For this assignment I chose the work “Piss Christ” by Andres Serrano in 1987. This work is a photograph of a plastic crucifix submerged in urine. According to Serrano this work was an act of devotion as he was a Christian himself. He explains that it possibly reminds people of the torturous death of Christ, but people saw it as a blasphemy and very offensive towards their faith.

2. How do you think the controversy was impacted by each party’s interpretation of this artifact?

I think that Serrano honestly saw this work as something innocent

A balanced amount of controversy can be good but too much controversy can quickly become a problem. For example, the Enola Gay exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, D.C controversy. The Enola Gay exhibition was supposed to be a part of an interpretive exhibit reflecting the end of World War II and the origins of the Cold War. However, because there is two sides to the event and curators had a difficult time creating a balance which negatively affected the painful memory of those involved, thus creating a controversy over history and memory. On the one side, the Enola Gay bomb ended WWII, while on the other side, which sticks out the most is the fact that the bomb killed a lot of innocent civilians, which can be a…

During our tour at the Legion of Honor, we observed art starting from the early and High Renaissance. Next, we went to the Dutch Baroque period, British art, and ended at the impressionists. A most notable work of art from the tour was “The Annunciation” by Master of the Retable of the Reyes Católicos. This oil on wood panel painting was created in the late 1500s, during the High Renaissance period of the art historical cannon. It portrays the biblical event found in the Gospel of Luke in which the archangel Gabriel announces to Mary that she is pregnant with Jesus, the son of God. “The Annunciation” is a religious painting and is an example of the many great works of art from the High Renaissance.…

For this assignment I chose two of the most popular weekly news programs. The first was “Meet the Press” from my local NBC affiliate out of Chicago on March 2nd Sunday morning. It was hosted by Chuck Todd and aired at 10am. The second was from my local Fox channel also based in Chicago and was “Fox News Sunday”. It was hosted by Chris Wallace and aired at 9am on March 2nd Sunday morning. I chose these two shows due to the fact they aired at approximately the same time, on the same day, and therefore were in direct competition. Additionally Fox news is generally regarded to be a conservative based network, while NBC and their affiliates are generally considered to be influenced by liberal ideas.…
