Personal Narrative: Substance Abuse
The other day I woke ever so confused. I did not see anything confusing. I was simply just confused as to what had happened yesterday. I got up out of bed and stumbled to the kitchen. I was walking around and go myself a bowl a bowl of cereal. As I sat down at the counter, I began to think about what had happened yesterday. Once I had finished my cereal, I walked to the sink and set the bowl in there. I than looked out the window and everything started to come back to me. I seen a electric scooter, a penguin with a collar on it, and a Butterfinger wrapper. My mind suddenly became flushed with memories of what had happened with these three random objects.
I remembered that yesterday I woke up from a nap. I had the cold sweats and was shaking. I had rolled off of the bed and was covered in wrappers of Easter candy. I was coming down from a crazy candy high. I had stumbled around the house shaking, looking for some form of sugar. Keep in mind I was not looking for just any sugar but the sacred Butterfinger. Every store had been bombarded by shoppers during the Easter holiday and ever Butterfinger had been sold. I thought there was no hope to cure my addiction. Just as that thought crossed my mind, I seen a commercial flash over the TV saying more Butterfingers had been

Once I had seen my scooter, a penguin with a collar on it, and a Butterfinger wrapper, everything began to make sense. That penguin had saved my life. Soon after, I went outside to see if the collar had a phone number on it. Sure enough the collar listed a number to the owner. I called the owner and he thanked me that I had found his penguin. The owner gave me an address to bring the penguin to later that day. As I arrived at the house the man greeted me at the front door. I asked the man where he came up with the money and resources to buy a penguin, he told me he was the owner of Nestle. This is the company that makes the sacred

I have struggled with OCD, panic attacks, depression and addictive tendencies most of my life. I know from extensive personal experience that my ability to function is due in part to psychopharmacological interventions, the efforts of an exceptional psychiatrist, and abject stubbornness. Through trial and error, the majority of my immediate family members have also found this to be true in their lives. Along with dark brown eyes, undefined cheekbones, and weak ankles, mental health issues and addictive patterns of behavior are simply part of our genetic package.…

Substance abuse considered as a strong risk factor for non-adherence among patients with mental illness, the MHN would have to make a treatment plan addressing his cannabis use and that will help him long term. It is significant to assess the patient for substance use to know how much and how long they have been using and to encourage them to seek treatment (Macaluso & Mcknight, 2013). Different screening, diagnosis, and treatment for substance abuse are important. A combination of Psychopharmacological and Psychotherapeutic interventions shows significant improvement in the treatment outcomes (Manseau & Bogenschutz, 2016).…

This was an eye-opening experience for me, and I’ve gained a new perspective about mental health. I am now able to better understand mental health and correlate it with the nursing process. I don’t let on a whole lot about some of the things that happen in my home life because it never seemed appropriate or necessary in anyway, I never even really told my friends about it. My problems at home consisted of one family member who suffers from bipolar disorder. If that wasn’t enough of a strain, another problem was the fact that another person who is very close to me had a problem with addiction. I have had to deal with this kind of stuff since a young age and even if you get used to it, it weighs down on you until it becomes unbearable.…

The earliest experiences I had with mental disorders came from within my own family, my aunt always felt troubled. When we would go to the grocery store she would often believe that others were talking about her, even when all evidence was to the contrary. I would ask my mother about this and she explained that she suffered from paranoid schizophrenia at the time I had only the most rudimentary understanding of what this disease does. My aunt suffered every day until her dying day, whether it was her delusions or hallucinations, I learned then that psychological disorders are very real.…

My experience at the nursing was definitely a different one. When I first arrived there I was extremely nervous. I had never been to a nursing home or rehabilitation center before and didn't really know what to expect but that there would be older people just sitting around not doing much. After getting over the initial fear of the Rehab center, I was ready to meet my client. Six and a half years ago, on a sweltering August morning, I began my freshman campaign. I remember stepping out of Jones and thinking, “Wow, every girl here is ridiculously pretty.” Hyperbole aside, I was raring to launch. During that fall semester, I had a public speaking class on Tuesdays and Thursdays that started at 7:30 in the morning. I can never remember, but it was either just before or just after the time change, when it’s still dark out at 7:00. Regardless, even under such uncanny conditions, I still had to make that long and winding trek to Burton Hall twice a week. I recall one morning in particular, when a cyclist pedaled right past me as I walked down the sidewalk. For reasons I’m still not entirely sure about, I immediately started…

On a scale of 1-10 of rude interruptions, I’d say getting punched in the face was an 11. I had missed the end of my friend Kyle’s theory about how our history teacher is definitely going to grade our DBQ harder this time, because an upperclassmen just had to get his friend to notice him. Unbeknownst to me, a small shoulder-level freshman, an unspoken rule of high school is that the only surefire way of getting someone to notice you in a crowded hallway is to hit them on the shoulder. Of course, my freshman naivety convinced me that being the same height as a certain someone’s shoulder would not paint a target sign on my forehead and as a result, I learned that valuable lesson the hard way. What ensued was arguably the worst thing that ever happened to me: being noticed by more than two people at a given time. “Oh my God, they’re all looking at me,” I thought to myself, as I desperately tried to avoid eye contact with the offender who punched me. I quickly mumbled, “I’m fine, I’m fine” under my breath, breaking through the wall of people going down the commons stairs, kool-aid man style. I speed walked intensely, trying to put distance between myself…

My use of Ritalin never occurred to me as substance abuse. I had been pretending to be suffering from Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) for some time as an excuse for my low grades in school and Ritalin was prescribed to me. I never took the medication since I knew I was not sick so I hid them. Until A friend of mine came visiting and saw them and informed me that, that was what he used to help him study. He told me that the pills helped one stay awake for hours which I needed. The better part of it is that it increased my concentration and focus during those hours and this was just a great idea.…

Being thrown in jails and institutions has proven over the years to be an ineffective treatment of substance abuse. Clearly there is an issue with the judicial system and its policies regarding addiction. Although the legal system has clear guidelines for punishments, it is still left to the addict to seek out resources to rehabilitate from drugs. Everyone should be very concerned by the staggering statistic of 129 deaths a day from drug overdoses. American’s should not ignore the fact that it is unlikely that drugs will disappear from this country all together, as has been the goal of the government since 1914. Luckily there is harm reduction and rehabilitation which have proven to be effective in other countries, such as Portugal according to statistics from the Drug Policy Alliance. When Americans are found by authorities in possession of drugs they are thrown in jail to be punished by the outdated system. There is little evidence that these punishments are discouraging individuals from repeating the same behaviors. Americans are turning their heads from to this issue instead of talking about what could be done to keep the numbers from rising. Let America live in the solution and not just sit in the problem.…
