The Odyssey Vs. O Brother Where Art Thou
There are many similarities between O Brother Where Art Thou and The Odyssey. The characters and events that play out are mostly relative to each other. They have the same story plot and outcome. Both of the men are on a journey to get home to their wives and children. Some of the similarities are obvious while others are more diverse and take more thought into the symbolism and meaning behind them.
These two works are parallel to each other. Both begin with an invocation to the Muse. “Sing in me, Muse, and through me tell the story of that man skilled in contending, the wonderer, harried for years on end,” – Homer. There are also other versions of this saying, this is just the most famous.
Everett from O Brother Where Art Thou has the name of Ulysses which is the Latin form of Odysseus. Odysseus is married to Penelope and Everett is married to Penny. Both Everett and Odysseus have their own group of men that stand by their side through everything regardless of how bad the circumstances become. Both men face obstacles brought on by greater forces being Poseidon and the Jail Warden. Odysseus meets Teiresias who is a blind fortune teller and Everett meets a blind man who is also a fortune teller. Cousin Washington Hogwallop sold out Everett for money, so he is considered a pig and the men believed that Pete had been turned into a toad. Odysseus’s men were turned into animals after drinking Circe’s honey wine. Women washing clothes at the river attracted Ulysses and his friends while Odysseus and his crew were amazed by the Song of the Sea. In the Odyssey, the Cyclops has one eye and kills part of the crew. Big Dan, from O Brother Where Art Thou, only has one eyes and is said to have killed the toad or so called “Pete.” Vernon T. Waldrip courted Penny while Everett was away. Suitors were charming Penelope in place of Odysseus during his absence.
Both of the men’s children were told that their fathers were dead. Odysseus’s son is told that his father is at the bottom of the sea by the suitors. Penny tells their three daughters that their daddy got hit by a train. When Everett finally got back to his wife, he got on stage dressed up as an old hillbilly just to talk to her. Odysseus gets turned into an old man just to see his wife again. When Everett’s daughters see him, at first they don’t believe its really him and even after he explains to them how he really is him, they have doubt. Odysseus’s son doesn’t believe its him and even after he reveals himself, he thinks that it is a god just messing with him. All strong leaders find a way to get through all the obstacles that they face. They will be there for their crew and defend them at the best of their abilities. Even though not everybody made it back with Odysseus, him and Everett did everything they could to get back home. Neither of them failed their missions. Both crews stuck beside their leader’s side. Odysseus and Everett did everything they could to see their families. These two story plots go hand in hand together.

Who would have thought that a prison escapee would be modeled after a hero from the ancient Greece era? The movie is both similar to the book in plot line, themes and character traits, although there are also many differences and during certain scenes the movie somewhat mocks the novel. Ulysses (Odysseus’ Latin name) Everett, the hero in O’ Brother, Where Art Thou?, travels a Homeric journey through the Mississippi bible belt. Thus, we find the modern day film depiction of the troubles of a man during the depression is molded by the ancient struggles of Odysseus in Homer’s Odyssey. Though O’ Brother, Where Art Thou? is not and exact reincarnation of the original masterpiece, there are still a vast amount of similarities between the two.…

The movie “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” explains the story of Odysseus in “The Odyssey” through a more modern storyteller. In fact, the movie uses very similar character names so today’s audience can easily relate the movie to the original poem “The Odyssey.” For example, Ulysses is Latin for the name Odysseus. Even Odysseus wife’s name is Peggy, while Ulysses wife’s name is Penny. These similarities are shown throughout the movie not only with character names, but also with the original myths in the stories. Most of the same myths in “The Odyssey” are shown in the movie as well, such as the story of the Cyclops, the Sirens, and many more. While the myths are told differently in the movie, they still maintain the underlying story that was being told. The movie the “O Brother, Where Art Thou?” is a modern depiction of Homers “The Odyssey,” which shares several similarities that show the journey of Odysseus to his family in a modern day more realistic setting and shows the relevance and power of the story to today’s audience through examples in the story of the Teiresias, the Cyclops, the Sirens and Circe, and the transformation into an old man.…

