Compare how the theme of childhood is presented in the poems Half Past Two and Hide and Seek.
The theme childhood is presented in both the poems but it’s presented differently, it’s presented more like a fantasy story in Half Past Two while in Hide and Seek it’s presented more realistically. Vernon Scanell tells in details about one game of Hide and Seek when he was a kid so perhaps he addresses himself as the little kid while U.A.Fanthorpe was a teacher so she perhaps would’ve written about something she had witnessed.
Half-past Two by U.A. Fanthorpe is a poem about an innocent young boy; it has very cliché fantasy like characters: an innocent hero and a powerful and wicked villain, the poem also begins with a cliché of fairytales, “Once upon.” Capital letters are used by the writer to emphasize on the dominance of the teacher. She is portrayed as a villain, the writer says, “Being cross, she’d forgotten She hadn’t taught him Time.” She is depicted as a short tempered, dominant and a wicked woman while the child is portrayed as a weak, innocent and confused boy, he has no clue about how to read the clock, “He knew the clockface, the little eyes and two long legs for walking, but he couldn’t click its language.” The personification shows his confusion as well as in Half-past Two, the readers feel sympathetic towards the young boy and it makes you realize the innocence of childhood. Time is personified in the end as well, “He escaped into the clockless land” and it also ends with cliché phrase: “for ever”
While Hide and Seek by Vernon Scannell starts by him perhaps telling the story in the present looking back at the past. The poem starts with a positive thought, talks about the seaside, Vernon Scannell uses the word “You” which is ambiguous and it could perhaps mean that he is addressing himself as a kid or he is addressing the readers.     Gwen Harwood, An Australian poet who, seems to develop an imaginative, rich form of poetry through the use of recurring themes, complex language techniques and even further through the use of sophisticated structures only seen in the most prestigious of poems in the modern era. Gwen Harwood has a tendency to write poetry that is significant in all eras, cultures and/or societies of the world as she captures, and develops them into a strong universal theme that recurs strongly. These themes seem to endure, and portray the human experience by relating these in forms that resonate through a range of various environments; these poems have an immense structural integrity. These themes are depicted powerfully in poems such as; Father and Child, Violets the 2 poems that I have chosen to discuss in this speech. In the Father and child, it has a unique structure of 2 parts; the 1st (Barn Owl) discusses her loss of innocence in the daughter’s perspective in the past, the second part (Nightfall) Being the downfall to her father, how he is put in an degenerative state, slowly falling to his demise. This is to do with Gwen accepting the inevitability of her father’s death. These 2 poems can be read symbiotically in a dual nature to provide further insight into both their poems, or separately as a poem. The language in the first poem is quite unique. It highlights the use of very simple words, with little complexity, this can be interpreted to show the innocence that the child still possesses, as children (better yet an innocent child) are meant to speak with less complexity than a full grown adult. These sentences also tend to be monosyllabic. ‘I knew my prize, who swooped home at this hour’ are all monosyllabic. As the poem continues, especially after the owl is shot, the child’s vocabulary seems to improve in complexity, losing its monosyllabic nature.     A short story and poem, no matter how structurally different, are two literary pieces where a rich story is embedded. Readers are drawn towards these scripts by means of rhythm (poem), characterization, or a fictional setting in their respective narratives. However, the mere script would not make it entertaining enough to hold the reader’s attention. It would depend on the imagination of the readers as they are reading the story as to what they take from it. Every reader has their own way of visualizing the descriptions and symbolism used by the author. It is through imagination that the readers are able to interpret what the author is trying to depict within the symbolism and other descriptive languages. The beauty of stories and poems is that they are generated and created through the readers own imagination which consequently allows each individual reader to build their own personal connection with the literary piece. The two literary pieces “The Road Not Taken” (poem) and the short story “A Worn Path” are different in terms of actual writing styles, however they both share the same theme which is every person’s journey is greatly governed by their decisions and no matter how many paths there may be, it is still the choices that the person makes that determine the ending of his or her journey.     Both Dove’s and Wilbur’s poems are written from the perspective of an older writer looking back at youth.
