party and helped them gain the support of the German people. Propaganda gave the Nazis power over the minds of the people. The Nazi's used different forms of propaganda like banners and different forms of art to reach and influence as many people as possible.
The article “We are Voting for Hitler!” is from Der Angriff, it was published before the first round of the German presidential elections in 1932.
The source was written by Goebbels and commemorates Hitler as a leader. The article is dated 7 March 1932. It is a highly authoritative primary source that was seen by most Germans. Goebbels outlines the case for Adolf Hitler as to why he should be elected. In the article Hitler is presented as the great German, the Führer, the Prophet, the Fighter and as the Reich President. The source presents Hitler as a powerful leader who would have unified the German people. Goebbels job was to present Hitler in the most favorable light to the public. The central message of the article was to show people that Hitler was the one who could save Germany from all its troubles. The message is very consistent with what Hitler talked about in his 1932 campaign speech. In the speech he says, “For we are not fighting for seats in parliament or cabinet appointments; we are fighting on behalf of our fellow Germans whom we want to - whom we shall -reunite in an inseparable community with a common destiny.” He reiterates that the National Socialist German Workers’ Party will unify Germany and gives the people a political reality. A lot of the appeals made by Hitler were centered on German
pride.
In the “Advice for a Dictator” article from Der Angriff, Goebbels writes about how he approves dictatorship. He writes it in a way that makes the National Socialist German Workers’ Party and Hitler appear to be the perfect representatives for the job. The article is dated 1 September 1932. The primary source is authoritative because it was published in a newspaper for all Germans to see. The form of propaganda appeals to the ruined middle-class. The article has twenty points in total. The central message of the source was that for Germany to become powerful, it needed to become a dictatorship that required only one leader. Each point in the article is directly consistent with the speech made by Hitler. Specifically point six, “Dictatorships will rescue a nation when they know better ways than the previous governmental forms that they are fighting, and when their power is so anchored in the people that they do not depend on weapons, but rather on their followers.” This article’s headline itself is consistent with Hitler’s speech as he wants a majority rule and wants to destroy all the other political parties. “After thirteen years, after they have destroyed everything in Germany, the time has finally arrived for their own elimination.” Point twelve of the article helps clarify that Goebbels writings are about Hitler. Hitler spoke freely and with courage, addressing issues and saying what he wanted for the nation. Hitler discussed the use of propaganda in his book Mein Kampf. His main reason for the use of propaganda was to control the German populace. The Mass media used conveyed simple propaganda messages that all of the masses could understand straightforwardly, belittling Germany’s enemies and raising devotion to Hitler.
All of the work and advice given by Goebbels from the two sources are consistent with Hitler’s views and speech given in the 1932 campaign. Hitler’s use of propaganda was extremely effective. The German people followed him like sheep. In addition to the propaganda skills used by Goebbels, Hitler was also a great speaker. In the video of the speech he promotes himself by suggesting he has great concern about the life and happiness of every German. At the same time he is able to blame the state of the country on his enemies’. Hitler made the nation feel that they could be strong again. He gave them a sense of pride and false hope. The two primary sources are typical examples of propaganda used by Hitler.
