Honor, ambition, and tragic heroes. These are the literary elements that consist within both, “Antigone”, and, “Julius Caesar”. Both stories have similar conflicts that can relate one way or another. They contrast as well, with there being different conflicts. One where an ambitious ruler attempts to turn Rome into a monarchy, and another where a man who strives to be an overlord refuses to bury a fallen soldier. Both of the plays “Antigone”, and “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar”, have similarities and differences with the literary elements that they use. One similarity that both plays have is the use of honor. In both plays there is someone very honorable. Brutus is the most honorable character in “Julius Caesar”, and Antigone is the most honorable character is “Antigone”. They both broke the law to do an honorable deed. In doing so, they both ended up dead because of their honorable deed. Also, they both acted upon the divine law of God and did it only because it was the right thing to do, not because they were ambitious. One difference that these plays have concerning honor, is that in “Julius Caesar”, Brutus, was being encouraged to kill Caesar for the good of Rome and had all of the conspirators supporting him. Whereas Antigone had only herself to go to, and the only person aware of her plan to bury Polyneices was Ismene, and she tried her hardest to convince Antigone to not bury Polyneices because she will be breaking the law. A couple examples of honorable acts in “Julius Caesar” would be when Brutus allowed Mark Antony to speak at Caesar’s funeral, even though Antony was the enemy. Another example of honor would be when Antony stated that even though Brutus broke the law, he was still the most honorable conspirator of them all. A couple examples of honorable acts in “Antigone” would be when Antigone buried Polyneices because he deserved a proper burial, even though Creon made it a federal crime to bury him. On the contrary, Creon did bury Eteocles, which was honorable of him to do. Another similarity that both plays have is the ambition that the characters have in the plays. In both plays, Creon and Caesar were well-respected rulers that have almost total control over all of the citizens. Another similarity is that they both wanted total power and control but did not completely have it. They also both would do anything to keep themselves in power. In “Antigone”, Creon was ambitious to rule with an iron fist over his people and not care about their opinion of him. Creon disregarded family relations when it came to crime. Creon was also being ambitious when he refused to bury Polyneices because he was showing that he could do what he wanted and no one would try to stop him. In contrast, Caesar wanted to become emperor and rule with the people on his side. He tried to make himself seem very humble and modest, for example, he denied the crown to become emperor three times to make himself seem humble. Something else ambitious in “Julius Caesar” was how Cassius wanted to take over Rome after they killed Caesar. He didn’t kill Caesar for Rome, he killed Caesar for his own personal gain with no regards to Rome. Tragic heroes consisted in both plays as well. In both plays, both tragic heroes, Brutus and Antigone, had unhappy endings. They both had good intentions but ended up dying for trying to do the right thing. They also both killed themselves in the end. In “Julius Caesar”, Brutus killed Caesar as his honorable act. He had other people, the conspirators, on his side. Also, he was Caesars best friend. In “Antigone”, she buried someone, she didn’t kill someone, like Brutus did. Polyneices was Antigone’s brother, not best friend, like how Caesar and Brutus were best friends. Also, Creon is a tragic hero to some extent because he did change his ways at the end of the story and intended to become a good person and fix everything, but sadly his life fell apart, with everyone close to him killing themselves. In conclusion, both of the plays “Antigone”, and “The Tragedy of Julius Caesar”, have similarities and differences with the literary elements that they use. Both of the stories have honor, ambition, and a tragic hero. They compare and contrast these literary elements but both have generally similar situations.

Antigone and Creon were the two main characters in the play Burial at Thebes. Even though they are antagonistic counterparts, their acting styles were much different. The actor who played Creon chose to modernize the way he spoke his lines. On the other hand, the actor who played Antigone stuck to a more Shakespearian reading; she was much more dramatic with her lines. It is interesting to have the two main characters use two different reading styles; it seemed to make the play less compelling. The actor who played Antigone didn't follow the rest of her ensemble; they all chose to modernize their lines. Instead she made her acting way too dramatic and seemed to be the odd character out; it was hard to take her seriously.…

Antigone’s assumption of the masculine role of hero transgresses cultural norms. Creon’s disregard for the obligations of kinship and the common good is equally transgressive. He is not only head of the family, but king. Ultimately, however, both isolate themselves from both the family and the city by defining justice in terms of the heroic code, which is destructive of…

The traditional dates for the Roman Republic are 509 to 27 B.C. The latter part of this period from 133 to 27 B.C. is known as the late Republic. It is also known as the Roman Revolution. The result of this revolution was the emergence of the Roman Empire and the catalyst has traditionally been linked to a single Roman citizen called Tiberius Gracchus. The wake of his brief political career left Rome much different than it had been. Like a crack in the wall of a dam, Tiberius revealed a weakness in the Roman system of government that would soon spider out of control until it could no longer hold back the deluge of the building political tension. What was this weakness?…

In both plays we see many characteristic behaviors that isolate each character individually as a foil or a parallel character. Such characteristic behaviors can be found between Antigone and Ismene from the play Antigone by Sophocles. Antigone shows strong parallel characteristic behavior after her father, Oedipus died. Antigone goes so far as to ask why she could not join him, whereas Ismene selfishly replies, "O pity! What is left for me?" (v, 1715). Not once does Antigone hesitate about her sense of duty to her father; Ismene, on the other hand, does not seem as unswerving. Another another strong and clear example of the differences between the characteristic of foil and parallel character between Ismene and Antigone could be found when Antigone determined to give her brother, Polyneices, a decent burial. Dedicated to "[serving] the children of her mother's womb" (line 512), she consciously risks her life with this action, which violates Creon's unjust decree. Ismene shows strong foil characteristic behavior when she prefer to follow the rules then sacrifice her life to give her brother a decent burial. Sophocles' play, Oedipus the King have many parallel and foil characters that mirrored and oppose each other as well.…

