The Great Gatsby Theme Analysis
The Great Gatsby – F. Scott Fitzgerald’s use of Motif
Many themes were shown by F. Scott Fitzgerald from the novel, The Great Gatsby. One of the themes is that some of the people aren’t satisfied with the way they live. The motif of cheating provides a different viewpoint of the character and the way they think about themselves.
The way a person acts is the way they are. The motif represents the differences between the characters social status, how they treat others and act around them tells the true story about who they are.
The first reference demonstrating the link between cheating and a characters life is “the fact that he had one [a mistress] was insisted upon wherever he was known. His acquaintances resented the fact that he turned up

‘I did love him once – but I loved you too.’ Gatsby’s eyes opened and closed. ‘You love me TOO?’” he repeated (Fitzgerald 264). Gatsby seems more upset by this confession than the fact that Daisy’s actually married to someone else. To them marriage doesn’t mean much of anything; it’s just a fail of social system. Feelings are what matter.
The way characters feelings travel across one another, George Wilson is sensing things from his wife, Myrtle. He doesn’t know if he should believe it or not “He had discovered that
Myrtle had some sort of life apart from him in another world, and the shock had made him physically sick” (Fitzgerald 160). George Wilson can’t deal with the fact that Myrtle has a lover.
She has some sort of independent existence. Marriage is supposed to be about joining your lives, and so having a separate life is totally betrayal.
These characters in this book all have their own story and what they want in life.
Cheating is mainly what they do, Gatsby with Daisy, and Tom and Myrtle they all have their own story to tell. In reality they are going to have to look forward and into the future and see if that are really right for them. Dissatisfaction is basically revealing how they are and they want so much more than what they already
