Moment of Failure
There were many good prompts to choose from, some being “Describe an encounter that changed your life.” or, “Describe a moment of success.”, but I guess the prompt I can relate to the most is “Define a moment of failure”. For me this is the only topic that is easy to write about. I guess the moment of failure that I will choose to write about, is the moment I decided to not believe in myself. All I see around me is people with that light in their eyes that never ceases to fade. I see people with the dedication and self-confidence that I just wish I could possess. I see people with the courage to pursue their dreams, because they believe in themselves. I am sad to say, I didn’t have that. I think this moment of utter failure happened a few years ago, on a snowy day in February. I will never forget this day as long as I live. I was a freshman in high school. My father, brother, and sister and I had just seen a movie. We were driving home from the theatre, my dad driving and I was sitting directly behind him, in the white impala my sister now calls her car. My father had turned down the radio, and out of the blue asked, “Amanda, Anna…What do you want to do after high school?” My sister went first, describing her love for art. She went on to explain that is all she can see herself doing, before he responded it was my turn to answer. Of course, I knew the answer. “Music.” Music was my reply to the question. I wanted to be the one taking vocal lessons, and living my dream out as a singer.
I didn’t care if I was singing in coffee shops in the Big Apple, or if was singing at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. I knew in that moment if I was singing I would be happy. My thoughts weren’t money, my thoughts were music. I didn’t expect to be some famous singer like Katy Perry, or Justin Bieber. My dream was to sing, to just do the only thing I could actually see myself doing.
His reply, was the start of this failure, his response started the flame of

I had joined my church youth choir and loved every moment of it. Then, once middle school came I decided I wanted to continue my music education by joining the band playing the trombone. The next year I decided to try out for the middle school field hockey team and made it. I continued with band and field hockey until my freshman year of high school when I had the intentions of quitting field hockey in order to pursue marching band because no one had ever done both before. I soon came to my senses and decided that not only was I going to continue with both band and field hockey, but I was also going to be the first person to successfully do that. On top of this, I decided I would audition for the school musical and jazz ensemble which would also overlap with the end of the marching band and field hockey seasons. Through much communication with my coaches and band directors, and musical directors I was able to accomplish this for all four years of my high school career and I wouldn't have had it any other…

I recall being asked by my relatives: “What do you want to be when you grow up?” and instead of an answer I would give them a blank stare. I had no idea how to respond. Not because there was nothing I found appealing, but because I felt passionate about too many things. I loved music, math, design, helping others, working with kids, analyzing situations and solving problems. There were to many career paths that I liked, but it always seemed to me that in order to follow one I would have to give up the rest.…

I had always heard the same thing, “Graduate from a good college and find a decent living, and you’ll be happy and successful.” Hah! What a capitalistic, factory-produced, mind-n(d)umbing fairy tale to tell impressionable children, I thought. Nope, I was smarter than that. I would be the one to take the road less traveled—to go against the grain and live my own life the way I wanted to. After barely graduating high school with a GED (or a GED equivalent actually…), I took off to LA to become a music-producer. I was going to be big. I learned the trade, worked inside multi-million dollar studios, and formed a band. I had it all figured out and I was going to show everybody that school was for fools. As with everything in life, this intoxicating success did not last. I began to feel something was missing. Here I was, living the dream that I had imagined for myself, and yet, I didn't feel much fulfillment.…

Fortunately, by the fifth grade my parents were able to rent an apartment nearby our school and had found jobs in multiple Brownsville restaurants. After the move, things became much easier and we were able to have a much simpler life, though we were never able to forget the hardships we experienced and the effort we put into enhancing our lives. Today, I am sure my successes as of now are gratifying my parents as I am in the top 10% of my class, the Co-Captain of the Golden Stars Dance Team, member of the National Honor Society, Piano Club, HOSA, and in TRIO UTRGV talent search program. I attend rigorous AP classes to improve my opportunity to attend a university and have the finest future I can give myself. Although my triumphs may not look like much to most, I can assertively say that the trial of going through difficulty to have a superior future has been overcome with the comfort of focus, strength, and the right set of mind to build a better tomorrow for my family and…

Therefore, when I was 8 years old my life changed drastically. I started to study music in the school of arts of the province of Villa Clara. My specialty was piano, a very difficult instrument that requires several hours of study and dedication. During nine years of my life I thought I was going to be a musician, but when I turned 17, I started to think how my future would look like. All of the hours I had to spend daily sited in front of that piano, playing several musical works of different styles, was not what I wanted to do for the rest of my life.…

During my childhood my teachers would always ask me “What do you want to be when you grow up?” Without giving it much thought I would always say a teacher or a chef. As I got older I realized what I really wanted to be when I grew up. I became interested in becoming a nurse when I was around 12. My aunt, who is a nurse would always tell me stories about her patients and what was going on at the hospital she worked at. During my sophomore year I was privileged enough to job shadow my aunt’s friend Jana. It was a great, rewarding experience.…

The Arts have called my name for as long as I can remember. As a child, I dabbled in any intensively creative and performative thing that was in the immediate vicinity. I would go around telling all my peers that when I grew up, I was going to have any one of a number of extravagant careers: I would promise to become a famous actress on Monday, declare myself a world-class musician on Wednesday and swear to grow to be a best-selling novelist by Friday. The Arts, and all they encompassed, were my first love. It only seemed natural to me, like eating or blinking, that my life should be dedicated to the very thing that made me the happiest. I finally took my ambitions to heart my first year of high school, where I eagerly sought out beginning…

A time when I experienced extreme failure was when I was in my sophomore year of high school. When I started the year, I had the mindset of, “This is going to be easy. I’m not going to sweat it.” Reason being, in my freshman year, I passed all my classes easily and I thought the next school year would be the same. I was in for a rude awakening by then. It was my first year starting an AP class and I heard stories that it was going to be easy if one paid attention in class. As the first semester went, it was a struggle already. I had easily underestimated the workload and found myself barely passing with a C. I have the type of personality where I put a lot of pressure on myself and stress out easily; as one can imagine, I was very hard on myself.…
