SAMPLE NAME: Paracetamol Tablets
ANALYSIS REQUIRED: Paracetamol
CLAIM: Each tablet contains 500mg Paracetamol.
THEORY:
Paracetamol
IUPAC Name: N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)ethanamide N-(4-hydroxyphenyl)acetamide
Molecular Formula: C8H9NO2
Chemical Structure:
Paracetamol INN or acetaminophen USAN is a widely used over-the-counter analgesic (pain reliever) and antipyretic (fever reducer). It is commonly used for the relief of headaches and other minor aches and pains and is a major ingredient in numerous cold and flu remedies. In combination with opioid analgesics, paracetamol can also be used in the management of more severe pain such as post-surgical pain and providing palliative care in advanced cancer patients. The onset of analgesia is approximately 11 minutes after oral administration of paracetamol, and its half-life is 1–4 hours. Though acetaminophen is used to treat inflammatory pain, it is not generally classified as an NSAID because it exhibits only weak anti-inflammatory activity.
PROCEDURE:
* Weighed 10 tablets and calculated the average weight of 1 tablet. * Calculated the sample to be taken according to the claim. * Crushed the tablets in a pestle and mortar.
Preparation of the Test Dilution: * Weighed around 86 mg of the sample. * Transferred the sample in a 100 ml volumetric flask. * Made up the volume to 100ml with 0.1N NaOH. * Transferred 2 ml of the above solution in a 100 ml volumetric flask. * Made up the volume to 100 ml with 0.1N NaOH. * Filtered the above solution in a test tube.
Preparation of the Standard Dilution: * Weighed about 51 mg of the standard. * Transferred it in a 100 ml volumetric flask. * Made up the volume to 100 ml with 0.1N NaOH. * Transferred 2 ml of the above solution in a 100 ml volumetric flask. * Made up the volume to 100 ml with 0.1N NaOH. * Filtered the above solution in a test tube.

Acetaminophen is a common analgesic used to treat mild pain. We synthesized acetaminophen by reacting p-aminophenol and acetic anhydride. The amine group on the p-aminophenol reacted with the center oxygen atom on the acetic anhydride to form an amide. We reacted 0.210g of p-aminophenol with 0.240ml of acetic anhydride in the presence of heat, and then cooled the solution in an ice bath until crystals formed. The solid acetaminophen was filtered from the solution and then subjected to a recrystallization using a 50:50 water-ethanol solvent. 0.1484g of crude acetaminophen was measured and after purification 0.0669g of pure acetaminophen was collected. A percent yield of 23% was calculated from our theoretical and actual yield. The melting point…

Aspirin is a salicylate, also known as a non steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). It is the generic name of acetylsalicylic acid and is used clinically to treat fever, pain and inflammation as it works by preventing the formation of prostaglandin. Prostaglandin is the active agent that is responsible for the sensitisation at the nerve endings. It can be administered orally, rectally or by intravenous route. (6)…

We used this specific eluent because it is polar. Since the analgesics used in this lab contained different functional groups, some were more polar than others. So, the polar eluent with a non-polar TLC plate assists in illustrating the different polarity strengths and determining the analgesic drugs in a mixture. Furthermore, the acetic acid component of the eluent used helps remove the excessive Ibuprofen and Acetylsalicylic Acid. This is done by restraining their ionization. Overall, ethyl acetate containing 0.5% acetic acid was effective because the various analgesics in Anacin, Excedrin, Motrin, and No-Doz were all clearly separated and…

Naproxen sodium, a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug or NSAID, possesses analgesic, antipyretic and anti-inflammatory effects. Naproxen sodium was added to Jeff’s plan of care to treat his chronic back pain. NSAIDs are absorbed through the GI tract and decreases pain by reversibly blocking cyclooxygenase which inhibits the formation of prostaglandins. Naproxen sodium has an onset of 30 minutes and duration of approximately seven hours (Sutton, 1996). Jeff should be educated to avoid drinking alcohol and taking aspirin while on this medication as well as to avoid taking other meds such as ibuprofen or other meds similar to naproxen which could cause an overdose. Medications that Jeff is currently taking that could cause a drug interaction…

The medication typically recommended first are NSAIDs (though not aspirin) or skeletal muscle relaxants and these are enough for most people. Benefits with NSAIDs; however, is often small. High-quality reviews have found acetaminophen (paracetamol) to be no more effective than placebo at improving pain, quality of life, or function. NSAIDs are more effective for acute episodes than acetaminophen; however, they carry a greater risk of side effects including: kidney failure, stomach ulcers and possibly heart problems. Thus, NSAIDs are a second choice to acetaminophen, recommended only when the pain is not handled by the latter. NSAIDs are available in several different classes; there is no evidence to support the use of COX-2 inhibitors over any other class of NSAIDs with respect to benefits. With respect to safety naproxen may be best. Muscle relaxants may be…

Vicodin is prescription medication that is used to treat moderate to severe pain in adults. The two main ingredients in Vicodin are Hydrocodone bitartrate and acetaminophen. Hydrocodone is considered to be a pain reliever that acts similarly to codine and is effective at decreasing the pain as well as relieving cough, however its can also cause drowsiness, mood changes, and metal “clouding”. Because of this reason the it can only be used when combined with another drug and not alone, as far as in the United States. Therefore its combined with acetaminophen, which is also a pain reliever along with a fever reducer. The combination of these two drugs helps improve acetaminophen’s effectiveness at relieving pain as well as limiting the potential abuse of Hydrocodone. The maximum dose of Vicodin is usually controlled by the amount of acetaminophen that it contains.…
