John Smith and William Bradford
Captain Jahn Smith and Governor William Bradford were two influental leaders in the New World during the early 1600s. They both established a colony and they attempted to attract settlers with writings. Their writings were intended for different audiences and they both had different purposes. John Smith’s writings were intended to bring people to the new world. He wrote a pamphlet to the people in England and told about all the good things about New England. In his pamphlet he tried to persuade people to join him in the new land and how he promised the New England was better than England. John Smith's audience was intended for people from England, and possible settlers.Though,William Bradford's writings were intended for different audiences and he had a different purpose than John Smith. William Bradford's audience was intended for the future generation. He wrote a diary about his actual experiences in Colonial America,he discussed in his diary about the many hardships he faced. Both wrote of their experiences in America,were Europeans,and desired to settle the land. John Smith and William Bradford were two important people who led to the settlement in America. They were fine leaders who made survival possible on this new land. They created relationships with the natives and won and lost some with their own men. They led their men across the ocean to settle on lands that were never previously settled by Europeans. They had all of their crew adapt to the new land and form relationships with the natives.If it was not for these two men's great leadership skills, their crews would have died and America would not be the same.Without the decisions made by Smith and Bradford, nobody would have survived in the New World. They took control and found food and shelter. They also made sure all their sick were taken care of when nobody really wanted to do this job.     Have you ever wondered about the beginning of America and if one thing was different, it could’ve changed the course of history? This question applies to a very important man in Jamestown who goes by the name of John Smith. On his trip to America, he complained about his ship’s leader which resulted in him being locked up (January 10). If it weren’t for a piece of paper from Europe, Smith might’ve been locked in the ship forever. Fortunately the paper contained a list of seven people in charge of Jamestown and his name was on it (15). He was then put in charge of construction (16). Jamestown was nearly dying of starvation due to the lack of knowledge on harvesting. With winter approaching rapidly, Jamestown would be in worse condition than it already was. Bravely, John Smith made a daring and bold attempt to trade with the Native Americans. It was a success! Jamestown was saved!     The political importance of the map can be seen immediately by the name given to the English colony. “Smith coined the name New England.”1 This represents the British policy of imperial expansion. The name indicates that the territory belonged to the British. The choice of name by Smith would please the English monarch as well as make it clear to opposing nations that the territory was controlled. Although Smith named the colony, Prince Charles named many of the important territories. This indicates that power was ultimately held with the throne.     An interesting characteristic of the colonies that the English founded during the 17th and 18th centuries on the eastern coast of modern day America is that while all were indeed settled by people from England they each developed their own very distinct cultures and ways of life. While the varying environments from each colony to the next certainly isn’t a negligible factor in the diversification of the colonists’ cultures in the New World, there are more striking factors that can be considered. The colonists themselves it seems had very different viewpoints, goals and demeanor when several regions are compared. Examples of two regions that were both settled by the English that developed very different and arguably contrasting cultures are the New England and the Chesapeake colonies. It is apparent that the main goals and natures of the colonists in either region were dissimilar. In New England colonists were primarily Puritans and focused on religion, self-government, family values, and cooperation for the good of the community where in the Chesapeake colonists often relied on the royal government and were focused on acquiring great wealth and furthering their own individual achievement. These dissimilarities as well as other factors like the environment caused the two cultures to develop in very separate ways.…
