"Where Have You Gone, Charming Billy?" addresses the inherent violence of war, the involuntary physiological reaction to stress, and the desensitization to violence and death. The first way this story communicates the horrific theme of irony is by Billy Boy's heart attack. Stepping on a mine field, Billy Boy blows off his foot and shocked by the incident, he panics, not been able to control a physiological reaction to stress, he dies of a heart attack. An eye witness who sees this has an intense reaction of the event and can't get his mind off of it. Other soldiers constantly made fun of Billy, but as they laughed about the embarrassing situation that had happened, most soldiers clearly understood the consequences of fear. This ironic passage demonstrates how every soldier needs to be able to control every aspect of their body in order to maintain themselves calm.
