What were some examples of criminal behavior in the culture? How did they control crime? In thing fall apart the tribal elders regulate crime using the death penalty, exile, and reparations. Some great examples of criminal behavior would be when okonkwo beat his one of his wives nearly to death and when he killed three different people. His first killing was of Ikemefuna. Because the killing was accidental and unintentional, he did not get punished for which in the tribe considered to be the feminine side of a murder. The next killing was of Ezeudu’s son. During the funeral of Ezeydu an important elder of the tribe, okonkwo’s gun accidentally killed the son. The tribe was deeply affected by his actions. His crimes really infuriated Goddess of the earth Ani, so she sent him to Mbanta in exile for seven years. The following killing was of a British messenger. That might have been the male type of a murder so therefore he was to be punished by the tribe by killing. But the British judicial system had taken over and, although okonkwo had already committed suicide. His body was left unburied.
“It is against our custom...it is an abomination for a man to take his own life. It is an offense against the Earth, and a man who commits it will not be buried by his clansmen. His body is evil, and only strangers may touch it.
”How did their religious beliefs affect their daily lives? Manifestation of nature and its elements would be great way to explain this cause. Because they are living in an agricultural society. In which the farmers (the men) relied on the steadiness of the season. They praise the Goddess of the earth and make no mistakes of committing any time of sins against her that would destroy a whole generation and unable their crops to grow properly.
