My First Time Away from Home
My First Time Away From Home
Leaving go to high school was my very first time away from home, and it took a lot of adjusting to a new surroundings. I didn’t have my mother or my grandmother right by my side anymore and I needed to become more independent on doing things on my own. Adjusting to a new city, community, and school was a challenge because I was used to being in my own city, with my old friends, at my old school. I often got homesick and wanted to go home, but I soon adjusted. Another thing being away from home is really a big challenge how to learn things alone, without mother or grandmother. At first when I originally started taking about getting out of the house, and going to school I didn’t realize that it would take so much adjusting. I am used to having my own room at home, but when I went to high school I had share a room with a total stranger. We are friends but are totally different. I had to get used to her TV being on at night, listening to loud music, and different bedtime schedules. Although we are different, we have become close friends because she is the person that I spend all of my time with. We talk about everything, share our belongings, and help each other out. It is hard to believe also that I am so close to a person that was totally stranger less than two months twenty-five years ago.
Being away from home has made me more independent, because I have had to do things on my own. When I was home, my grandmother did everything; from cooking for me to doing my laundry. I have had to learn how to budget the money that I have and make groceries that will last for a while. I don’t have income coming in so I have to wait for my mother to send me money. Going to the store to get food is really different because I’m used to just going to my kitchen and getting whatever I need. The bad thing is after I finish shopping I would have to sneak my food to m y room, otherwise all of my friends want me to give them some and it would be gone before

Dropping out of school was something I never imagined. At the age of 14, two years before graduation I had to drop out of school. Not because I chose to, not because I didn’t want to go and not because I was a lazy child and didn’t want to learn. I had to drop out of school for family issues. At the time my family was very unstable,…

Moving homes and relocating to another city sometimes feels like starting a new life. New home, new friends, and new streets to learn. I moved towns at the age of five and got to see things from a different perspective as I grew older. It was not until the age of 12 that I transferred schools and made new friends. At the time, I was frightened of the idea of moving, but after some time I was truly grateful it had happened to me. My parents, as well as a friend of mine, took a big part of this change and helped me step out of my comfort zone. Through this experience, I learned to accept myself and everything around, as well as to be more open to trying new things.…

I went from being in an urban setting to waking up to beautiful, snow-capped mountains outside of my window every morning. In order to make friends, I adapted, I forced myself out of my shell. I became an active student, going to the youth center almost every day and joining our softball team. When new kids came around, I quickly became friends with them and invited them to hang out with me when they felt up to it. It was hard of course, but my three years there earned me five lifelong friends that I still talk to and visit to this very day. Then, there was the start of freshman year and the second biggest move of my life, my move back to Augusta, Georgia. Though I knew other students there, it was still hard for me to actually speak to them. They now had their groups of friends, and I didn’t want to end up the awkward kid they knew from elementary school. Once again, it took me a while to make any friends at all. I ended up spending a few lonely lunches in the library, but, I did have my phone to fall back on. In the end, I adapted. I found a group of friends, and opened up, expressed myself, and have been friends with those girls, plus a few others, ever…

One thing that I’ve had to adapt to is switching between houses since my parents are divorced. At first it was really annoying since I didn’t have all the things that I needed since some of my stuff went to one house then the rest to the other and I was just super confused. After my parents were together for a few months I got used to it because I had gotten into a routine of when I was with my mom and when I was with my dad.…

When I was sixteen years old I thought my first job was going to be at Mc Donald’s or some type of fast food restaurant. My mother wasn’t really the type that forced me to work at a younger age. Usually a lot of teenagers don’t work until seventeen or eighteen years old. Some times when I was a child I always wanted to be more responsible by doing things on my own, working, and driving, but at sixteen what can I be responsible at. As a young teenager I always looked at job postings. For example I would see chef jobs, office jobs and retail. Sometimes I would look at them just for the fun of it just to see what type of work that was offered in the bay area. Were I m from a lot of jobs don’t exist, and my community is so small that it didn’t create jobs for families. For example a lot of the good jobs like banks, store managers, and high end jobs were towards Oakland and San Francisco. When I was fifteen I heard about this program that helps younger teenagers find summer jobs, and it was something that sparked my interest. When I was sixteen I experienced a piece of responsibility; First I had my own job which generated my own money, second the job was very fun, finally I had a lot of responsibilities at work at a young age.…

I got my first job at sixteen because my parents required it. However, I had no intention of getting a job and wanted to continue being a teenager where I had little responsibility. As I looked around my hometown for a job, I found that there were not a lot available. I finally was able to find a job close to my house at a local Dairy Queen working for minimum wage. Now that I had a job I had to make decisions in time I spent between friends, athletics, and now work. Having a job gave me another outlook on life. It taught me about the importance of money and the consequences of my financial decisions. It also helped me to understand the control I needed on the flow of my finances and along the way taught me many life lessons.…

This great change in my life was when my family was forced to move to a new city when I was fourteen. Not only, was I facing a great change, but it would be a change that would affect me for the rest of my life. When I found out that we were moving, I was frightened. I was going to lose all of my friends. I was going to have to start over. That was scary. Being the new kid in school is awful and upsetting, and I was not looking forward to that at all. If you weren’t able to cook, and had to rely on eating out everyday, you would be “dependant” on the stores or restaurants that you go to for meals. What if they had to close down? What if you had no restaurants around your area? You wouldn’t be able to eat without learning how to cook. If you could cook for yourself, none of these factors would affect you, as you could just cook for yourself, and eat at home. That is “independence”, meaning that you wouldn’t have to rely on others to have meals. If you were married, or you had to feed the kids, cooking would be the better option, than to always rely on takeaways.…
