“Men are born soft and supple; dead, they are stiff and hard. Plats are born tender and pliant; dead, they are brittle and dry. Thus whoever is stiff and inflexible is a disciple of death. Whoever is soft and yielding is a disciple of life. The hard and stiff will be broken.…
One of the famous excuses of why the rape was done is that they were under the influence of alcohol. The male offender was attributed less and the situation was attributed more responsibility when the offender was drunk than when he was sober. In addition, participants derogated the female victim's character and assigned her greater responsibility when she was drunk than when she was sober. Sexual perpetrators usually consume alcohol before they rape a person.…
It is difficult to categorize sexual acts. For example, urinating on a lover during sex may be perverse to the population at large. However, according to Nagel (1969), if both lovers are aroused, this is not a perverse act. This brings us to question whether sadomasochism is not perverse because of mutual arousal. This complicates and contradicts Nagel’s definition of a perversion. The sexual act includes communication of emotions that Nagel fails to address (Solomon, 1974). Perhaps Nagel wanted to maintain the privacy of sexual intercourse, but the complete event, from attraction to orgasm, must be analyzed.…
On August 25, 2013 the world watched in disgust as celebrity Miley Cyrus twerked and gyrated on stage at the Video Music Awards Show. People caused a fuss over her back up dancers all being African American women with large derrieres, her twerking, pointing to her feminine area on her body, pushing her face in one of her dancers derriere while smacking it, grinding on a foam finger, and grinding on a married man. The sociological perspective on deviance is described by “sociologist Howard S. Becker [as]: It is not the act itself, but the reactions to the act, that make something deviant” (Henslin 190). Although this behavior is deemed as normal in music videos and clubs, it was considered unacceptable because Miley Cyrus started her career as a child star on Disney Channel; a cable network that targets children of all ages. Miley started on a sitcom called Hannah Montana and quickly became popular with kids. Even though the star is now 20 years old and no longer work as Hannah Montana she is still considered that little girl from Disney and it shocked the world for her to behave in such a way.…
For this week’s class I found an article on a case of school crime, the article was published by the inquisitor. The crime in question however is unusual in comparison to the regular school environment crime, in today’s world we mostly hear of school shootings, teacher and student’s sexual relationship, theft and more. This case stems from two teens who were arrested for spiking their teacher’s tea with hand sanitizer.…
An example of human behavior in one society that is considered deviant and not in another would be polygamy. In most of American society, polygamy is considered a deviant behavior. Having more than one spouse is nearly unthought-of though not unheard of in America. The factors that contributed to the perspective of polygamy being considered deviant behavior is based on the Old Testament of the Christian bible stating that marriage is between one man and one woman, which is also homosexuality is frowned upon. Radical sects of the Mormon religion, certain tribes in Africa and Muslims around the world are types of societies that embrace polygamy as a way of life. Some say polygamy can only thrive in a two class society. They say societies that embrace Polygamy, really polygyny, a man having more than 1 wife, would turn into a two class society. However, men in the high class would inevitably have many wives as the men who are low class would be left out from procreating and matrimony. This could as lead to women not being treated equally and being thought of as trophies, as in a game of who can have the most wives.…
There is several and different religions that most of us are not familiar with. When we investigate different types of religions and it helps us expand our knowledge and learn how many different religions and beliefs are out there? Amish (best known as Amish Mennonites) is a religion which most members stay isolated from today technology? Amish religion is a Christian religion that is mainly found in Pennsylvania and the Midwest, also just like is found in Ohio Indiana. Something very interesting about the Amish religion is that their dress code is very reserved and they beliefs are totally different from everyone else; and for this reason the Amish members stay isolated from any type pf contact with the technological world and their new ideas. Amish people always try to live close to one another, in that way they can support one another in case that they need the help.…
Deviant behavior is studied by a researcher that linked personal robbery offences using offender behavior. According to the research, Although there may be parallel between commercial and person robberies-for example, both typically involve groups of offenders (gill, 2000; Smith, 2003) and motivations for committing offences overlap (e.g. money, addiction, and excitement)-there are also differences. For example, commercial robberies are more probably planned; the financial rewards are usually larger (Gill, 2000). The researcher is parallel to the deviant behavior of Harry. His personal robbery of street crimes with high value items as target. The linkage of robbery towards the behavior of the individuals who performed the crime. Most…

The 21st Century has brought an eye-opening window to how people view sex. Sex can be seen and even implied in television shows, music, cartoons, movies, etc. Now that we are in the era where talking about sex is not a taboo, there are alternative forms of sexual arousal that have been practiced such as sadomasochism (sadism and masochism).…
According to chapter seven of Society (2006) deviance is the recognized violation of cultural norms. This type of behavior is offensive to some because what others are doing is wrong. Every culture has their own beliefs and for some people in those cultures anything other than what they believe in is considered deviant behavior. Once upon a time in the United States it was considered deviant behavior for women to work, or for men to stay home with the children. There are still many people from those generations that still believe this. The younger generations do not have the same beliefs and this makes the older generations think the younger generation is being deviant. Certain laws have passed over the years stating that all humans are created and treated equally and laws like that help people understand that any man or woman can do any job without being discriminated against.…
The definition of deviance, in a sociological context, describes actions or behaviors that violate social norms, including formally-enacted rules such as crime, as well as informal violations of social norms such as rejecting folkways and mores. It is the work of sociologists, psychologists, psychiatrists, and criminologists to study how these norms are created, how they change over time, and how they are enforced. Norms are rules and expectations by which members of society are conventionally guided. Deviance is an absence of conformity to these norms. Social norms differ from culture to culture. For example, a deviant act can be committed in one society that breaks a social norm there, but may be normal for another society.…
