Contributors to Adult Learning Theory

1. How has clinical psychology contributed to andragogy?

Sigmund Freud contributed by identifying the influence of the subconscious mind on behavior. Carl Jung expanded on his knowledge by saying that human conscious possessed four functions: sensation, thought, emotion, and intuition. Erik Erikson provided the “Eight Ages of Man”, the stages of personality development (p.44)

2. How has adult education contributed to andragogy?

Some scholars have studied child learning as it differs from adult learning. Others, such as Howard McClusky, went further to study the adult ability to learn or their potential. Cyril O. Houle searched for a better understanding of adult learning. Allen Tough’s extension centered around several aspects including what and why adults learn, how they learn, and what help they obtain for learning. (pp. 52-55).

3. How has philosophy contributed to andragogy?

Philosophy helped in the adult education movement. The largest philosophy was that adult education would do one of two things: (a) improve adults or (b) improve society (p. 51). Through philosophical treaties, the issue of adult education became a social movement.
