my first time away from home
It was my first time away from home and family. I was five years old at the time and I was staying at my granny’s house.

The daytime was always great with Granny. We would run around the garden and play with the dog. In the summer we would listen to the lone cow’s moo in the field. When we heard it we would fall to the ground laughing in the bright, dazzling sun.

I had never slept at Granny’s house before but I did always stay for tea. There was always a smell coming from Granny’s marvellous kitchen. Whether it was delicious cupcakes or scrumptious roast beef, Granny knew best! All the family would be at the table enjoying a piping hot cup of tea. But this time it was different….

Mum and Dad had just left at eight o’clock. Things were still going well. Soon the moment I had been dreading came around. Bedtime. I don’t think I got a single wink of sleep that night. First of all the bed sheets smelt of the horrible stench of old people. Already being freaked out I heard the most terrible sound I think I have ever heard in my whole entire life! Granny was taking out her false teeth.

She groaned as she attempted to get them out, like a wolf howling at the full moon. Then came the plop as the teeth went into the glass of water. Now I was freaked out and traumatised. Just as I thought it couldn’t get any worse, good old Gran started snoring. The windows, walls and doors must have been made of titanium because how she didn’t wake up the county is truly beyond me. Like a roar of a steaming locomotive she went on into the night. Finally after counting 5,672 snores Granny eventually awoke.

It was a miserable day and was raining, not cats and dogs, but mammoths and elephants. When I hauled myself out of bed and carried my legs downstairs, Gran was back to her old self, making me a bowl of Coco Pops and roasting hot milk. Surprisingly Mum and Dad came just before lunch, which was an extremely great relief to me. Driving away with Gran’s frail hands waving at

The poem has amazing imagery setting, which creates the vivid nostalgic atmosphere. Adame begins his story with the image of his grandma rocking quietly in her armchair, maybe for hours, for he stated until her swelled hands/calmed. This is a common scene of elderliness, when people enjoy the calm and slow movement of time, silently rocking on the armchair watching the day passing by. She appears to be a typical grandma, who would feel cold in a hot summer day to wear thick socks and big sweaters. In the writers memory his grandma was really old and weak. She is also a person who would be glad to save any penny, as she laughs greedily going to Payless to buy cheap shoes. Even knowing Payless always sells cheap products, she would still wait until the check comes. This could be an embarrassing memory for a kid to be with his grandma, who goes excessively happy to save a few cents. However Adames flashback is immediately followed by the recall of his grandmothers warm and kind hearted actions. Every morning, when it is still early at dawn sunlight barely lit/the kitchen, his grandma would wake up before everybody else in the family, and prepare breakfast. The sound and smell of potatoes in frying saucepan would always wake him up, as a warm nurturous feeling to start the day. And although she makes nice hot meal for her children, she herself cannot enjoy it. She has lost her teeth, and can only eat bread soaked in coffee. As a kid perhaps he did not understand the feeling of that daily routine, but as he grows up and looks back to the past, it has a heartbreaking emotion. Adame realizes how hard it was for his grandmother. He also remembers how loving and caring she was to him.…

As I walk in through the swinging glass door of my grandparents house, the instant smell of fresh white baked bread hits me. The sweet dough crisped to golden-brown is now in sight. I see it sitting there, on the smooth kitchen table to the left of where I just entered. I know that as soon as I say hello a piece of it will be offered to me. As I continue straight into the open living room I notice my gray-haired grandpa sitting comfortably in his cushioned lazy boy rocker. With every slow rock he makes there is a slight creak that overpowers the sound of the Twins game on their T.V. On the crest of the same rocker lies his favorite dog, Lucy. Her white and black, furry belly expands and compresses at the same rate of the slow rock. My grandma,…

I woke up in terror, I couldn’t breathe, I couldn’t move, all I could do was sit there with shear fear. How is it that after all this time I still have these terrible dreams filled with uncontrollable guilt? Fifty years ago, Fifty years ago and even after all this time I can't seem to ease my pain. Hearing Mary call from downstairs I got up and headed to the kitchen. Mary is my live in maid. “Good Morning, Montresor. How did you sleep?” She looked actually concerned; I should just tell her it might help to tell someone. No, that is a terrible idea. “Good morning, Mary. I slept well thank you for asking. I'm headed to the study let me know when breakfast is ready.” I walked slowly into the study, I know I shouldn’t go in there, every time I…

From cooking us meals to attending all of the sporting events, Nannie was always there for the entire family. She was a hard working woman who was loved by everyone. Her body appeared worn from many years of strenuous work; however, she generally kept a grin among her face. I have never known of her to complain; moreover, she was appreciative for everything that she had in life.Nannie always placed the feelings of others above her own. She was a selfless individual and seemed happy in being so. Many times, Nannie would not feel well; yet, she would always go through her day as normal with a smile upon her face. Though she was a…

Throughout the length of the narrative, her surroundings and its inhabitants seemed to '... float around ...' (pg 84). Along with this she finds a delight '... to snatch a minute now and then.' (pg 84) to take a quick nap. Granny’s mind aimlessly and unconsciously wanders through her labyrinth of memories; it is unable to stay focused on a single thought for comparatively long period. A direct narration would have left blank periods and hanging thoughts through the course of the plot. To ensure that the readers entirely indulge into the story, a continuous chain of thought had to be present. This would ensure the transfer of the entire experiences and relating emotions from paper to imagination. It also has to be kept in mind that the deliberate and continuous switching between the past and the present gives an additional insight of the obstacles an old mind has to overcome; in fact, it helps the readers to relate better with the main character. Furthermore, the ability to switch between the characters also makes Granny’s actual condition more obvious which provides easier interpretation of all the situations. On a logical platform, it would be considered a paradox for a feeble and aged mind to enlighten the reader with one’s thoughts when in reality it cannot even keep track of the activities in the surrounding. To avoid this conflict, the narrator had to…

The husband undressed her, abandoning her only long enough to root beneath the eiderdown for her flannel gown. She stood naked except for her bra, which hung by one strap down the side of her body; she had not the impetus to shrug it of. She looked down at the right nipple, shriveled with chill, and thought, How absurd, a vertical bra. "If only there were instant sleep," she said, hiccupping, and the husband bundled her into the gown and went out and came back with a sleeping draught guaranteed swift. She was to drink a little glass of cognac followed by a big glass of dark liquid and afterwards there was just time to say Thank you and could you get him a clean pair of pajamas out of the laundry, it came back today.…

The rumbling of the wagon. The clacking from the horses. A vigorous smell from the wild plants. The shivers that I get at night. I couldn’t stand it. I stood up from my two feet and began to walk towards to someone that I would know of. “Hey, Pa when are we gonna stop?” I asked. You may be wondering why my Pa isn’t sleeping at this kind of hour. Well, I can tell you why. He can’t sleep at night either.…

It was the last Thanksgiving that my grandparents were there for. How could we ever expect them to be, they slept in small cases underneath the grass. Nonetheless it was merry, still filled with so much “family” that I had never met and I still flinched at the words, “do you remember me?” that parted from unrecognized lips. There was Aunt Helen’s famous apple pie, and the six turkeys, and the dogs running around in the backyard.…

Intrigued about what was happening, I woke up and walked towards the closet. The sound gave me the chills.…
