I. Introduction
Aristotle is considered to be one of the greatest philosophical thinkers of all time. His writings compose of searching 'what is the purpose of life' and 'function of man'. His goal was to know what makes a person’s life well and how we get there. Aristotle believes that the nature of morality is grounded in the function of persons, meaning that we must act in order to become happy and fulfilled. What are the functions of persons and how does one acquire virtue? To live a good life is to aim towards living a good life by acquiring habits that make one become good by doing good. Essentially human activity is aimed towards acquiring happiness for themselves and others to achieve a status of well-being. The idea is that moral excellence is an activity that is in our power and we practice this activity through reasoning. An individual doesn’t do anything for no reason, an individual has reasons as to why one does things, and we act with ends in mind whatever those ends may be. According to aristotle the ultimate end is to contribute happiness to oneself. A person is always searching for happiness by aiming towards what makes him happy and this doesn’t take a day, it takes a lifetime.
Aristotle has an idea as to what the functionalist accounts of persons are which I will introduce in Section two. Next in Section three, I will discuss the connection between virtue and the function of persons. Lastly in Section four, I will elaborate on the doctrine of the mean as described by Aristotle. His writings were way ahead of his time (around 300 B.C.) which is what makes Aristotle one of the most notable philosophers off all time. His wondering of the function of man notes his powerful indepth thinking. I will also provide a conclusion at the end of this essay.
II. Aristotle's view on the functionalist account of persons

    Aristotle states that everything that a man does is for an end purpose. He defines happiness as actions in accordance with reason. If humans live out their lives to their full potential and live according to reason and with virtues, than they can obtain happiness. In today’s world, many think that happiness is got from money, success, and fame. Many people believe that these things are essential for happiness. Aristotle suggests, it is what we do in our life, not what we gain from our life, like money or success, which gives us happiness. He argues that happiness does not occur instantly.     Aristotle believes that everything has a function, and can be categorized according to that. The function is unique to all things of one kind and they have special capability for doing that and for human beings, the capacity for reason is distinctive. After saying this idea, Aristotle mentions that, for each category of being, “the good and the well is thought to reside in” that specific function and thus, for humans, thing that “makes a man good and which makes him do his own work well” are states of characters, which lead him to perform reasoning perfectly (Aristotle, 115) and he calls those character traits, “virtue” (Aristotle, 118).     In this section I will explain Aristotle’s definition of eudaimonia and its relationship to happiness, morality and the virtues. Aristotle defines eudaimonia in the first book of the Nicomachean Ethics as “virtuous activity in accordance with reason” and that this is the highest good for human beings. For Aristotle, eudaimonia can be translated into a “human life of flourishing” since it occurs throughout a person’s life. This lifelong happiness is complete and sufficient in itself, meaning that a person lives it as an end in itself and not for anything else beyond it. An important aspect of reaching our own eudaimonia is to function well as human beings.     Aristotle’s Nicomahean Ethics is a rich text of ancient wisdom, much of which has become ingrained into today’s rhetoric in many schools of thought in the western world. It is with Aristotle’s views on Virtue that this paper is primarily concerned, more specifically with his idea that to have virtue is to display attitudes and actions to a moderate and intermediate degree.     The basic idea behind Aristotle’s book is that the ultimate goal in life is to achieve true happiness. This particular idea makes the most sense to me. “Happiness, then, is found to be something perfect and self-sufficient, being the end to which our actions are directed” (Aristotle, Page 15). This quote states that happiness is the final, the end and all other things will lead up to this. Happiness is stated to direct our actions because people all want to be happy.
