The perks of Being a Wallflower
Title: The Perks of Being a Wallflower
Author: Stephen Chbosky
Extended written text: Novel

In The Perks of Being a Wallflower, some of the characters in this text judge Charlie’s muteness as him being socially awkward and a freak and does not see it as the way of him coping with his sense of personal responsibility of a disturbin family secret that he has repressed for his entire life.
Although to be completely honest I labsolutely loved the supporting characters for being there and supporting Charlie through his ups and downs and letting him experience new things as they were the ones who helped him get through his first year at High School. Everything had changed when they met his best friends Sam and Patrick. I found it very interesting how they introduced him into their diverse, free thinking and sometimes wild friends because during the school year Charlie experiences his first date & first kiss, he deals with bullies and experiments with drugs and alcohol. It is people like this that are true friends as they would always be there for you and have your complete trust.
The story is about self-discovery and personal struggle. It is an emotional battle that covers Charlie’s experiences while growing up and dealing with his past. As a teenager I can relate to this novel as we have also been in self-doubt and issues in life. This makes me feel like I am also not alone in my feelings as he writes the letters in his own personal perspective.
When reading this book I found that Charlie was a very pleasant person, as in he is a person true to his word. There are no deceit or ill intensions in what he says. One of my favourite quotes in this book is when he says “Im so sorry that I wasted your time because you really do mean a lot to me and I hope you have a very nice life because I really think you deserve it” this was the last letter he sent before he was hospitalized.
“I want to thank you for being one of those people who listens and understands…”

As the novel progresses Charlie begins to evolve into a mature adolescent. Jasper’s influence on Charlie—whether it is from having his first swig of alcohol or changing and broadening his perspective on moral code—is a major element to Charlie’s understanding, as is discovery, mainly of the hypocrisy that runs through the town. In the beginning of the film, Charlie struggles with making friends in the first couple of days of his freshman year. Charlie adapts and interacts well with people and is able to make friends easily and quickly. Chbosky portrays this idea in the wide angle shot of the large crowd in the football game, when Charlie approached Patrick and says “Hey Patrick”. "Hey, you're in my shop class”, says Patrick. Eventually Charlie is told to sit next to him and they continue their friendly conversation and with time meets a girl named Sam. From then onwards they made good friends and was later introduced to more people. Chbosky highlights the fact that Charlie becomes easily able to seek a conversation with someone in front of a large crowd, from which then lead to an invitation to his first ever party. At the party Charlie became emotional after realising the fact that he was being noticed and appreciated by the group of his presence. Patrick raised his drink and asked everyone to do the same. “To Charlie” and the whole group said, “To Charlie". Chbosky shows in the wide shot angle of when Charlie was drinking his milkshake and sitting on a lower level than his two other friends, that he has become recognised by the group, being the centre of attention by being himself, he gains the trust of others and is told important secrets compared to his original life. Charlie demonstrates the benefits of being a wallflower…

To conclude, the operation that Charlie went through in “Flowers for Algernon” was nothing but bad. Charlie did have a couple weeks to feel almost normal (almost meaning he was smarter than everyone around him, making him feel less normal) but that ended quite quickly, possibly killing him. Charlie even came close to suicide during his downward spiral. This is my opinion on the theme for “Flowers for…

"Charlie" is the alias of the adolescent narrator of the novel, who is about to begin his first year of high school. The novel is presented through letters that Charlie writes to an anonymous person about whom he has heard the girls at school talk fondly. Charlie begins his freshman year apprehensive as a result of the death of his only good friend Michael. Michael committed suicide several months before while they were still in middle school. He does not feel that he can lean on his parents or older siblings for support, because they never truly understood him. He also explains that the only relative that he ever felt close to was his Aunt Helen, but she was killed in a car accident on his seventh birthday.…

When Charlie went out to eat with Miss Kinnian, the text stated, "I tried to avoid all discussions of intellectual concepts and to keep the conversation on a simple, everyday level, but she just stared at me blankly and asked me what I meant about the mathematical variance equivalent in Dorbermanns Fifth Concerto." (page 14, paragraph 134). This means that Charlie is so intelligent that he can no longer communicate with people under his intelligence level. In my opinion, this improves Charlie's life because even if he could no longer communicate with anybody, he is no longer oblivious to…

He has built up many expectations of his father, he sees him as his role model while it says, “I knew that when I was grown up, I would be something like him” (l. 11), and “I hoped that someone would see us together. I wished that we could be photographed. I wanted some record of our having been together.” (l.18).…
