A Day in Your Life 15 Years from Now
Fifteen years from now, your alarm goes off at 7:30 AM, pulling you out of a dead sleep. You roll over, grumbling a command, and the alarm obediently shuts up. You drift off again, but ten minutes later the alarm returns, more insistent. It won't be so easily pacified this time; the loose sensory netting inside your pillow will keep the noise going until it detects alpha waves in drastically higher numbers than theta waves. Or until it gets the automated password from the shower. Sighing, you roll out of bed, pull your Computing ID (CID) card from the alarm unit, and stumble out of the bedroom. Pausing briefly to drop your CID into your desktop computer, you make your way to the shower and begin washing. Your alarm triggered the shower's heating unit, so the water comes out at a pleasant 108 degrees, exactly your preference. (42 degrees, you remind yourself — the transition to metric still isn't second nature, after almost two full years.) You wash quickly to avoid exceeding your water quota, and step out refreshed, ready to meet the day.

After your shower, you grab a bowl of cereal and head to the living room. Your desktop has already torrented last night's episode of your favorite comedy show, saturating the municipal gigabit fiber connection for almost a full minute to grab the 20-minute program. (You have it set to download in basic 8K, eschewing the 3D and live mashup feeds.) At a spoken command, your TV turns on and begins playback. When a confirmation box pops up on the screen, you state your name to authorize payment for the episode. Unfortunately, because you spent extra time sleeping, you're in too much of a rush to finish the episode. You tell the TV to send the rest to local storage, pull your CID from the desktop, and put it into your phone. While you get dressed, your phone plays back your social streams from last night, filtered to only the closest tier of relationships. After listening to your mother's voice detailing plans for the upcoming

This case study introduces the reader to Personal Video Recorders. The PVR is an interactive digital video recorder used to record and replay television programs received from cable, satellite or local broadcasts. A PVR is a TV recording device that records and plays back television programs. The PVR encodes an incoming video data stream as MPEG-1 or MPEG-2 and stores it on a hard disk within a device that looks much like a VCR. There are options where a consumer can skip through commercials by using a 30-second “auto-skip” function. This capacity is popular with consumers, but not with advertisers (Personal video recorder, 2013)…

Originally invented in 1994, by the Denso Wave Corporation in Japan, Quick response codes, or QR codes were intended to for the auto manufacturer Toyota as a means to track vehicles, as well as vehicle parts, during the manufacturing production stages of building their cars. The QR codes were designed to allow Toyota manufactures to identify parts by scanning a two dimensional barcode, or, QR code at high speed. Since its inception in 1994 QR codes have become one of the most popular types of barcode used in Japan. Used primarily through Smart phones, this technology quickly allows consumers to access information contained in the QR code. In recent years the QR barcodes have infiltrated the United States via consumer advertisers and packaging companies. QR codes can be found on direct mail from advertisers, billboards, buses, internet ads, and have even crossed boarders into the healthcare industry (Wikipedia, 2012). Even the Federal Government is adopting the use of QR codes to reduce the risks associated with mistaken personnel identification. The United States Department of Defense has also boosted identification (ID) security of employees by adopting smart ID cards, which are essentially QR codes. Instead of using the traditional ID card with employee photos, the Department of Defense has issued smart ID cards which act much like QR codes, however, they more are more expensive to produce, and require ongoing IT support. Although they are more expensive than a traditional ID card, The Smart ID cards allow for faster verification of personnel, and may ease some of the pressure on security officials who have to use their judgment based on an ID card flashed in their face. With one scan of the QR code, down to the minute, information can be displayed, which includes, authorizations for the employee, or their qualifications and, or credentials. The purpose of this communication is to explain the advantages and disadvantages of participating in a QR code pilot…

First scene is kids knocking over vases, destroying houseplants, throwing tantrums, etc in one family. “The joys of parenting? You must be kidding!” Ms Collin was so tired and frustrated, and she picked up the phone and complained to her best friend Ms Stone, who also has three kids. “Your kids are doing their homework?! Unbelievable! You must show me your secret!” Second scene is now in Ms Stone’s house, who was just enjoying her time of Yoga while Ms Collin walked in. “You’ve got to have one! It’s amazing!” Ms Stone shared excitedly, “Let me show you my secret weapon, - TiVo”. Then she vividly demonstrated how TiVo works, “you can pause anytime without being interrupted by the phone; with it you can record 30 hours of programming without the hassle of videocassettes. And it’s also intelligent enough to automatically detect and record the shows that you love with a ‘season pass’, and make suggestions just for you. See? Just pause, rewind, fast-forward, pause again, etc. You can skip the commercials if you want. I know our kids love the comic show only available at 8 - 9pm every day, so TiVo will record it and then my kids can watch it whenever they want!” Ms Collin is so fascinated by the demonstration and can’t wait to get one herself. Final scene is the slogan, “TiVo, TV your way.”…

It was eighth grade year and we were on a band trip to Buckhannan, West Virginia where we would be the Honorary Band in the Strawberry Festival Parade. That day is the day that I will never forget. We were getting ready to march in the parade; getting all the instruments and equipment ready and putting final touches on everyone’s uniform, when all of a sudden I hear, “Tasha!” several times. I turn around and see my little sister Korie along with her mom and sister.…

Did you know that one of the most dangerous creatures in the ocean can be found right off the coast of Canada? I'm talking about the terrifying Great White Shark. They have about 3,000 teeth that are in rows. The first two rows are for grabbing and cutting. The sharks eat seals, fish and sea lions. Sometimes sharks attack humans because they may think they are seals, especially if they see a shadow of surfers on top of the water. Sharks don't usually eat humans; they just bite them viciously to see if they're tasty. Human bones have been found in the gut of captured sharks, but never a full human skeleton. So watch out for fins in the water the next time you're at the beach.…

I awoke to the penetrating glare of the sun, felt it crawl along my whiskers rising higher and higher with each passing minute. The sun weaved through Ada's blinds like smoke seeping through the room in strands of light that lingered peacefully in the crisp autumn air. I stood stretching and testing each and every sinew as feeling and strength slowly returned to my limbs. As I shook off sleep my senses became more and more attuned. I could hear the loud chattering of pigeons on the roof and see the dust as it danced in the sunlight’s gaze. Gracefully I made my way to the window sill, leaping through the air clawing the wood for purchase as I landed. The top window was slightly askew letting fresh air through in small bursts allowing me to catch scents from the city. I could smell the harbour, fresh fish and sea salt clouding my mind. I caught a new smell it smelled like damp rot and caused a sharp turning pain in the pit of my stomach, I turned my gaze to the source of the odour. Ada sat, peacefully as ever perched upon her chair. This new scent hung like a veil encompassing Ada causing my nose to wrinkle in disgust as I crept closer towards her along the sill. She sat as always perched comfortably in the chair her face was slack and relaxed, as peacefully she rested sleeping it seemed. She was a short and stout lady with shoulder length hair gunmetal grey combed neatly and parted to the right, one thin brown pin pulling her fringe back on the left of her face. She had round spectacles which perched upon the bridge of her nose tilted and slightly askew they framed her way worn eyes, softly shut in quite meditation. I came ever closer the scent growing with every step a truly pungent mix of rot and decay. I could see her skin clearly now like rough parchment flecked mercilessly with brown dots of age it sat loosely strewn atop her features haphazardly, carelessly placed it seemed not quite as it should be. I realised now that something was off, a glance at her chest…
