in London to see the Giampietrino piece and Fontebasso’s piece is found in Museum Fund of the State Hermitage in St Petersburg.…

The dual complexity of your desired structure could potentially allow for a powerful architectural presence for this dynasty. Our society has been given a gift in its proximity to various prime natural elements; located in the abundancy of the Nile River, I propose a structure that will not only fulfill the requirements of the building’s functionality, but also be aesthetically pleasing and timeless. I decided on this particular location because a structure of this caliber should be constructed where it will not only stand out but also measure up to the locality. I am aware of your gratitude towards Amun, therefore I chose to locate this structure at the base of the cliff of the west bank off the Nile, facing the Amun temple. This cliff is…
