Policing in Kelsey
The Police Department currently has an annual budget of $16,177,678. With the 15% budget cut, the mayor is requesting from the Police Department, that leaves a new annual budget of $14,235,356, a decrease of $1,941,322. The major change the will affect the fiscal cycle of this budget year is the decrease in the hiring of police officers. The City of Kelsey was in the process of hiring 10 new police officials to fill the 10 positions that were open, due to several retiring police officers and few police officers finding other employment. Now with the 15% budget cut, the City will not be filling those open positions, because saving the City $1,200,000. New maintenance and vehicle cost will also decrease, since not hiring the new officers.
The last fiscal year the City manager allotted $150,000 for 5 new maintenance and vehicles cost for the hiring of the new police officers. As a budget director, I requested a 10% deduction through Police Union in wages or freeze the wages until the next fiscal year, because saving $300,000. In addition, cutting 16 paid holidays a year will save the City a total of $400,000. The Police Union Committee advised the Union has only agreed to a 1% pay cut within the next fiscal year, which will save the City $30,000. The Committee has also agreed to 10 paid holidays a year instead of 16. This will save the City an annual $150,000 a year. The Chief of Police has agreed to cut the training by 80%. The City will save an annual budget of $125,000. With these cuts alone, the City will save $1,655,000 alone.

It's understandable why the council members believe the only option they have to decrease the amount debt is to get rid of the police department. But, if this is the path they’re deciding to take, it could affect the residents in a negative way rather than help them. There may be other options that they haven't discovered yet but I believe the city council should keep digging until the best option is presented. Their main priority should be to protect the residents and think about what the city’s future will look like after making any…

Working as the budget director for the mayor of the city of Kelsey, we have recently been getting numerous complaints from the citizens about an increase in crime and also an issue of the public demanding for more police officers. With the population of the city growing daily, the increase of crime is continuing to progress as well. The mayor has informed us that this past year is the highest increase in crime in the city’s history, that the federal government has reduced the federal pass-through money for the state and that the budgeting group needs to revamp the budget for the coming year. Within this document as the Budget officer, we will take a close look at the present budget to determine the changes that need to be made in order to come up with a solution that is politically feasible. In doing so we will examine numerous things in depth which includes looking at how the changes affect the fiscal cycle of your budgeting, how the preparation, execution, and evaluation of the budgeting cycle would change, our budgeting approach based on the changes and the reasons, differences of the chosen budgeting approach from those not used, a plan to address the crime issue, and lastly a summary of the cost-benefit analysis of your plan.…

Law enforcements, as formal surveillance, could practice situational crime prevention and deter potential offenders more efficiently. The introduction of random breath testing and photo radar enforced by law and executed by law enforcements contributed to the sharp decrease of related crime (Clarke, 2010, p.171). Political leaders could use situational crime prevention to develop a safer city, thus gaining more trust from the general public. As mentioned in Brantinghams’ article, opportunities for crime can be reduced through the design of a better physical environment. For the general public, situational crime prevention is most suitable to create a safer environment and protect them from any loss. When the general public employs the methods of situational crime prevention around their household or business, offenders will be deterred and potential crimes remain as potential…

The issues that I feel are the most important are Budget & Economy, Crime, and Gun Control. The views that Blake Farenthold has towards the budget and the economy are that he does not support an income tax increase on any tax bracket in order to balance the budget. He also does not support federal spending as a means of promoting economic and, he supports lowering taxing in order to stimulate economic growth. As far as crime goes he support mandatory minimum sentences for non-violent drug offenders…

Firemen, policemen, doctors, lawyers, and nurses, when we were children these job titles were primarily the first on our list. When I was growing up I happened to be in a family of police officers that included my dad and a great deal of uncles and cousins. It was like a torch that has been passed down because through the three generations that I know, the candle has been passed to serve as a cop for the community. My father and a couple of my uncles served as local cops in our area. When I was young I didn't know why my family seemed to be so well known and it was because my dad was a cop. As time progressed I could see the livelihood in the community digress. Since time had passed…

Most criminal justice agencies rely on local and state funding to operate and sometimes the state or local officials have to make drastic cuts to the budget because of the economy. Unfortunately, this causes a reduction in staff because the money just is not there to pay the salaries. Budget cuts are probably the biggest challenges that criminal justice leaders face because no one wants a reduction in police officers or correctional officers. The United States needs every man power it can get to combat the war on crime. The crime rate rises when departments are forced to scale back because of the budget. Offenders on parole or probation receive less supervision because the money is not there to supervise adequately each offender. Budget cuts affect each agency differently, but no agency wants the budget to be cut because managers believe the public cannot be adequately protected (Bryant,…

Regional policing is a good approach for efficiencies. Especially between small cities or towns, regional policing can not only actually improve the speed of response times but allow for greater flexibility. The costs alone must not be the only consideration. Policing provides essential public safety, which must be improved, not diminished. However, this approach has its problem that police chiefs need to take care of. In this case, I will use Greenfield and Soledad as examples since these two cities are about to make regional policing happen there.…

    Columbus And Crime Essay

When first approached about this essay, I originally planned to collect data on my hometown, Columbus, and Madison, where I work and attend school. However, as I arrived at the site in which I intended to collect the needed data from, I realized that the site did not list Columbus on the data sheet. This did not come as a surprise. I have lived in Columbus my entire life, and crime has never been an issue, so it did not shock me that it lacked the crime rate or population to make the list. However, this is not anywhere near an unfortunate problem to have. In my time in Columbus, I grew alongside my three siblings, and it has been a peaceful upbringing, to say the least. Never did we fear walking home late at night, or treading through a dangerous part of town, for it did not exist. Consequently, the lack of information forced me to pick another city to base my research on, in which I chose Milwaukee, for its reputation as a less than friendly environment. Although I do not frequent Milwaukee, my brother has spent time there working with the community to make it a better place, which makes it’s crime rate…

It is known to be one of the safest big cities in America. The community is filled with people who look out for each other, the streets are safe, and the residents are notorious to being friendly. The police and fire department work hard to ensure that you will be able to sleep through the night without worrying about something going wrong. “In 2015, there was a 25% decrease, which shows how much work those who patrol every day have done. Burglaries - or unlawful entry of a structure to commit a felony or a theft - dropped 16% from 1,046 incidents in 2015 to 875 in 2016”…

It is convenient to assume that a patrol system is immediately aimed at community safety. But Paul Wiles and Ken Pease caution that community safety is a multi-pronged effort towards the minimization of the number and seriousness of harm in the community; not only crime, but also accidents, serendipitous misfortunes, social volatility, health risks, environmental undesirables, among others, constitute harm. Conversely, they argue that crime…
