Since the end of the Cold War, Africa has been a continent rife with violence mainly in the form of civil war. This can be attributed greatly to the halt of economic and political progress after the two superpowers, the United States and the Soviet Union, no longer needed to compete in Africa. Now that the rivalry has subsided neither country has any real reasons, economic or political, to have as large of a presence in the Post-Cold War era. Not only do these countries receive significantly less aid during this period of history, the governments in the continent have lost some of the already little control they had by no longer being able to pit Washington and Moscow against each other (Perlez, 1992). In July of 2003 Amnesty International first made reports on the conflict in Darfur, followed by International Crisis Group in December. Since this time the area has received a large amount of attention from the international community. Following the massive amount of media coverage, the United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator for Sudan, Mukesh Kapila named Darfur the "world's greatest humanitarian crisis." While there is an agreement of the international community that ethnic groups have been targeted and that crimes against humanity have occurred, there has been debate about whether genocide has or has not occurred, and it is this debate that the United States and the United Nations disagree on, which will be described later in greater detail after a brief history of the conflict.…

In this case, the people of Liberia should have a say in what happens since they are one of the primary victims in this conflict. Luckily, the people, or rather, Women of Liberia had stood up and spoken out before there was any major foreign intervention. They had already made progress in ensuring peace for their people and outside interference was no longer a necessity.…

According to a “World without Genocide” article “Looting, burning food stocks, enslaving and raping women and children, and stealing livestock” (Darfur Genocide), the Janjaweed killed children of all ages and destroyed villages. The Janjaweed raped women and young girls and sold girls as young as eight into sex slavery (Darfur Genocide). They burned men alive and tossed all of the dead bodies into the water supply to contaminate it. Also children were killed in front of their parents and villages were burned down (Darfur Genocide). The Janjaweed only attacked non-Arab villages not the Arab- Muslim villages. The rebels attacked these villages because they believed that the non-Arab villages, even if the rebels hadn’t even visited them, still backed up the rebel groups (U.S Congress Terms). The world has tried to help but has not made progress. An article on the website “World without Genocide” states, “The UN issued a hybrid United Nations-African Union mission (UNAMID) to maintain peace in Darfur” (Darfur Genocide), the world watches the events in Darfur with horrified thoughts. The UN, also known as the United Nations, tried to help Darfur out by sending in help aids and peacekeepers. The Sudanese government rejected the worlds help and kicked out the peacekeeper (Darfur Genocide). Most of the aids that have been sent in have been kicked out, and the world thinks that if all…

The Rwandan genocide started on April the 6th 1994. The horrible genocide lasted about 100 days and approximately 800,000 people were killed. When the Belgium’s ruled over Rwanda they split the country up into two groups or tribes, the Hutus and the Tutsis. When the Belgium’s ruled they put the Tutsi tribe in command. The Tutsis were very cruel and mean to the Hutu tribe, but when the Belgium’s left Rwanda they put the Hutu tribe in charge of the country. When the Hutus were in charge they built up there army and imported many supplies but they didn’t attack the Tutsis until one night. The Hutu president was on a flight on his private plane when it crashed! There was lots of talk about him being died but no one was sure until about 1 hour after the accident. The Hutu radio station came on and confirmed that there president was died and it was all the cockroaches fault (cockroaches were the nickname given to Tutsis by the Hutus). This sparked the violent genocide. The Hutu rebels went door to door murdering any Tutsis that they found. One brave man called Paul Rusesabagina managed to save over one thousand people in the hotel he managed. He gave them food water and shelter. A lot of his refugees were Tutsis including his family. He had to bribe the Hutu rebels with money and alcohol to not to kill them but there came a point where that wasn’t enough. The UN only supplied about 10 soldiers to help guard the hotel but they were not even allowed to shoot the rebels they were not peacemakers but peace keepers. One day the UN did supply the hotel with a lot of soldiers but they did not stay they were only there to transport the wealthy white people back home. Many people died but more than one million were made homeless. Even though there was filming and coverage all over the television and in the news papers no one…
