I Am Not Scared By Niccolo Ammaniti
In the summer of 1978’s Italy, Niccolo Ammaniti’s I am not scared explores the darkness of the childhood imagining and the cruelty of reality. However, comparing these two we know it is complicated to work out which one is worse as they both make the story dark and dense.

The reality in the story is created by the people who Michele love and respect, he has no control and no idea what is going to happen, that is one of the reasons why the reality is more horrible than the imagination made up by Michele himself.     His innate sense subconsciously prevails at times of need. The first signs of awakening morality are already evident at the beginning of the text, when he resists Skull’s second attempt to force Barbara to do another forfeit which consisted of showing her ‘slit’. Regardless of the consequences he takes responsibility because of his sense of morality. He intuitively volunteers to do it in her place because of the guilt he felt from the first forfeit. “There was something dirty, something..I don’t know.” Although Michele is righteous he allows his greed to provoke him into revealing Fillipo’s whereabouts to Salvatore in order to gain the jinxed plastic football team that he does not really like. This book is a gothic horror which is a new genre but using the traditional horror aspects, one of the first books in the categories is’ The castle of Otranto’ published in 1767.
