PT 1. According to travel with “iexplore 1999-2013” this all began in Scotland’s medieval period. The kingdom of picts, a tribe who came over seas from England, were the first to colonize in the 6th century. They were ruled by king David the first. From his rule the southern areas of Scotland were learning and retaining the English language, but in the northern part of Scotland many only spoke their native language of Gaelic. He also led the people into a 200 year golden age. Sadly at the end of the 13th century the golden age was at an end, as was king David’s rule, and was to be replaced by the first of many wars with England. The first wars of Scottish independence began in 1296 under the command of William Wallace and Andrew moray, they led the rising in northern Scotland in the summer of 1297 Against occupation by king Edward the first of England, they were successful in regaining control of the area for king john ballio. Many wars have plagued the Scottish people, but they always come back, this is due to their strong cultural beliefs.
The cultural aspects of the Scottish people mostly reside in the highlands, the heart of Scotland. This is the historic home of the clans who fought in the last failed battle for Scottish independence. Each clan has its own tartan, and claimed his decent from a common ancestor. Today only 500 clans are registered. As the Scottish people of old did, many people still wear the kilt, in honor of their nation’s history. The kilt is a national dress for Scotland; it is worn with pride at festivals and special

France’s power in Europe at the beginning of the 16th Century, understandably made the English monarch feel threatened; not only out of envy for what he saw as ‘his throne’, but out of fear that his own empire might be taken away. The added pressure of Scotland’s looming presence as a constant potential threat may have been a distraction to Henry. In using these sources it is also clear that even when certain obstacles were overcome by the English, as a means to an end of the Scottish threat that Scotland often came back fighting no matter what Henry did.…

“Tongue nor heart cannot conceive nor name thee!” (2.3. 74). Thy greatest king hath been murdered. Thoughts of sorrow and wondering have filled thee. Who wouldst do such a thing? Was thy host not watchful enough with the most honored man in his presence? Maybe thou should have stayed with his Majesty for he is of the highest nobility and honor possible. Who ever hath committed this crime is guilty of murder and treason. Oh! The people, the people! What shall become of them without thy leader? Will the criminals roam the streets, with the people fearing to leave their homes? All of these are questions with no answers! I do believe it’s my turn to step in and allow myself the privilege of discovering which fiend it was that hath murdered his Majesty, the king. At first, it was thought to be the beast like guards who stood outside the king’s chamber. It deeply concerns me as to why Macbeth would dispose of them so soon after the death of his royal highness without the chance to probe their minds with questions and make them face the rest of Scotland as those whom betrayed their leader. Maybe it was the sons of the great Duncan which have set up the murderous plot to gain the throne for their own selfish purpose. The fact that they have left the country and fled in opposite directions is beyond my knowledge. If they wanted to be king, why murder your own father and flee to a different country…? What about the recently promoted Thane of Cawdor? He holds much too great of an honor and sincerely respected Duncan. But still, he did murder the guards; maybe he was hiding something like a vital piece of information. Now that I think of it, if I had been the one in Macbeth’s position, I too may have lost my temper. In the wise words of Macbeth, “Who can be wise, amazed, temp’rate, and furious,/ Loyal, and neutral, in a moment? No man.” (2.3. 27-28).…

A poem I have recently read and enjoyed is ‘Glasgow 5th march 1971’ by Edwin Morgan. It is about a young couple who have been pushed into a jeweller’s window as two youths try to rob a shop on Sauchiehall Street late at night. Two drivers witness this crime and turn a blind eye to it and drive on like nothing happened.…

Something that has meaning and will last. Heroic deeds like Duncan. Or ideas or writings that change the course of history, like Adomnán. Something new and un-thought before. Something to be looked at, with every new eye, women, and to leave the people united. Respect for creating something that changes humanity, not for violence and dirty sovereignty or simply because you are a man. I want Scotland our land so fair, the hills and mountains we adore, the scenery so grand and rare, to be as it was once more. I am be the Thane of Fife, a woman and a…

People from Scotland first came to the new world in the 1600s. There is some evidence of Scots coming to what is now considered America with the Vikings as slaves. This would be one of the first occurrences of mistreatment they endured (Gormley, 2000). Like other ethnic groups who migrated to the United States looking for a better life they were burdened with stereotypes and misconceptions about what kind of people they were. Over the course of their history people of Scottish decent have been a major force in the building of our country. They were instrumental in the creation and establishment of our current way of accounting, not just our country.…

The Declaration of Arbroath, possibly one of the most famous historical documents of its time, written in the name of the whole of The Community of the Realm of Scotland and fundamental to the unfolding of events in its aftermath. It was a famously eloquent political document in the form of a letter to Pope John XXII in April, 1320. It written by the Barons and The Peoples of Scotland asking him to recognise Scotland’s historical claim of independence, a plea for acknowledgement of right of the people of Scotland to live in peace, free from attack or the threat of attack from the English Crown and to recognise Robert the Bruce as their King. To asses the impact on the Scottish psyche in Medieval Scotland it is important to to understand…

When did the first Scottish arrive and why did they come? “The first Scots in America probably came with the Vikings” is what Wikipedia says on when the first Scots came to America. The first official record of the Scottish being here was in the early 1600’s. There were many reasons for the Scots to come America. Some Scots came to America to avoid prison or worse execution. In that instance they had no choice but to go. Most came to America as indentured servants in order to make a better life for themselves once they had worked off their passage. “At the end of that time, they were on their own and it was up to themselves to make something of their new life in the New World.” (siliconglen.com) The Scottish did not come to America because they were oppressed nor did they come because of a great civil war in Scotland. Most Scots came to America to try and find a better life then they had. For those who came over as prisoners it was a chance for a whole new beginning…

The matter of Irish immigration was not new. Many had transited to Scotland in prior centuries; and a subsequent number found their way to plantations in the “New World” vis-à-vis exiles from the English crown following unsuccessful rebellions. While several clans amongst the neighboring Scots suffered similar expulsions—with tens of thousands banished following the failed Jacobite rebellions during the eighteenth century—any realistic comparisons to the Irish would short-sight centuries of political and religious oppression sustained by the Irish courtesy sitting English…
