Topic: Workplace Discrimination against LGBT (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender)

General Purpose: To inform
Specific Purpose: Discrimination occurs against LGBT who are in different industries.
Thesis: In each state people are afraid of coming out in the workplace of different industrials because the chance of get fired or harassed (Throughout the US, those who are LGBT do not come out in their industries due to fear of harassment or getting fired).

Introduction
Attention Graber : Discrimination in the workplace continues within society against females, races, religion, age, and sexuality.
Reason to Listen: To prevent workplace discrimination happening again in our generation.
Thesis Statement: In each state people are afraid of coming out in the workplace of different industrials because the chance of get fired or harassed. (Throughout the US, those who are LGBT do not come out in their industries due to fear of harassment or getting fired.)
Credibility Statement:
My personal connection to this topic is that I know people who are discriminated in their workplace because of their sexuality.
The sources that I am using in this speech are journal articles from Jstor, newspaper articles , news websites and court cases.
Preview of the Main Point:
First, differences between states.
Second, changes throughout the decades, the influence of discrimination in the FBI .
Third, international business.

Body States that have laws that protect people from workplace discrimination in contrast to states that do nothave laws that protect people from workplace discrimination.
In the United States, there are 16 states that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity.

    When you go to work, you clock in, and you go about doing your job. You converse with your coworkers. You go to lunch with your co-workers. You even talk about what each of you is going to do on the weekend. This is a normal routine for you and for most people. Well, for some people, it is not.     Discrimination against lesbians and gays is common in the workplace. Sole proprietors, managing partners, and corporate personnel officers can and often do make hiring, promoting, and firing decisions based on an individual’s real or perceived sexual orientation. Lesbian and gay job applicants are turned down and lesbian and gay employees are passed over for promotion or even fired by employers who view homosexuality as somehow detrimental to job performance or harmful to the company’s public profile. Such discrimination frequently results from the personal biases of individual decision makers. It is rarely written into company policy and thus is difficult to trace. However, in January 1991, Cracker Barrel Old Country Store, Inc., a chain of family restaurants, became the first and only major American corporation in recent memory to expressly prohibit the employment of lesbians and gays in its operating units. A nationally publicized boycott followed, with demonstrations in dozens of cities and towns. The controversy would not be resolved until a decade later. In the interim, Cracker Barrel would also face several charges of racism from both its employees and customers—suggesting that corporate bias against one cultural group may prove a useful predictor of bias against others.…

    For this assignment, I interviewed a friend her later 30's of identifies as a lesbian women. In the interview I asked her to discuss some of her thoughts, feelings and experiences related to her work and career. Our interview started with a key question faced by many GLBTQ individuals when it comes to their work life - Is 'coming out' at work a good idea? She reflected on an early experience of hers when she was about 18 and starting a new job. She said that it was not obvious that she was lesbian, so she decided at that time she wasn't going to discuss it since she had a strong conviction that straight people don't have to 'come out.' However, she was unsure if she were to be asked by her employer or fellow co-workers, if she should (or would) tell them.     Currently in some states such as Connecticut, Vermont and Iowa for couples of the same-sex to be married while others ban the practice. The fight to have LGBT civil rights has definitely gained some ground. Not only has the LGBT community had an impact on the world of politics, but the world of business as well. Over fifteen years ago began in the United States, but it is still a fairly new concept in Australia and Europe. The first immergence of the impact of the LGBT community in the business world was in 1973 when Coors Brewing Company was the subject of a boycott by the LGBT. The LGBT community joined to protest Coors ' hiring practices, since Coors used a polygraph test when going through the hiring process and specifically asking an employee of their sexual orientation. Coors ignored the boycott for several years, but made some concessions in 1978, and in 1995 began several countermeasures, including dropping the questions regarding homosexuality and extending domestic partnership benefits to its LGBT employees. The company also hired Mary Cheney as a marketing representative and began advertising in The Advocate (an American LGBT-related newsmagazine) and at events such as Denver 's PrideFest. The change in Coors’ policies and their marketing as well as their participation in LGBT targeted events shows just a small amount of the impact that the LGBT has had on the business world. As more legislation protecting specific groups such as people with disabilities and older workers was passed, more categories were added” (p. xii).
