A Memorable Journey as an SSG Officer
A journey worth remembering

I have been an SSG officer for three years. SSG Senator for the first two years but this year, the third one and of course my last, it’s all different. Being one of the council’s eight major officers, being one of those the lower years’ officers look up to made this year’s service much harder yet challenging. At first, it was hard for me to adjust in regard with our works. We were always excused from classes and I wasn’t used to that but as time passed by, I began enjoying the tasks we need to do in spite of the pressure. Planning activities isn’t that easy but with the cooperation from the council’s other members, we did it all. Not every activity may be planned well but at least I could say we did our best. Two of the activities I’d never forget would be the Intramurals and NDEA’s Closing Ceremony. We went through a lot for those activities to be successful but it was all worth it. Nights spent for planning, days under sun and rain for decorating, lunch breaks when we brainstormed, all of those weren’t wasted. They’re part of something I am proud of as an SSG officer. A lot of sacrifices were also done as an SSG officer. Being out of the classes, missing so much lessons, going to school even during weekends just for planning and beautifying the student body’s activity isn’t simply an effortless job. There were misunderstandings at first but those made our council stronger. A lot cried because of too much pressure and because of not knowing which thing to do first, what to do and everything. In the end, a lot of new friendships were made. Students from different year levels were bridged to reach a united goal. Different memories happened, ones we’ll treasure even after we graduate and of course, we’ll never ever forget the learning especially about leadership which we all learned from being an SSG officer.

Despite non-selection, my pursuit of this prestigious and challenging position will not be deterred. My naval career, I have continually sought positions of greater responsibility and produced exceptional results in each of those positions. While I take great pride in being a Chief Petty Officer, I feel the experience I have acquired as a Chief will benefit any wardroom I am a member of. It is important to note that I did not submit an LDO-CWO package for FY-14 due to the time constraints I experienced while standing up Naval Beach Unit SEVEN with an under staffed office and operational commitment.…

I also understand that it will be my responsibility to serve as a correspondent. And my planning skills will help me maintain a balance between academics and duties, so that I can fulfill my responsibilities. Due to my experience as the founder and captain of Social Awareness club in my high school, I have seen our club secretary work. Hence, I understand the responsibilities associated with that position and what changes have to be made to be effective as a secretary. Moreover, by running for this position and becoming a secretary, I will get an opportunity to work with the student chapter as well as the national professional organization, ACCP. By starting with the secretary position and understanding the work of E-board, I want to eventually be the president and continue to promote dedication to excellence in patient care, research, and education. I will also get an opportunity to work with seniors, which will be very beneficial because they will guide me. It will also be beneficial for me because I will get a leadership experience, which will be helpful as I enter the professional world. I in the long run floated towards the gathering that had a proclivity towards extracurricular activities. A considerable lot of the children in that group, including myself, were competitors that still had an enthusiasm for information and self-improvement. That one of a kind athletes, volunteering, and scholastics made that group particularly alluring to me in light of the fact that it secured the majority of my hobbies. The other pleasant thing about that community is that we have the ability to become well rounded and develop better communication skills. I assumed the part as the head athletic trainer, as well as academic decathlon and National Honor Society Vice President. Every “clique” was accounted for in our group. Having agreeable blend of all the other communities truly permitted this group to be varied and one of a kind from numerous different groups that the members could have generally been a part of. I was a unique piece of patchwork in the quilt of our…

Not only did I feel proud for making interdisciplinary connections when explaining things, but I was also able to support my friends. My peers would walk into math tutoring completely clueless, but would walk out offering to teach others the material. The excited yells of kids who received As on tests for the first time was worth more than anything else I could’ve done in my free time. Beyond that, I realized support is a universal need. By believing in my peers’ ability, I helped them overcome hurdles that had been there for a long time. Most of all, contributing to the community wasn’t about the hours I put into it, but rather the effects that my service had. My actions can protect the future from the chaos of potentiality.…

During my freshman year of high school, I didn’t even know what the Student Government was. I had no idea that, three years later I would be elected as the first one year SGA President (this means I was only in SGA for one year before becoming president, previous presidents have had two years of experience). I started off high school lost and afraid of the world in front of me. Like many students, I struggled to keep myself together mentally and physically. I didn’t really know what I liked or what really interested me. It wasn’t until my junior year that I found something that I connected with. I’ve always been in love with my school and its spirit. Every year I would go all out for spirit week, and I was that one kid that stood out from everyone…

As an executive officer in Phi Theta Kappa Honor Society, each individual is responsible for a legacy project during the school year. I was responsible for SOS Children’s Village which is a foster care neighborhood that houses children that were abused, neglected and/or abandoned. Even though this was a one-day experience, I was thrilled about the opportunity to work with children as I believe that no child should be denied proper medical care and a healthy home. It is said that time goes by when you are having fun. This was true for our experience as we went four hours over time. I coordinated leadership and team building activities for the children in which both the volunteers and participants enjoyed. Who knew that in five hours’ strong bonds can be developed with a stranger that you might not encounter again.…

Through all of my obstacles that I have endured during my transition to becoming a MSC officer, needless to say, it has been challenging and at times very stressful. However, I never abdicated even in moments I felt weary, discouraged, and defeated. I stayed in prayer every day and each morning I would start fresh to continue my transition. My belief is so firm that I diligently obtained a set of blues and ABUs adding rank along with patches in place to be ready for COT and graduation. I store my ABUs up on the wall in my room as well as keep a picture of my uniform on my phone so I can see what I am striving for each day. This is a reminder for days that are more difficult to keep pushing forward. That is how determined and committed I am to becoming a MSC officer.…

I conferred with loved ones and I accepted my circumstances. It was time to begin anew, and I dedicated the last year to finishing my degree and realizing my purpose. As an English major, I was always passionate about writing, reading, manifesting new interpretations and expressing ideas. I could pinpoint details and construct an entirely new implication. Everything has an underlying meaning that is awaiting to be understood, and life presents us with specific points of reference; and our responsibility is to grasp its…

We’ve been through a lot, KEEP, Hiroshima, Izu, Showa Park... wait I wasn’t really there in all of that. I’ve actually only been here for a year, but coming to ASIJ was a life changing experience, and I feel like I have been here for pretty much my whole life. As this year went by, I already felt like you guys were a part of my family and even in this year, that seemed to fly right before my eyes, we all have been through a lot. Fun times, hard times, sad times, and even those dreadful days with too many tests. Even if this is the American School in Japan, all of us come from all over the world and that’s what makes us global, and I had realized as the year went by that what’s unique about our grade is each and every one of us is different, with our own personality, hobbies, and character. Remember, Bonus 30 SEL guys. I learnt that we all had a unique way of expressing ourselves, which taught me to…
