The book I chose for my book club is “The Skin I’m in”, written by Sharon G. Flake. After Sharon’s daughter was born it gave her the inspiration and dedication to write. Flake wrote short stories for her daughter, and read them at her daughter's daycare. She then wanted to write children's books with an African-American emphasis, this lead to her purpose of writing “The Skin I’m in”. The book was published in 1998 making this Sharon G. Flake debut novel. My reasoning for choosing this book was the content and environment the story is written in. It takes place in a diverse school and community, targeting younger students to love themselves the way God made them. I enjoy books that are sweet, simple, and straight to the point and this book accomplished that. It was easy to read and I can definitely recommend it to my future students to learn a valuable lesson.…

The suspenseful Christian science fiction novel written by Ted Dekker, titled Skin, is set in the small town of Summerville, Nevada, which is surrounded by miles of desert. Wendy Davidson, an escapee from a cult, meets up with Nicole and Carey Swartz, who are two siblings that prefer to avoid discussion about their past. They go to find refuge in Summerville when three tornadoes touch down, and while searching for a doctor, stumble upon Colt Jackson, a police deputy. The four characters make their way to the town doctor’s house, which is built like a fortress. There they meet up with not the town doctor, but Jerry Pinkus, who is a professional gamer. All five of main characters are driven into the doctor’s library, where serial killer Sterling…

Due to the cancer originating from the lower layer of the epidermis, the amount of sun exposure is a major factor in getting it. Since we are constantly exposed to the sun in daily life, about 75-80% of skin cancers are basal cell carcinomas. As a matter of fact, it’s so common that one in every five Americans will develop this cancer in their lifetime. The cancer in the basal layer grows very slowly so it is rare that the cancer spreads far to other parts of the body. But if left untreated for a long period of time it can grow into nearby areas and invade the areas beneath the skin such as bone. But when found at early stages it is easy to treat and cure. “It is not unlikely for the cancer to reappear after previously being cured.” (Skin Cancer Foundation,…

A pressure ulcer is caused by external pressure being applied to prominent bony surfaces of the body such as the elbows, spine, heels, ankles, and in your husbands, case the coccyx. The ulcer formed when the capillary pressure within the tissue was exceeded, interrupting his circulation, and causing his tissue to go without oxygen which caused damage and tissue death (Anders, J. et al., 2010). In the case of your husband, a decubitus ulcer formed which was caused by his lying or sitting for an extended period without repositioning (McCance, Huether, Brashers, & Rote, 2014, p. 1625). Your husband has a stage 3 decubitus ulcer. This stage of ulcer is characterized by full thickness loss of skin with the first and second layer of skin both being destroyed (Ahmed, Papier, Whelan, & Whalen, 2016).…

    Skin grafting

Skin grafting is necessary when a patient is severely burned, which is considered to be a third degree burn. In a third degree burn the epidermis, dermis, and hypodermis are all affected from this this burn. Third degree burns are the most severe type of bun there is because the affect the epidermis, dermis, and the subcutaneous layer. After this type of burn the skin may appear charred, blanched, or bright red and normally the person affected by this won’t feel any pain because of the the nerves that were damaged. After the burn has occurred the patient may require a broad-spectrum antibiotic that is given to treat and prevent infections from a wide variety of bacteria. The patient’s burn/s would place them at risk for infections because the protective orga is no longer there and the immune system is not working due to the burns. Without the protective covering, the patient is not able to protect themselves from bacterial infections. The skin is normally colonized with bacteria but it doesn’t cause a problem because it is usually able to fight it off. Normally with these types of burns it will require weeks to months for the skin to heal. This is an extremely slow process that will sometimes cause patients to have infections or go into hypovolemic shock. however if the patient were to get a skin graft, this process would speed up. The skin graft will help out while the ski is healing, and doctors will usually prescribe antibiotics for the patient to take. The debridement process is often accomplished by placing the part of the body that is burnt into hydrotherapy tank which helps remove the burned tissue. To make sure they minimize fluid loss, and risk of infection, cardiac skin pig skin, or a human amniotic membrane is temporarily place over where the burn is. In doing so this covers and helps protect the skin and it will be removed once the patient…

Myself at the Age of 45

The other day, I was browsing through websites on the internet. Suddenly, a link saying “How Would You Look 20 Years From Now” came to my notice and my inherent curiosity instantly sprang up in my mind. I took no time to put my index finger on the left button of the never-so-tired little creature (mouse, as we call it) to explore my old age appearance. The click on the link took me to the destination site where I was about to convert myself 20 years older. I was required to upload a latest photograph of mine and select a few options like my age, gender etc. on that website to get to see how I would look 20 years later. I rushed to my mail account to get the soft copy of my latest photograph, snapped when I was 25, and uploaded the image instantly. It took a while to produce a 45-year-old Biplob. As soon as I saw the picture, I was in complete disbelief. I could not approve of my possible appearance at 45, even though I knew the image of my older version created by that website would not necessarily be true. What happened to my jaws? How could they look so broken as if they were struck by a moving vehicle coming from opposite direction? Wrinkles around my eyes were pretty much understandable, though not so many at 45. My lips were dry, chin looked pale, and cheeks not glowing anymore. And my eyes were struggling to regain the depth they had now. Overall, I wondered where the grace of my face was gone. All these questions popped up in my mind and left me scratching my head as I found myself in complete shock. I rushed to my washroom and produced myself in front of mirror for a reality-check as I attempted to link up the two faces: one, that I had now, and the one, produced by the nonsense software. In the end, however, I came to realize that may be I was overreacting. May be the face the website produced would not be far from the one I would really have at 45. May be this is what we call ‘the effects of time.’ But, 20 years later, I would probably be not shocked at…
