The Odyssey Greek gods and goddesses are very important in the Greek culture. There are a few Greek gods and goddesses that play very important roles in The Odyssey. They are Athena, Zeus, Poseidon, and Circe, and Calypso. The relationship between the mortals and the gods are very interesting. Everything that happens in this poem, dealing with the mortals, is related to one of the gods. Without the gods, Greek culture and literature would be nothing. Zeus is the king of the gods. All of the other gods and mortals look up to him. If anybody needs approval of something, they go to Zeus for the answer. For example, when Odysseus was trapped on Calypso’s island, Athena went to Zeus to get him to help Odysseus off of the island. So Zeus sent Hermes, the messenger of the gods, to Calypso to tell her to release Odysseus form her island. Zeus is very important in Greek literature, and culture. This epic poem starts off with Odysseus trapped on a beautiful, nymph goddess’ island. Her name is Calypso. She held Odysseus on that island for seven years before she let him go. She had fallen in love with him and would not have let him go unless Hermes had not ordered her to. This shows some of the principles in Greek culture. Women were not as important as men. There were plenty Greek gods that messed around with different mortal women, but when Calypso fell in love with one she had to give him away. The fact that she did not willingly give him away shows some of Calypso’s personality and spunk. She offered Odysseus immortality if she stayed on the island with her. Even though he denied, she did try her hardest to get what she wanted and thought she deserved. Circe is also a beautiful Greek goddess who trapped Odysseus on her island. After escaping the land of the Laestrygonians, cannibalistic giants who suddenly attack and devour Odysseus’ crew, they land on an island named Aeaea. Sadly, Odysseus’ ship was the

She holds him captive on Ogygia, for “seven endless years [he] remained there” (Homer 7.298). After Odysseus lost his crew, Calypso finds him and brings him to her island, holding him there against his will and delaying his return home by many years. While Odysseus is there Calypso causes him nothing but pain, “all his days he’d sit on the rocks and beaches,/wrenching his heart with sobs and groans and anguish” (Homer 5.173-174). At this point Odysseus truly misses home and his family, and Calypso only makes it worse. Even after seeing the misery Odysseus is in, and being asked to let him free by Zeus, Calypso still attempts to make him stay. Calypso told Odysseus to “preside in [her] house with [her]/and be immortal” then tries to make him pick her over Penelope by saying how hard it is for “mortal woman to rival immortal goddess” (Homer 5.230-231,235). She offers Odysseus immortality so he would choose to stay with her rather than returning home to his wife. Calypso is very harmful to Odysseus and his expedition…

All the gods except Poseidon gather again on Mount Olympus to discuss Odysseus’s fate. Athena’s speech in support of the hero prevails on Zeus to intervene. Hermes, messenger of the gods, is sent to Calypso’s island to tell her that Odysseus must at last be allowed to leave so he can return home. In reply, Calypso delivers an impassioned indictment of the male gods and their double standards. She complains that they are allowed to take mortal lovers while the affairs of the female gods must always be frustrated. In the end, she submits to the supreme will of Zeus. By now, Odysseus alone remains of the contingent that he led at Troy; his crew and the other boats in his force were all destroyed during his journeys. Calypso helps him build a new boat and stocks it with provisions from her island. With sadness, she watches as the object of her love sails away.…

Although Odysseus was portrayed as a hero citizen in Homer’s epic The Odyssey, his fatal flaw, hubris, restricts him from being a good choice for the Greeks to use as a model citizen or hero. After Odysseus escaped the Cyclops lair, he taunted the Cyclops saying, “If I could take your life I would and take your time away, and hurl you down to hell! The god of earthquake could not heal you there.” Angered by Odysseus’ words, the Cyclops prayed to his father Poseidon, which was not good for Odysseus and his men. This shows that after Odysseus escaped from the Cyclops, his ego got the best of him and he couldn’t help, but taunt the Cyclops. It is clear that Odysseus is unable to control his ego, putting him and his crew in danger, which is not a good trait of a leader. Later on, Odysseus receives advice from Circe. After leaving Circe, Odysseus tells his crew, “ Sierenes weaving a haunting song over the sea we are to shun she said, and their green shore all sweet with clover; yet she urged that I alone should listen to their song.” Despite Circe’s warning about the Sirens, Odysseus feels that he is strong enough to endure the Siren’s song and lied to his crew about it. This shows that Odysseus has a huge ego because he feels he doesn’t need to listen to Circe’s warning. Odysseus’ fatal flaw, hubris, hindered his ability to be a good hero…

In The Odyssey, although the gods are often much less grand or magnificent they still play an important role in the story. They function more as spiritual guides and supporters for their human subjects, sometimes assuming mortal disguises in order to do so. There are three gods that are more human friendly in the story; Zeus, Hermes, and Athena, and one who is not so friendly; Poseidon. Zeus is sympathetic to the mortals, he lets the other gods help the humans. An example of Zeus helping Odysseus would be, when Odysseus was with the nymphs, Zeus says to his son, “Hermes, you’ve been our messenger before./ Go tell that ringleted nymph it is my will/ To let that patient man Odysseus go home” (V. 30-33). Furthermore, Hermes also has a very neutral…
