My Favorite Person
Many people have come and gone in my life, but there is one person that will always be in my life and I will treasure forever. We met each other three years ago at Orofino High School, in band class. This special person I am talking about is my boyfriend, Joe.
Joe is 6'0", with brown hair and hazel eyes. He has a round face with facial hair on his upper lip and his chin. Joe has broad shoulders and has many scars on his hands and arms, including a ‘J’ that was burned into his arm by his friend. Joe was born in Nampa, Idaho, January 18, 1987, and lived there for 16 years. He lived in Nampa with his mother, Katrina, step-father, Terry, and younger brother, Daniel. They also had two dogs, a yellow Sharpie, named Chop, and a black Healer with gray spots, named Jake.
Joe and his family moved to Orofino, Idaho the summer of 2004. They moved to a trailer on the outside of city limits, along Orofino Creek. Orofino Creek is surrounded by many trees and wild life, and is a very quiet place away from the cars driving by on the road, and it has a very calm atmosphere about it. His family lived on Orofino Creek for one year, then they moved to a green, three story house, that has a tree in the front yard and a cement wall along the edge of the yard. Joe’s mom also has many plants that she growing all over the yard in planters lining the walk way up the house. She also has a little garden in front of their porch, where she grows green beans and peas. In the back yard is a fireplace built into the hill. Behind their house are many trees, and a stair case that leads to the raised back yard that circles around the house. Their house is located behind a restaurant called the Ponderosa, the Post Office, and next door to the White Pine Motel.
Joe is the kind of person that looks like he has a tough outside layer and that he would keep to himself. Whenever he wears his green John Deer hat, blue jeans, and his Carhartt jacket, he looks very serious, because you can’t see his eyes

Furthermore, after her relationship with Logan, Joe makes his way into Janie’s life. In Janie’s eyes he is a step above Logan, personality wise. Besides, Janie thought that Joe can give change and chance for her as the pear tree symbolized. Immediately, Joe convinces Janie that he would be a guide into realizing what her dreams in life are. Eventually, Janie comes to show that Joe is not the right one for her based on his power as the mayor. For instance, he says "You ain't never knowed what it was to be treated lak a lady and Ah wants to be de one tuh show you." (page 29). It seems as though he believes that she is not worthy enough to speak or interact with others as well. Before Joe dies, Janie makes a rather cruel speech based off of her…

Up in the mountain tops, just past Payson and just before Strawberry, lies my home away from home. It’s the good old, “Olson family cabin.” Sitting at approximately 5300 feet elevation it is naturally 20 degrees cooler than Phoenix. Which is great because you don't melt in the summer like you do down in the valley. It is not your typical log cabin. Rather, it is a small house with a large loft, almost as big as the house. It is surrounded by tall, rich green pine trees, and for that reason my family has dubbed it the “cabin.” It has beautiful, hand crafted, wooden deck that surrounds the entire outside of the house where we lie to barbecue and just hang out.…

    My Landlady's Yard

In his essay, “My Landlady’s Yard,” Dagoberto Gilb seems to be writing about a climate and culture that he is both very familiar with and also very fond of, as he is in fact ½ Mexican and lives in Austin, Texas. His landlady seems to be in some form of denial regarding her surroundings, which is evident in her attempt to grow grass and “Yankee” plants in a desert climate. I get the impression that the author is implying that his landlady is a “Yankee” but it is rather indirect so I cannot tell for certain. Through his statement that his landlady wants green grass in the middle of the desert, I think Gilb is implying the Proverb “The grass is always greener on the other side of the fence” and by doing so, he is saying that his landlady wants what she can’t have. It makes me wonder if perhaps she had to live in that house at one time and she didn’t want to live there. The author states that she lived there as a young mother and wife. I picture a young woman who is trying to make the most of her domestic imprisonment, living in a place that is very foreign to her, and her attempt of making it feel like home was to plant familiar life, such as the green grass and shrubs that were indigenous to the climate she grew up in. Although there is some sarcasm in the author’s voice, I don’t sense that he is resentful of her. On the contrary, it seems to me that on some level he understands why she has done such a silly thing as to plant this grass and shrubbery out in the desert and is somewhat sympathetic to her. I know as the tenant, he must be obligated to care for the property, but I get the feeling that it goes a bit deeper than that, so he does performs his duty of caring for her property not only out of obligation, but out of sympathy for her. And he does it to his own chagrin, as he is wasting the precious water on this foliage that he knows will not thrive in this…

In the story of “Sowing Change” a garden impacts a neighborhood in a constructive way. The residents of North Lawndale have a great feeling of pride on their beautiful botanical garden. For example, the executive director Leonard expressed that “when you see how it [empty lot] was being used before and how it is being used now, that’s an awesome feeling. It belongs to the community”. The making of the garden has reduced the crime rate in the local area. For instance, the Safer Foundation, which helps men from prison to make the transition to the outside world, has helped ex cons become more passive and learn how to make proper decision and learn how to function in a society. The garden was productive to the neighborhood in the way that it had health benefits. For example, members of the community would have fresh air and exercise in the form of walking while working on the garden. Also, the garden was culturally important because it promotes African heritage, due to the large African American community in the neighborhood. For example, the garden was built in the shape of the African continent and it has a shelter that represents the tribal huts in Africa. The garden is valuable to the…

    An Abandoned House

    • 340 Words

It was a hot, summer's day as I walked on the dirt road with only silence along my side. As I continued on the road I discovered it led to an old abandoned house. I couldn't help but stop for a few minutes and look at the details of the huge, strange shaped house. I noticed that it had been a long time since anybody even took a look at the house. The old house was left to die, alone, with no one to care. The paint was peeling, the windows were broken and the shingles had been torn from the roof, probably by past storms. What caught my eye was that the unkempt yard, it looked like it hadn’t been cut since the house was abandoned, the grass was almost my height and there was nothing but weeds everywhere. I imagined this house would’ve probably been huge and gorgeous in its days. It had three full stories. The fourth floor had an attic where you could sit and see the sunset on the horizon. The house also had a huge porch with large white columns making a fence to support the balcony. The columns were full of dirt; they looked less white and more brownish-black. As I slowly continued to walk past the house, I could hear the wind whistling through the broken windows. I could see the leftovers of the curtains moving gently in the breeze and the grass swishing left and right in the wind. As I was giving the house a final look I thought I saw a silhouette of somebody beside the window gazing upon me so I started to walk a little bit faster. As I walked I wondered how much longer this house could stand up to the rain and wind before it surrendered itself to nature or would people destroy it and replace it. Maybe it would just be left alone there and would continue standing quietly with its dark, window eyes begging for mercy.…