First off, “The Odyssey” is an epic poem based on Ancient Greece and “O Brother, Where Art Thou” is a movie based on the Mississippi from the 1900s. In “The Odyssey”, there are gods and mythical creatures involved such as Zeus, Cyclops, etc. On the other hand, for “O Brother, Where Art Thou” there are government officials and criminals involved, instead of fictional creatures. There are some resemblances in the movie and the epic poem, for example there are Cyclops in both the movie and the epic poem. But the Cyclops in the epic poem is a mythical creature while the Cyclops in the epic poem is just a thief with a blind eye. Both the epic poem and the movie have the same sort of characters in the story but the time setting is different and that leads to some differences in the…

For instance the Cyclops, the Sirens, the Lotus Eaters, and when he finally reaches Ithaca he finds the Suitors whom are trying to compete for his wife. In comparison to Odysseus ' journey and the obstacles he overcame, Ulysses ' character also faces some of the same challenges: The one-eyed Bible salesman resembles the Greek version of the Cyclops, the Sirens who are the same in both the text and the movie, the KKK which act like the natives on the Lotus Eaters Island, and his divorced wife Penny and her new husband resemble the struggle Odysseus encountered with the suitors. In contrast to these similar obstacles, we see that many of their challenges are handled differently. For example, both characters come across the Sirens, however, the actions that Odysseus takes are different then Ulysses. Intelligently, Odysseus and his crew stuffed their ears with bee 's wax in order to avoid temptation from the melodious sounds of the Sirens ' voices. On the other hand, Ulysses failed to reject the temptations of the Sirens, which led to the kidnapping of his friend…

Another characteristic that the movie did a good job bringing out of Odysseus' character was his ruthlessness in doing whatever he has to to get where he wanted to go. We find out that Everett never actually had a treasure to go find. He just told Pete and Delmar what they wanted to hear and whatever he needed to to get them to commit to escaping with him. He knew how to manipulate the two in a way that would inspire them to help him (because they think they are helping themselves). This is similar to Odysseus' and Athena's manipulation of Nausicaa.…

With all the calamities Odysseus had to face, the last thing he wanted to do was kill off dozens of suitors. Being the proud and cunning person Odysseus is he killed off the suitors to be with his wife, Penelope, and son, Telemachus. This event really portrayed Odysseus’ devotion to family and his devotion to his kingdom. It also displayed that through all the misfortune Odysseus went through, was still physically and emotionally strong enough to fight off the dozens of suitors that invaded his home and tried to marry his wife. A similar event happened to Ulysses Everett. Everett and his companions observed a lynch mob ceremony and they noticed that their other companion, Tommy, was going to get executed because of the lynch mob’s cruel and racist practices. By using his wits and physical strength, Everett ran into the mob and interrupted their ritual. Everett knew he had to avenge his friend, just as Odysseus avenged Penelope and…

In O Brother Where Art Thou and Homer’s Odyssey the use of epic themes did not always parallel one another. The personality of the characters in the movie greatly affected whether the Greek’s upstanding views portrayed in the themes, such as loyalty, differed from the epic poem. In a comparable sense, the plots influenced whether the themes, like the homecoming, were similar in the movie and poem. However, the movie is by no means directly based upon the epic poem; you simply cannot view either without perceiving the connection between the uses of epic themes.…

Although these two poems were written about the same subject, they are still different. One difference is the song that the sirens sang to the sailors. In "The Odyssey", the sirens' song was about how if you sail to them and hear their song, then you will leave a wiser man. However, in the poem "SIREN SONG", the song was about how the song is a cry for help.…

The Odyssey and O’ Brother Where Art Thou both shared the same themes and personalities of characters, but what differed was the music. In the movie The Odyssey, the music was very drastic, or it had a very strong effect to it, and the music changed as the people’s feelings did. In O’ Brother Where Art Thou the music had a diverse tune, there were multiple songs with a happy meaning behind it which reflected the character’s moods. In the vast tellings of Homer’s The Odyssey, many character comparisons can be made. Few are more pressing however, than the heroism of Odysseus and his wife, Penelope. Although both Penelope and Odysseus displayed heroic characteristics in The Odyssey, Odysseus was more of a hero than his wife was in the epic. Penelope, while somewhat of a heroine, simply was not depicted by Homer to be the hero that her husband was.…