Throughout the play, Antigone changes from being overconfident to regretting what she did. Her deep loyalty to her family led her to commit acts of civil disobedience, which brought these changes in her character, as well as tragedy for everyone involved. As exemplified in Antigone’s character, it is ok to commit a crime as long as you are doing it for what you believe is right.…

In Antigone written by Sophocles, there are two main characters, Antigone and Creon. In the play, King of Thebes, Creon has announced to everyone in the city that no one can mourn or bury Polyneices. Before Creon became a king, Polyneices and Eteocles were fighting to be the king of Thebes after his father, Oedipus died. Polyneices and Eteocles both killed each other in a war. Creon honored only Eteocles but not Polyneices. Their sister, Antigone believes that one’s body must be buried in order for their soul to rest in peace. Without considering any consequences, Antigone buried his brother, Polyneices which then she was punished. Antigone and Creon share similarities differences throughout the story in personality and values.…

The play exemplifies the love that a family can protect each other with, and how this can connect an audience to the characters. Antigone’s love and respect for her brother was unlike any other character in an ordinary story. Her sacrifice of her life for her family makes her a true tragic hero, especially because she does not hesitate to bury her brother’s body. The emotions of fear, love, pity, and more are aroused from the play and entice the reader further into the story. Antigone is a true classic example of tragedy, and the tragic qualities found in this play can assist the audience in analyzing other tragedies as…

Sophocles’ and Jean Anouilh’s versions of the famous Greek tragedy; “Antigone” raise some interesting themes, motifs, and topics. The most prevalent theme throughout both versions was Human law Vs. Divine law. This helped me conclude that; in both versions of Antigone, characters that only adhere or favour man-made law or divine law, lead unstable lives and themselves suffer through isolation, loss, and deterioration. Both versions have a tragic hero that only adheres to one spectrum of the two laws in discussion, causing them the abovementioned problems. However, in both versions of the play, there are neutral characters that adhere to both spectrums. Because of this balance, these characters avoid a tragic fate.…

Tragedy is a form of dramatic expression based on human suffering, which causes an audience to have catharsis or to feel strong emotional relief. The Greeks and the Elizabethans are notorious for writing many tragedies. Two prime examples from these eras are Sophocles’ Antigone and William Shakespeare’s Antony and Cleopatra. Antigone is the tragedy of a brave sister who tries to honor her brother, while Antony and Cleopatra is a tragedy based on love and being loyal to others. In both plays there is tension between private and public, which can be illustrated by comparing Kreon and Caesar’s fear of public opinion, the betrayal between characters, and concept of hamartia.…

In Shakespeare’s Julius Caesar, Brutus, is the main and most known conspirator in the murder of Caesar, was an honorable man. Brutus had a choice within himself; he could either be loyal to his friend Caesar, or to Rome. He was honorable because he killed his friend out of the love for the greater good and the Romans. Brutus is an honorable man because he did what he thought was right for everyone not just himself, and because of that Brutus deserved the honor. Throughout Julius Caesar there are many different ways that Brutus proves his honor.…

In order to fulfill the requirements of a tragic hero, a hero or a heroine must have certain characteristics. For example, they are required to be a member of royalty, be neither completely good nor completely bad, they have to be responsible for their own downfall due to a hamartia and lastly they need to realize their mistakes and accept their consequences. In Antigone, there are two main characters that fit the criteria of a tragic hero, but only the protagonist, Antigone meets all of the conditions.…

Greek playwright Sophocles wrote the last play in the Theban Trilogy, Antigone, around 442n B.C. The Theban Trilogy consists of Oedipus Rex (Oedipus the king); Oedipus at Colonus, and Antigone, but the play considered the last of the three was, ironically, written first. Only seven of Sophocles’ one hundred twenty three tragedies have survived to the modern era with the trilogy surviving the ages intact. These three plays are perhaps the most famous of the seven, with Antigone performed most often. Antigone tells the story of the title character, daughter of Oedipus (the former king Theban who unknowingly killed his father and married his mother, and who renounced his kingdom upon discovering his action) and her fight to bury her brother Polyneices against the edict of her uncle, Creon, the new king of Thebes. It is a story that pits the law of the gods “unwritten law” against the law of humankind, family ties against civic duty, and man against women. Many playwrights in Ancient Greece used mythological stories to comment on social and political concern of their time. This is what Sophocles may have intended when he wrote Antigone. Based on the legends of Oedipus, Sophocles may have been trying to send a message to the Athenian General, Pericles, about the danger of authoritarian rule…

One theme that is present in both books is pride. Antigone has a lot of pride. She goes against what the government says and buries her brother. She has pride in what she did. Antigone says, "I won 't insist, no, even if you should have a change of heart, I 'd never welcome you in the labor"(Sophocles 63). She wants to be know for what she did. She also says, "Dear God, shout it from the rooftops. I 'll hate you all the more for silence" (Sophocles 64). This just reinforces the fact that she was proud of what she did and wanted everyone to know. The same thing kind of happens in Hamlet. When Hamlet kills Polonius. He doesn 't try to shift blame of to remove blame from himself but he admits to it and then says, "you shall nose him as you go up the stairs into the lobby" (Shakespeare 222). Both main characters have extreme pride in all that they do however the two books do differ in one way. This way is the punishment and treatment of their actions. In Hamlet, Hamlet 's actions are, for the most part, ignored because he hides the body and they cannot pin the murder of Polonius on him. In Antigone, Antigone is witnessed burying the body and when confronted about it she admits fully to the burial. This just shows little differences in the actions of the two main characters.…
