It is said that among the major literary genres recognized today, the ‘novel’ is the most accessible to the majority of the readership. However, in terms of stylistic analysis, novels are the most difficult subjects to analyze. However, a trend that has been observed for the bulk of the twentieth-century is that literary criticism conducted on the genre of narrative texts (i.e. novels) have primarily focused on narrative point of view (Short, 1996, pg. 256) and this is not without cause.…

Geoffrey Chaucer’s the “Miller’s Tale” presents a realistic, sharply detailed picture of common medieval village life in the late fourteenth century by focusing on personal, familial, social and occupational aspects of the characters John, Nicholas and Absolon. Chaucer created many works in the late fourteenth century but in or around 1378, Chaucer began to develop his vision of an English poetry that would be linguistically accessible to all—obedient neither to the court, whose official language was French, nor to the Church, whose official language was Latin. Instead, Chaucer wrote in the vernacular, the English that was spoken in and around London in his day. Through his choice of language, Chaucer shows how the late fourteenth century medieval society influences his writing. Although the “Miller’s Tale” is only one of about twenty-two completed tales of The Canterbury Tales, the tale of the Miller represents evident examples of striking medieval characterizations. The tale of the Miller is set in Oxford in the medieval era of the late fourteenth century. The characterizations of John, Nicholas and Absolon in the “Miller’s Tale” support a detailed picture of a typical medieval life through the focus of the character’s occupational, familial, personal and social aspects of their lives.…

Beowulf has played a huge role in English literature. As the first known epic in the English language, it provides a window into the culture and history of the Anglo-Saxons. The archetypes and underlying themes in Beowulf also help provide the influence this culture had on the author. Beowulf represents the major principles of the Anglo-Saxon hero: bravery, kinship, honor, and fraternity. He is loyal to the Geats and the bond they have. These cultural influences on both the author and the poem have made Beowulf the basis for studying the Anglo-Saxon culture and the history of its…

This article featured in US Catholic Magazine discusses the importance that a pilgrimage can offer our spiritual life. I found out that pilgrimages to important Catholic sites, usually where Jesus or saints traveled are important today as they were thousands of years ago. Before modern transportation, pilgrims took a prolonged journey that lasted anywhere from several weeks to a year. This extended travel really demonstrated a pilgrim’s dedication to their faith. Usually the reasons for this trip were to ask for divine aid, to fulfill a religious obligation, or to venerate an important place or object. Just arriving to a sacred place is only part of their journey. Pilgrims, by embarking on an exterior, physical journey, take an interior journey as well. Even though the journey has changed over the centuries, Pilgrimages continue to function as an important tool for spiritual growth. By actually embarking on a pilgrimage, we can encounter firsthand the global nature of our faith and our Catholic heritage. Seeing Catholics flock from all the corners of the Earth for one specific purpose leaves an unforgettable sense of community within. Overall, the purpose for any pilgrimage, near or far, is to have a physical experience to help us better understand what we cannot come to know through our senses.…
