On the subject of heroism, Maya Angelou once wrote that “I think a hero is any person really intent on making this a better place for all people” (Angelou). The general picture that comes to mind when the word “hero” is said is the idea of Superman or Wonder Woman; however, a true hero is anyone who tries to make their world a better place. Odysseus, the hero in Homer’s epic poem The Odyssey, fought in the Trojan War and embarked on a ten year journey to return to his kingdom, Ithaca. During his quest to return home, he encounters many supernatural forces that show both his heroic, and not so heroic actions. He faces countless challenges, meets new people, and has to make sacrifices for the overall benefit of his crew (Bowler and Homer 645-705).…
A hero encompasses many qualities, not just bravery or strength, but more importantly, the ability to inspire others. When Ponyboy finally went home a lot happened and he left again. He met up with Johnny again and they went on a walk to the park. That’s where everything went wrong. The Socs are known for jumping the greasers and the ended up circling the park. They stopped the car and got out, a fight broke out. “I felt the blood draining from my face,” said Ponyboy (S.E.Hinton page 48). The fight didn’t end the way that anyone thought it would. Ponyboy looked at Johnny and Johnny was out of it, but Ponyboy didn’t know why. The fight continued, but not for very long. “Bob, the handsome Soc, was lying there in the moonlight, doubled up and still. A dark pool was growing from him, spreading slowly over the blue white cement, “ (S.E.Hinton page 49). Johnny had killed Bob, they didn’t want that to happened. They left that city and went a live in a church in the country with the help of a friend. They just tried to stay out of trouble, so the cops couldn’t find them. The impact Johnny made on Ponyboy affected the rest of the story. Don’t let your social status take over who you are on the inside.Ponyboy developed from a boy who didn’t really like being a greaser to a boy that did. He learned the importance of being himself. Heroism can only truly be defined subjectively. Every single one of us can discover courageous qualities within any individual: it all depends on which endeavors a person finds heroic. In my opinion, a hero is someone who displays bravery or self sacrifice in the face of misfortune. They are not afraid to intervene and rectify what they see is wrong, despite the situation. Challenges may be confronted along the way, but a hero will arrive stronger than before. They will finish by attempting to or fully producing a positive impact on society. My personal role model is Elizabeth Cady Stanton, a leader of the women’s rights movement during the 19th century. She is someone who manifested all of these heroic traits by combatting the sexist ideas people had during this era. Throughout the course of her life, she shattered the expectations…
Heroes are seen in all kinds of stories and they are universal characters. They possess qualities that are above the ordinary. They also have a tragic flaw that usually ends up leading to their down fall in the story. They do, however end up learning from their experience and grow through it. The novel Their Eyes Were Watching God has a character that could be described as a hero. The main character, Janie, is a hero because she has extraordinary physical qualities as well as virtues, she has character flaws that lead to her downfall, and she manages to make her fall have some value.…
The stereotypical hero is brave, strong, nearly flawless, a lifesaver, and usually at least semi-intelligent. This archetype simply does not often appear in real life, unlike my definition of a hero – someone who tries to be the best person they possibly can be. I believe heroism is defined or reached by being gutsy, devoted, and benevolent, never being unfair, cruel or inhumane, and standing up for what you believe in.…
The definition of hero varies among people but, in my definition of a Hero is a person who is able to achieve the difficult task regardless of the resistance of society or sacrificing themselves in risky situations. A hero is not a person who is easily scared, gives up easily and selfish. In my opinion, when people are described as “hero” we neglect their bad behaviors, but this doesn’t imply to every hero we should be aware of such things because we all have our own flaws.…
