"The Politics of Muscle" by Gloria Steinem is an essay arguing the difference in strength between men and women. Steinem starts her essay by stating how she grew up in a generation where women didn't participate in a lot, if any, sport activities. She goes on to say that she believes this is the reason why women of her generation believe that it's not what the female body does, but how it looks. Steinem feels that women always seemed to be owned in some degree as the means of reproduction. She believes that women are made to feel ashamed of their strength and that "only when women rebel against patriarchal standards does female muscle become more accepted." (pg 372)…

It was 3 a.m on a Saturday morning. My mother came in to wake us up. It was finally the day I had been waiting for. I had never been so excited to wake up at 3 o’clock in the morning in my life. We had finally arrived at the airport and boarded our first flight to Mexico City. When we had arrived in Mexico we were exhausted from the flight and realized we still had one more three hour flight, then paradise. We went to wait in line to start checking in our bags for our flight. As we were waiting, an hour went by; then, two hours passed, finally, we heard an announcement. We all paused and listened. “Flight 36 to Cancun is cancelled until…

For most of the 100 or so sleepy-eyed people boarding the U.S. Airways shuttle to Boston from New York on a recent hazy Saturday morning, the 35-minute flight could not have been a bigger non-event. But that was not the case for about 20 passengers clustered nervously near the gate. Many clutched puzzle books and bags of sour candy as though they held talismans. Some made nervous jokes, others sobbed quietly. “I have pills with me just in case of an emergency,” said a teenage girl who planned to distract herself on the flight with celebrity magazines. Mariasol Flouty, a 44-year-old software developer from White Plains, held fast to her Sudoku book. “I had plane-crash nightmares,” she confessed. “I woke up very tense.” No one was more terrified than Beth Brenner, a 45-year-old mother of two teenagers from Somers, N.Y. “I was hysterical last night,” she said, “but my son said, ‘You’re going to be O.K.’ ” Ms. Brenner was crying quietly on the…

I woke up tired on a beautiful, sunny, Tuesday morning. It was the day I had to fly to San Francisco for my job on a cruise ship. I had been in between cruises, so I had taken the chance to come see my parents in Newark, New Jersey. Later I realized that it could have cost me dearly. I changed into my pressed, white, long sleeved shirt with khaki pants and my sailors hat that I had to wear for my job as a deckhand. I arrive at Newark Liberty International Airport a hour before my flight, where I hug my parents goodbye. I walk in and go through security easily and go to my gate and wait for thirty minutes until we would be able to board.…

“It was only two days ago and yet it seems like a lifetime, since I heard that awful crash. I was working at the world trade centre in the second floor. On that day as usual I came to work, it was a sunny day and everything was fine. As soon as I entered the premises, I started to work. After a while I heard an awful noise which made me shocked. It was only 8:46 am. Suddenly everyone started to panic but I was confused. Then we were asked to leave the building as soon as possible due…

Everything was silent at first, as are most moment’s right before a major storm. People were roaming around, minding their own business and going about their days like nothing was wrong. It was quite clear most were trying to rush to get everything accomplished before the downpour, but no one knew how soon it would happen. Suddenly, as young eyes searched around the area for a treat for being a good boy during the trip, the wind suddenly picked up. Papers and leaves blew about, some flying in front of his face. This caused him to let go of the hand he was holding onto so he could rub at his eyes. He heard a voice, but the wind was too loud for him to hear over.…

On April 23, 1967, the Soyuz 1 was sent into orbit. This space craft was carrying the cosmonaut Vladimir Komarov. The Soyuz 1 was supposed to be sent into space, stay there, and then another space craft, Soyuz 2, was going to rendezvous the Soyuz 1 and then dock. This did not happen. One of the solar panels on Soyuz 1 space craft was damaged. Although Russia knew that Soyuz 1 still had problems, the government overruled the engineers and launched it anyway. Russia planned on sending Soyuz 2 to fix the solar panel the next day but, a heavy rain the made it impossible for that to happen. When the space craft passed over Russia, Vladimir Komarov decided to try and fall to Russia and deploy a parachute so it would land safely. He tried this plan and during the descent the parachute failed to deploy and it fell into a field at 4,000 mph. Afterward there was a state…

At this time one of the stewardesses came to me and gave me special form for US arrival security. I have a thing about filling out the forms and I felt happy. But after a while, I felt annoyed because of the many forms that I received. At last the airplane came to a bumpy landing. The airplane went over a long way and at the end parked near one of the floating aisles. German passengers talked with sleepy and deadpan faces which made me feel tired, unwilling to get up from my seat. The cabin's cold and timeworn air disturbed me during the nine hours flight. I thought that at least I could smell freedom after that, but still I could not smell anything in the air. Leaving the plane, I wobbled and I felt cramped.…

When I was younger, I was terrified of strangers. I would not talk to anyone who wasn’t family or a close family friend. When extended family came into town, I was very apprehensive. I was very shy and I relied a lot on hiding in my mother’s arms. I wouldn’t even talk to my preschool teachers for a long time, I just cried instead. I refused to talk to anyone at the grocery store or at my sibling’s schools. I do not have any idea as to why I was so timid, it is not like I had a scary traumatizing experience. I was just quiet, but that has definitely changed throughout the years. Now I can strike up a conversation with anyone, and I’m usually the one who won't stop talking. According to my mom, I didn’t really start talking to people until I…
