Shadow of the Almighty
Shadow of the Almighty by Elizabeth Owen

There are people in this life that God calls to the mission field. To give up everything that they own and cherish so they can follow the path of putting people’s needs ahead of their own. Choosing this path is never an easy choice. Often, difficulties involving this lifestyle are leaving family behind, leaving the comfort of a stable home, not knowing where your money will come from, heartbreak, sickness, and even death. This is a life that God called Jim Elliot to.

Jim Elliot was raised in a Christian home. He had two parents that loved the Lord and trained him up in the ways of glorifying God. At the early age of six he recognized his need for Christ and accepted Him into his life. From that day on Jim was determined to live a life dedicated to Christ. He was very passionate about his Lord and shared his faith with everyone he came in contact with.

Jim started to really become interested in missions while he was studying at the Wheaton College. He did missions trips, with college classmates, throughout the United States. After his second year of college he went to Mexico to work with and learn from local missionaries. Jim knew his life was headed in the direction of missions, he just didn’t know where. While working alongside a former missionary, Jim was told about the Auca Indians of Ecuador.

Jim knew his job was not going to be working inside the United States, he just didn’t know if he was supposed to go to Ecuador or India. He was originally planning on going to India, but his curiosity grew so much for the savage Indians of Ecuador that he knew he was being called to South America. After completing college he set out for Ecuador with a friend named Pete Fleming.

They arrived in Ecuador February of 1952. His main goal was to evangelize to the Auca Indians in the jungle. Needing to first learn the language of Spanish he lived outside of the jungle in the village of Quito. After moving into the jungle

Mission Theology would best be described as God’s involvement in mission and how he utilizes his creation, man, to further His Kingdom and the salvific message of his Son, Jesus Christ. We will look at God’s word to see how the Old Testament as well as the New Testament views missions. We will also look at how the nature of God relates to missions. We will identify two key themes or motifs of mission theology and finally, we will address how mission theology relates to (1) a missionary (2) church leaders (3) lay people not in full-time…

Throughout the life of John Robertson, his family and friends played a major role in his life. At the age of 18, having just returned from the war fighting for the Confederates, John was starting a new life. He called himself a seeker. “But it was not riches he sought nor was it adventure. Although he was only eighteen, he had seen, as a rebel soldier and a home guardsman, all of the excitement and danger he cared to see. What he thirsted for now was spiritual fulfillment”(Ash 47). So on New Year’s Day he went to a Baptist church not far away from his aunt and uncles house. What he found when he went there was a preacher who was talking about baptism, not what young John wanted to hear. No, what he wanted to hear was a message that would change his life and help him get to know Jesus. Therefore, for the rest of the service John zoned himself out and sat quietly. The next day, he and his friend George Whillock had to mend a carriage wheel that had gotten broken on the way up from Roane Country. After repairing the wheel he went to see some old friends, the Browns. “He had lived with this family on their little farm for a time in late 1863 and early 1864, while he was employed in…

Álvar Núñez Cabeza De Vaca's epic tales in Adventures in the Unknown Interior ofAmerica is one of the earliest recorded stories of exploration of the Americas. His story begins on April 14, 1528 and continues in great detail for eight long years. His narrative includes his personal experience as well as descriptions of the land he traveled and the native americans that he encountered. The detailed events that are present throughout Cabeza De Vaca's adventure transform him into a man completely different than the one we were introduced to at the beginning of the exploration. The superior mindset that Cabeza De Vaca felt over the natives, the challenges that would threaten his faith and religion, and the view he had of his fellow christians would change him tremendously as an individual.…

Through Gates of Splendor, by Abe C. Van Der Puy, is a Christian classic. It is about five daring missionaries who were willing to risk their lives just to spread the gospel to the isolated Aucas. They even financed this mission from their own pockets. They knew that their lives will be in danger, and they still have their families, but they trusted God and still continued their strong desire in life to spread the gospel to the Aucas. It is clearly evident that their lives were not wasted. Many college students volunteered to enter the foreign–mission field, and more Indians came to church in Shandai.…

Creativeness tells me that I need not to give the typical definition of missions. So I decided to divide the word mission into two words—miss and ion. Fortunately, these words turned out to be of great help. Miss, according to the Random House dictionary is a verb that means to fail to encounter, to meet or to catch. Missing an opportunity to witness is a big “no-no” in the mission field. Chances to win others for the Lord must be seized and not missed. That’s why when given a favorable time, soul-winning is imperative. In the school, there is what you call the sphere of influence or simply friends and classmates. These people can be the starting point of a young Baptist’s mission. Remember, within the circle of friendship is a young Baptist accountable for all of them.…
