Mom yells that dinner’s almost ready, as Claudia walked downstairs she smelt the amazing smell of food and the sound of pots and running faucets water as confirmation that food was being cooked. Claudia rolled down the stairs in an oversized sweatshirt, Her hair in a knot above her head. When she gets downstairs her mom says “hey weirdo”. One of the first quotes from “The Job Ghetto,” by Katherine Newman and Chauncy Lennon, suggest that the student who made the statement is a naive observer. The student suggested, “If people want to bad enough, they can get a job and make something of themselves. It might not be a great job, but at least, it’s a job. No one has to be poor in this society” (Newman and Lennon, 1995, 347). The student doesn’t quite understand the factors and variables that come into play when one goes out and searches for a job.…

The poem “Thomas at the Wheel” written by Rita Dove is from the collection “Mandolin” in the book “Thomas and Beulah”. The first section of the book is titled “Mandolin” and it is told from Thomas’s point of view. The second half of this book is titled “Canary in Bloom” and this is from Beulah’s point of view. In this poem Thomas has a heart attack and starts to die but it seems as if it plays out in slow motion and it allows for the reader to really experience all of his thoughts and emotions.…

The chapter "Another Gun, Another Unlocked Door" is a chapter from Estelle Blackburn's expository text Broken Lives. This chapter focuses on one night of Eric Edgar Cooke's murderous sprees where he steals a rifle and shoots a baby sitter, once again leaving the city of Perth in the hands of fear and danger. The purpose of this chapter is to fight for Cooke's guilt. It shows that he had no fear of being caught and was a devious man when it came to him stealing, killing and the plans he came up with. Through particular aspects of its construction including point of view, structure, language, personality presentation and tone, our response to the ideas conveyed are able to be shaped and moulded to the ideas that are presented…

“Ugh!”, he grunts from how large the suitcase is. “Will you be able to carry that, Scottie?” she says, her face, worn from time, twists with concern for her son. “Of course”, he laughs. “Okay, if you’re sure.” She says as she opens the metal gate to the front yard. They slowly walk through the cracked pathway until they reach the steps to the porch. Beatrice opens the sturdy door with her keys. “Honey, I’m home!” Scottie yells into the empty living room. “Must you do that every time you come inside the house?” She says fondly. “Of course, I must.” He says as if she should already have known the answer. While they were talking, Alice and Jake, Scottie’s younger siblings, heard his announcement and excitedly ran out of their room and down the beige stairs. “Stop making all that racket!” she admonishes her children. “SCOTTIE!” they yell out enthusiastically. “You’re home!” Alice states, full of wonder that her big older brother is finally back where he belongs. “Well, it’s obvious that I’m home unless I’m an imposer who’s secretly an alien”, He jokes, winking at Alice. “I definitely didn’t miss your humor,” Jake lightheartedly says. “Oh, come on, I tell the best jokes”, Scottie says smiling. “Yeah right, in your dreams”, Jake jokingly teases. “Leave your brother alone for right now. He had a long trip and he’s probably exhausted.” Beatrice gently tells to her…

The last three lines of the poem to me are the most powerful. "That stupid fire couldn't take all of them. Nothing could do that. Nothing", to me it narrator being vulnerable and I believe the narrator for a second lets down that wall he or she has built from the loss of his or her parents (Woodson). The narrator wants to be strong when talking about the loss of his or her parent and he or she may still believe that their parents are not gone, but in the end of the poem the narrator does show the reader that he or she does feel a sense of his or her parents not being there. It is as if the narrator is reminding his or her that nothing can take their parents away completely, but at the same time they have to deal with the fact that part of…

"Once Upon a Time" was first published in 1989. Nadine Gordimer was born in 1923 near Johannesburg, South Africa. She graduated from the University of Witwatersrand. A prolific writer, Gordimer has published more than twenty books of fiction. When Nadine Gordimer was asked to write a children's story she replied with a short story called "Once Upon a Time". Although Gordimer's title is typical of a fairy tale, the story she weaves is anything but typical. Instead of dealing with characteristics synonymous with fairy tales, the author injects an issue that plagues modern day society: security, fear and peace of mind. Gordmier also comments on racial discrimination (that was and is still a problem for South Africa and nearly all other countries).…

Armin’s mother drove us to Chili’s, as she normally did because Chili’s was our hang out at the time, and dropped us off at the front door. We were there a little early because Armin did not want his mother to see his girlfriend. Armin did not tell his mother that he had a girlfriend because he did not know how she would respond to it. Armin, Jordan, and I walked in the front door. It was packed as it usually is on a Saturday night. All the tables were filled with people laughing and carrying on. The waitress then walked up to us with a fake cheesy smile…

It all started from the first day of school when the boy stood alone by the flagpole and watched the other people talk amongst themselves happily. Then he spotted a girl, alone, wearing a faded blue dress and holding a sack lunch. During his paper route, he and Evangeline ran across one another and talked amongst each other. In need of another customer, the boy gave Evangeline one to take home and ask her parents to buy it. The next day of school Evangeline told the boy that his parents said yes. From then on, the paper was delivered under an Osage orange tree in front of Evangeline's house. This went on until graduation, when Evangeline did not show up for the graduation ceremony. The boy asked Evangeline's brother, the school janitor, where Evangeline was. Evangeline's brother told the boy that Evangeline had stolen from her own bank account. He went to visit Evangeline's house after his paper route when a woman stepped out and told him to get away. As he walked across a bridge, he threw a paper under the bridge and as he looked for where the paper landed, he…

Fairy tales are what generations have grown up with, beginning with the Disney princesses including Red Riding Hood. Nadine Gordimer's short story “Once Upon a Time” started out happy and ended abrupt and depressing. The majority of fairytales have a happy ending and overall teaches a lesson. In most fairy tales, the story begins with the problem and ends in happiness. Irony begins in “ Once Upon A Time” when it starts out with happiness and with the characters being content, and then it switches to the problem at the end which leaves the readers thinking. The story is set in South Africa during the time of Apartheid. Apartheid is a system of segregation/discrimination of race South Africans were subject to in 1948. The government caused this separation between whites…
