Website Credibility
Website Credibility
Credible Websites vs. Non-credible Websites
Gathering information for academic purposes is very different nowadays. We not only have libraries to do research, we now have the Internet. There are numerous sources we can gather information from while searching the Internet, but we have to be careful in choosing a site that has credibility. A credible website is one that will have verifiable facts and credible editors who approve the validity of the facts (also known as gatekeepers); whereas, a non-credible website will have something or lack of something that will make you question its credibility. A non-credible website will also have questionable sources.
Let’s say I wanted to do research on the costs of housing within the city of San Diego:
Credible Website: http://homes.realestate.signonsandiego.com/ * It’s an authoritive site which equals credibility. * The San Diego Union-Tribune is one of the oldest local newspaper companies in SD so I’m sure their reputation is very important to them. * Known companies like San Diego County Credit Union, Citibank, and Facebook have advertisements on website. * Affiliated with one of the largest vehicle listings site, AutoTrader.com, Inc. * According to the history on the “About the Union-Tribune” page, the newspaper won numerous awards over the years, including four Pulitzer Prizes.
Non-credible Website: http://www.assist2own.com/ * I can’t determine who wrote or published the site. * It looks professional but the “About Us” page doesn’t really give any solid history about the company so it makes me question its credibility. * There are no clues pointing to the credibility of the writer. * Seems like the writer’s motivation is to get people to sign up for the website just to give up their personal information. * With all of the above clues, it leads me to believe this website may be an unreliable source.

Wherever one may go across Chicago, one comes across two types of people. One may come across a person who enjoys reading RedEye, and a one who enjoys the Chicago Reader. However, it can be quite difficult to distinguish the type of person the reader might be. It may not seem like it, but they are a few key details about these two sources of information that set them aside from each other. Aside from its unmistakable colors, these news resources have a different layout from each other, they are intended for different class type, and the contents of these magazines/newspapers set them apart greatly.…

In order to search for the reputable scholarly website one must remember two basic principles: not every website has scholarly related data and not all the data has empirical foundation. The first intention of going to www.google.com will leave one with 1000’s of non-specific results. "Google Scholar" website (http://scholar.google.com), on the other hand will be more relative but not very specific. During previous discussions we have talked about American Nursing Journal. There are several reputable accrediting bodies were identified. (http://journals.lww.com/ajnonline/Pages/AbouttheJournal.aspx). After looking into those sources of ANJ, Committee of Medical Journal Editors was identified. (http://www.icmje.org/) After looking into the category of "Journals Following ICNJE" the American Journal of Public Health website was identified http://ajph.aphapublications.org This website represents an online version of over 100 years old Journal of Public Health (AJPH). This journal is dedicated to publication of original publications of original research in order to advance public health research, policy practice and education (Retrieved from http://ajph.aphapublications.org/about). The website can be further found through MEDLINE.…

The World Wide Web has become one of the most sought after sources of information for consumers since the mid 90’s for health education. They have leaned towards “the Web” in seeking information to help learn about details of different diseases, and in most cases help improve their health. As clinicians, we tend to use the Web as a tool to research current information on many health related topics. This is why it is very important for health educators and clinicians to be able to evaluate the websites being used by themselves and their patients for appropriateness of the website. Today, I am going to critique and evaluate the website CTSNet.org for credibility.…

    Credible vs Non-Credible

Both Credible and Non-Credible sources utilizes domain URL ending in ".com or .org.". Many URLs such as ".gov, .mil, and .edu." tend to be credible however; this form of identification is not just enough. One must be able to have other ways to distinguish a credible site from it’s not so factual counterpart. In order to deem a website credible, we must take into consideration the following points: Is the website consistent? Are we able to first cross check the author? What is the mission/purpose of the site? Is the information provided bias in any which way shape or form? and finally can the sources be validated?. A credible site should also be able to provide you with the date the information was published and how it is monitored or edited for its accuracy.…

A "good" Google search is not the best idea, because there are sites that claim they know their stuff, but in actuality, their facts are either incorrect or made up. Their facts may in fact be correct, but for a different subject that their article is not even about. There are also many sites that can be changed and altered by anyone. There's so many websites that anyone can change because literally everyone has access to change the information to whatever they please, so you never know if the information is truly correct if anyone has permission to change the article. Which is why I look for credible sites with credible authors, companies, or even college sites that have articles for certain subjects. It can take me hours to find two or more credible sources, but that only depends on the topic I am writing…

When doing research and determining which resources are reliable and relevant there is one thing to keep in mind; not all information is created equal. Information can come in many forms and distinguishing the good from the bad can sometimes resemble walking through a mine field. One wrong source and your whole paper can explode. Sure it may not be that dramatic but the bottom line is good information will strengthen your paper; bad information will weaken it.…

To begin, a researcher decides what kind of information he or she needs and where to look for it. Sources usually include other published work, such as textbooks, journal articles, and Internet sources. Having examined a wide range of material from different sources, the researcher then decides how much of it is relevant to the topic at hand. Often, there is so much information available that the challenge is to choose the most reliable and accurate sources.…
